Another Sleepless Night Reading This Book By Kindle Customer Ian and Lance are just your typical 13 year old wise-cracking Boy Scout buddies, chasing merit badges and, no doubt, driving their possibly over indulgent parents just a little crazy. Not exactly steely-eyed survivalist-types, but there are hints early on when they get their next martial arts belts, and then start talking guns. They are good kids, though, and their juvenile banter is strangely endearing as the world begins to fall apart around them. This story gets off to a fast start and the middle portion of the story is breakneck fast and dangerous. I loved the little girls in the mix and their silly "Frozen" snowman song, as well as the reaction by the boys, who surely know the song by heart. Just a touch of Bruce and Mike as tiny teenagers. I hope the sequel is already written. All in all, a great start to a new story by the talented Thomas A Watson. Read it.

By Sherry Clifton I have to say that I read all the reviews for this book and was worried but bought it because I didn't have anything to read. I am so glad that I did! This book sucked me in and didn't let me go until I read the last page. When I was supposed to be working, what was I doing? Reading this book. Making dinner? I was holding my kindle in one hand and stirring supper with the other. The story pulled me in from the first paragraph. The characters are so rich and real that you feel that you are standing behind them watching everything take place.I'm going to have a hard time waiting for the next book in this series. Please, please don't keep us waiting too long.I won't go into detail here because anything I say will take away from the story.Buy it. Read it. Judge for yourself.

By Dowsehouse this is a fun and scary read. the author is wonderful and I love all of his books. this is from the viewpoint of two thirteen year old boys at the start of the end of everything that they know. I loved the story and even thou it is scary and intense it has moments of humor that I loved. I highly recommend this book and this author. Once you try it you will want to read all the books written by this author.,

Published for the international Carl Barks Fan Club, this book includes images and articles regarding the amazing worldwide influence of Carl's stories and artwork on literature, the arts, education and literacy. For seven decades the work of Carl Barks has been translated into every major language, published by the millions, and enjoyed by billions of adults and children of all cultures. The characters he created have become household names, his stories treasured works of literature. Yet it was not until his retirement in the 1960s that Carl's name was made known to the public, for during the twenty-three years of his career, his work was presented to the public as that of Walt Disney—specifically, that of The Walt Disney Company. Carl Barks was "The Good Artist" who created Uncle Scrooge and wrote and drew adventure stories of Donald Duck and a menagerie of other Disney characters. He had the distinction of being the least known while at the same time the most popular storyteller in history. Some authorities have reported that comic books with Carl's stories averaged 23 million copies world wide, EACH MONTH throughout his twenty-three year career. If these figures are accurate, 23 million per month times 12 months times 23 years amounts to six billion copies sold, making Carl the most popular author in his lifetime and probably for all time to come. (And his body of work has continued to be republished globally in even greater volume during the half century since his retirement.) The revenue initially generated by Carl's tales would have amounted to gross sales of over $600 million, an average of more than $26 million yearly, and this was a half century ago when a dime had meaning. Carl himself received little in the way of compensation for helping to make the Disney name a worldwide entertainment empire, as his name was kept secret by the comic book publishers, and nearly all of his original art incinerated. Upon his retirement from twenty-three years of writing and drawing Disney Duck stories, Carl spent his next four decades creating brilliant oil paintings of scenes from the stories he'd written. Today those several hundred paintings are purchased by collectors at enormous six-figure prices. An American of humble beginnings from rural Oregon, Carl Barks became the single most prolific, most published, most read author in history. The Pictorial volumes of the nonprofit Carl Barks Fan Club explore all aspects of his work and its ongoing worldwide impact.

The Barks Fan's Potpourri: A Medley of Articles from The Carl Barks Fan Club Newsletter, by Joseph Robert Cowles

About the Author Joseph Robert Cowles and Carl Barks became friends back in the 1960s, about the time Joseph was entering his career in marketing and publishing, and Carl was preparing to retire from comic book cartooning to take up oil painting. Joseph produces The Carl Barks Fan Club Pictorial series of images and articles about Carl Barks, and among other books has published the dissertation Recalling Carl, his quest to inspire the production of major motion pictures based on Carl's work, which Joseph contends has the power to become the most valuable motion picture entertainment franchise of all time.

(Including back blurb page, this is around 256 pages total.)For those looking for reading material for background, however, this will be an ideal purchase. Non-standard backgrounds are discussed, such as an Elf falling in with humans becoming forlorn and potentially socially dysfunctional due to the generations of death the elf experiences around him.Common Races, predictably, get the most space, at around 8 pages each. Human cultures (Taldans, Varisians, etc) each get roughly 4 pages. Uncommon Races get roughly 6 pages, and Rare Races get roughly 2 pages. For system-bits, there are Traits, Feats, Alt Racial Traits, Spells, Armor, Weapons, and Wondrous Items. All are racially based. Feats are Teamwork heavy. Races are listed for Spells, but there is nothing describing an exclusive ability to learn them by Race.I almost forgot the specific (updated) chart for Reincarnation on Golarion. There is a chance you could come back as a Ifrit, Skinwalker, or Wyvaran.

By Dagnaus The book itself is fine for those who do not already own previous hardback books under the "Campaign Setting" line. A lot of the information is the same if not copy and pasted, though, there are nice little blurbs within the blue boxes that might help a player or GM make their characters feel more integrated within the settings lore. Such as common stereotypes that others will commonly mistake you for, or you might just fit into that stereotype and make the different varying cultures even more stern in their stereotyped imaginings of your races culture. I found that this book makes a decent gift to a friend who is interested in the setting and wants to further immerse themselves more into Golarion along with making their character a little-bit more grounded to it rather than vaguely following a rough idea they've conjured up from hearsay. My biggest nitpick with this book is how it missed a golden opportunity to really delve deep into the workings of the more uncommon races. Often times I found my own head-cannon serving me much better than what was presented. Races like hobgoblins should never be considered 'uncommon' when they naturally breed more quickly than humans, are as dexterous as elves and as hardy as dwarves with none of the penalties from neither elves or dwarves. Perhaps I am just being nit picky here, but I cannot help but feel inconsistencies like these really deters the believability of Golarion as a setting. All in all I thought the book was okay, certainly a good gift for a friend who is looking to improve his A-game as a player and a character within Paizo's Golarion.

Solid for those looking for lore, lacking for those searching for new mechanics By Chalgyr's Game Room It has been a while since we took a look at some tabletop games, but with the recent release of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races, this seemed as good of a time as any to cover this latest campaign setting.Depending on what you look for from a setting guide, the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races is going to be either very hit or very miss. It is hard for me to envision much of a middle ground with this one. For those looking for a lot of system mechanics, this release is rather light, ringing in around fifty pages of content. These focus on mechanics such as traits, spells, items and since all of them have racial roots to them, they fit in quite well here. Of course, you do not have to limit these by race, but they were created with these flavors in mind. There is a clear four chapter structure at play here, with the first focusing on the more commonly known races. While dwarves might not come to mind immediately in a book about sea races, it is work keeping in mind that this tome is trying to create a sense of structure and interaction - not just a bestiary of sorts. The next chapter gets into less common races such as the draw - ones that show up in a good number of guide books, but are not considered part of the primary rotation of races that get used. The third chapter really starts to get into the more unique races, and here is where I had the most fun frankly. Now these first three chapters are the kind of material I really enjoy from a campaign setting. I can easily enough come up with ideas for my players to do things most of the time, but I enjoy some lore and detail that helps to flesh out characters and the world they inhabit. The first three quarters of this book is heavily focused on on lore, and examples of how some races might blend with others. This just made for really solid reading and made for a good experience from my standpoint.People such as myself, who enjoy copious amounts of lore and flavor will get the most out of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races. The fourth and final chapter revolves around the aforementioned crunch - the game mechanics themselves. On a purely technical level, this is not the strongest of outings for the Paizo books in this regard. While some feats are absolutely cool, other aspects of the mechanics tends to revolve around smaller, less interesting items such as when a particular character might be getting some positive or negative modifiers. They do lend some variety to the combat and skill usage within the campaign, but these types of modifications tend to be a little dry.As for the book itself, but now you should know what to expect from most of Paizo's offerings if you are a longtime Pathfinder fan. The artwork ranges from pretty good to excellent, with quality paper stock and a hard cover that keeps everything in place nicely. The pages are bound perfectly, with no defects in the book even after reading through it from one cover to another (yeah, I'm one of those types when it comes to campaign settings). If you enjoy getting some lore and background on races, the Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Races is a really solid option for you. I do wish there had been a little more space devoted to the more unique races than the common ones we already know a great deal about, but that time with the uncommon and rare varieties is incredibly well spent. The mechanical portion of the book is a little weaker, with some solid magical items and logical modifiers, but feats are hit and miss and those who come into this looking for a lot of really solid new mechanics to work with will probably come away somewhat disappointed. All in all, a really good offering for me personally - as I fall into the former category more than the latter.

The Widows' Adventures: A Novel, by Charles Dickinson

From Publishers Weekly "Two o'clock in the morning, the eleventh day of September, a Monday. For the occasion, Helene wore new sunglasses with water-blue lenses and lemon frames. She sucked on a chip of ice. They were traveling toward California at 12 miles per hour." Dickinson's ( Crows ) new novel tells the story of recently widowed elderly sisters Ina and Helene, who resolve to leave their suburban Chicago neighborhood behind, master their fear of loneliness and drive to Los Angeles. Because only Helene knows how to drive, and she is blind, the stages of their roadside odyssey are negotiated late at night at low speeds on rural byways. For a month or two, the women live out a parable of lives linked in mutual dependence, confronting the problems of aging and death as they go. Asking us to think more than feel, Dickinson offers a tightly constructed, highly deliberate narrative; in sketching character, he prefers to suggest by omission rather than throw aside the veil and penetrate motivation directly. The strategy will intrigue some readers and frustrate others, but his accumulated insights, and the rhythm at which he reveals them, will linger and leave a lasting impression. Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Helene is blind and diabetic; Ina likes to drink beer. Catalyzed by sudden acts of violence in their neighborhoods andfueled by their desire to free themselves, the two widowed sisters set off on a road trip to California, where Ina's grown children live. The women, of course, learn much about their families, themselves, and their worlds as they travel. Surprisingly, Dickinson's slightly stilted narrative beginning grows increasingly more human, and in turn more gripping, as the pair drives further west. The characterization develops fully just soon enough to hook the reader, who may find this novel a refreshing change, as it examines the physical, emotional, and spiritual lives of two endearing but not perfect older women.- Jean Keleher, Wally Findlay Galleries Lib., ChicagoCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “The Widows’ Adventures is full of wit . . . Dickinson displays all the marks of a great writer.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)“That most wonderful and increasingly rare sort of novel written by an author who loves his characters beyond measure.” (Barbara Kingsolver)“Amusing and touching . . . in the best sense of the word, an entertainment.” (Washington Post)“Quirky freshness . . . an original novel . . . a writer of uncommon interest.” (New York Times)“Dickinson works magic in this painful, hilarious adventure. . . . His characters glow with passions, bright blue and dangerous, that jump back and forth between them like arcing electricity. . . . He makes their journey not only captivating, but entirely plausible.” (Los Angeles Times)“Dickinson offers a tightly constructed, highly deliberate narrative. . . . His accumulated insights, and the rhythm at which he reveals them, will linger and leave a lasting impression.” (Publishers Weekly)“The characterization develops fully just soon enough to hook the reader, who may find this novel a refreshing change, as it examines the physical, emotional, and spiritual lives of two endearing but not perfect older women.” (Library Journal)“Marvelous characters.” (Chicago Tribune)

The two not-so-old ladies remind you of every tough-minded and slightly dotty old aunt you ever had. Aches with life and laughter and sadness and hope shaded with the knowledge that this life is all too temporary, and we better find out who we love and love them, soon.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Driving Blind By Nanci The cover on the first printing of this book caught my attention. You see, my Aunt went blind and used to have my Dad (who never learned to drive) tell her when cars or a stopsign were approaching. I was not disappointed. This book is marvelous. Dickinson is a fabulous writer, and develops his characters so that you are certain you know them. His writing reminds me of Anne Tyler (trade Baltimore for Chicago). One of the ways the elderly lose their rights is the loss of the driver's license. Also the sisters' sparring is just like my Mom & Aunts ... loving daggers. You will love this book.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. They are old but so full of life. By A Customer Brilliantly witty dialogue between two elderly sisters as Dickinson's weaves their shared past with the slow motion present of old age. They snap at each other like only sisters can. The blue collar Chicago neighborhood where the sisters have grown up and raised their own families is decaying rapidly. Yet all their life experiences have occurred within these few blocks so they stay despite the urging of their adult children. Dickinson gives us an exquisite sense of the sisters' interior lives as small daily experiences trigger memories of their husbands, their small triumphs and their fights. Will they fade quietly into the sunset? Not without giving us an amazing ride. You will be cheering for them until the end of the book. You will be laughing along the way.

I have also found issues that were also wrong in the code from their website. I was able to figure out the solution, but I'm severely disappointed in how much time it takes to clear obstacles due to poor technical editing. Otherwise the content seems very useful.
