Marywan Rashaba, Mary, is a young Kurd growing up in Iraq under the regime of Saddam Hussein. As his great escape becomes convoluted, Mary is drawn deeper and deeper into a dark, rollercoaster ride of drama, intrigue, savagery, love, betrayal and heroism which makes the movies he adores seem almost trivial by comparison.

I laughed, I wept, I shuddered with horror, I loved. I found "Letters From a Kurd" to be enlightening and inspiring. Although it is set in the 1980s, it is very relevant to today. Biji Kurdistan!

Confused by an indistinctiveness in his gender in a country and time with a very repressed sexual politics, young Marywan struggles to find his way through a society in conflict with his personal identity, Kurdish identity as it relates to Greater Kurdistan, and Kurdish identity as an oppressed Iraqi minority. Through escapism in his enjoyment of foreign films, notably those of Clint Eastwood, he tries to find some semblance of life and love. War is ongoing between Iran and Iraq, and regime paranoia strikes repeatedly and tragically as Marywan grows up.This is an incredibly difficult and affecting book that will help you understand much about modern day Iraq and its troubles from the perspective of a normal human who becomes drawn into a pervasive conflict. It's a work of fiction that illuminates the many real horrors faced by a brave and resolute people over the years. This is the type of people's history that must be read and understood to have a meaningful perspective when talking or thinking critically about politics and how they affect humanity.

Set in the 1980's during Saddam Hussein's rule, Marywan, a young boy/girl reveals the horrors of the Kurdish people living in their now displaced country. Marywan lives for the cinema and wants to become a film director. His love and letters to 'Gringo', his favourite actor and confidant are his hope of escape and leaving to live in America. Each chapter of this story leaves you holding your breath in anticipation as we learn the story of Marywan's every day live, surviving the atrocities inflicted on him as well his family, friends and neighbours under Iraqi rule. This powerful book is written from the heart and absorbs you completely. It delights and shocks you with the reality of what is the truth of life for many thousands of Kurdistan people. Congratulations Kae Bahar!
