Svetlana (Sveta) Grobman grew up in a communal apartment in Moscow, Russia, during the Cold War with her mother, father and younger sister. From a very young age, she found herself living in two contradictory worlds: the private world of a Jewish family struggling to live a decent life in a society rife with shortages and anti-Semitism; and the public world of an oppressive totalitarian regime that brainwashed its citizen into believing that the Soviet Union was the best country in the world. From the Author Dear Friends, My dream of publishing my first book -- my memoir -- has come true! This book covers the first fifteen years of my life, but I spent five years writing it. Why so long? For one thing, I had to learn to write in English, for I came to this country knowing only Russian (and a little GermanJ). For another, my childhood was not happy. In fact, some of the things that happened to me then haunt me even now, and it hasn't been easy to relive them. Yet that's all in the past. My book, The Education of a Traitor, is out. About the Author Svetlana Grobman is a Jewish immigrant from Russia who was born in Moscow in 1951. She moved to the United States in 1990. While living in Russia, Svetlana was an engineer and an editor for the Soviet Encyclopedia. Now, she is a librarian and freelance writer living in Columbia, Missouri. Svetlana has published articles and personal stories in a variety of places, including the Christian Science Monitor, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Rural Missouri, Library Journal, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. The Education of a Traitor is Svetlana’s first book, and she is currently working on her second.

An outstanding memoir By Clara First, let me just say that I could not put the book down - and it's not just a figure of speech, I really was coming back to it every free moment I had. From the start, I was swept away by the story told by this precocious youngster. The matter-of-fact tone, coupled with sober naivete and with a good measure of self-deprecating sense of humor took me by surprise, a subdued and serious "wow" kind of surprise. I could relate to a lot of it (growing up at that same time in the Soviet Union), yet some of it was an alarming and disconcerting news to me - which just shows how much some of us didn't know about the treatment of Jews in those days. I felt overwhelmed by the fact how well the author remembers her childhood, with all its milestones, with its understandable rebellion against her parents - trying to fathom the harsh realities of Soviet life as it related to her Jewish heritage, trying to delve into the forbidden history by questioning her grandparents; how her eyes slowly open and she perceives the seemingly unperceivable.Even before I opened the book, its title jumped at me: the word "traitor" is so infused with potent meaning - we were all traitors if we decided to leave Soviet Union, for it was drilled into us that we were given free education and thus had to "repay" the country by never leaving... But in the author's case this word takes on a much more explicit significance. Many of the episodes in the book were so poignant that it made my heart ache. But one of the most delightful was the experience at the Concert Hall - loved it. The description of the Soviet hospital - another very true-to-fact (yet far from delightful) example. Ms. Grobman seems to have a knack for cleverly pinpointing the essence of things. A moving memoir. Loved it.

An exceptionally well rounded childhood memoir By Former Hawkeye Svetlana Grobman's Education of a Traitor is an exceptionally well-rounded childhood memoir. Her account of her family's dynamics is both loving and realistic. She does not romanticize the inevitable conflicts between herself, her parents, and her sister. Life under the Soviet system exacerbated family problems, especially for a Jewish family. On this point--among numerous others--a little girl's memories gave me a real education. For example, "Sveta" shows us how a child's educational or social failure could prevent him or her from joining the right communist youth groups, which could have long-term consequences.I especially appreciated the way in which Grobman brought world events into the story of her family. For example, she shows the way in which the Soviet Union's Sputnik success affected life in schools and the most mundane of workplaces. And I had never realized that the Kremlin had hushed up the Cuban Missile Crisis so successfully.If Ms. Grobman should write another volume of memoirs, and I hope she will, I'll look forward to reading more about how the increasing strains on the Soviet system were translated to the streets and to family life.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful book! By Suzanne Chiu This book amazed me! I'm so glad a friend shared it with me! As a former high school English teacher (in the U.S.), on reading it I immediately thought how I would like to see "Education of a Traitor" placed on required reading lists across the country! Actually, I think students all over the world would find it fascinating and feel a kinship with Svetlana Grobman, as I do. This memoir teaches us about something most of us have never thought about: namely, what was it like being a kid and coming of age in the former Soviet Union? What appeals to me the most about this memoir, though, is how the author, while sharing with us details of her life growing up in that particular time and place, also reminds us of our common experiences as children trying to make sense of the world around us--observing family members, teachers, and all the others that we encounter. Each chapter is a little gem revealing some aspect of the philosopher-child, ever observing not only those around her, but herself as well, and then our being privy to the conclusions she draws. There is so much to appreciate in this book. I highly recommend it!
