Some people have it easy. India is not one of those people. Born in 50s Greenwich Village and lost from a young age, she courageously immerses herself in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Here, she digs on many things: sex, acid, lesbians, Woodstock and the vapidity of L.A. But she can't quite dig herself. What she really wants is to marry Arnie, who proposed when they were twelve. Hilarity ensues as India immerses herself in various therapies, careers and men-while trying to get herself in emotional shape for Arnie. But then he gets married. Bereft, so does she. Here are snatches of India's trials, ups and downs, loves and losses. Perhaps one day she will find her most important love.

Not for the prudish By migwar Wendy Vega's "Snatches" is exactly that - snatches of a life lived somewhat on the wild side by a child of the 1950s and '60s in a somewhat wild place (Greenwich Village) where we "bridge and tunnel people" liked to spend time, but where I never got to actually live. My best guess is that this mini-saga is a combination of real life vignettes from the author's life, combined with wild fantasies from the author's imagination. Speaking as someone who "knew her when," but not very well or for very long, I was fascinated by this book and hoped that it would fill me in on the long gap between our teenage friendship and our recent renewal of contact. It makes for quick, light reading - great for the beach or poolside - but I'm not sure that it has given me any great insight regarding the author's true character (or the true facts of her past.) She has retained her essential mystery, while seemingly revealing all. That, of course, is quite the literary feat.

Stirring narrative By Elliot Essman India is a character who seems to alternately glide and jostle through her environment, from the swinging sixties through to the antiseptic hyper-materialist eighties. Fulfillment in life seems ever to lie around the corner in the guise of this drug or that man. She lives and loves to the best of her ability, which, we discover by the time the book is complete, is considerable. India’s over-the-edge story could be exhausting or even trite in the wrong hands, but here it is explicated with sensitivity and skill by an expert wordsmith.

In Vega's book you can smell the pizza walking down the Village streets and your eyes will burn from the smoke in her evenings. Its nice to have a snatch of fun to read and just go along for the ride. Hope the author plans to fill us in on her 25 years with her ultimate Prince. Well done!
