Two city dwellers share a familiar fantasy: to flee their frenzied routine and start a new life in some perfect foreign location, the vineyards of Italy. But when Tony and his wife, Mira, take the plunge and sink their life savings into a ruined farmhouse in Tuscany, they find they are dogged by every conceivable planning disaster, sclerotic bureaucracy, snakes in the grass and murky dealings with their medieval bank. All they want is to transform their 14th-century heap into holiday apartments fit for the 21st century. With no Italian and only a modest budget, their plans hinge on relentless optimism and finding some finance to support their business plan. But the 'good life' seems doomed to remain a dream. What they have is a parody, shivering through seven winters, living in the ruins with no heat, no hot water, and holes in the floor. The idea of making wine had never been a part of their plan, yet when debts of three-quarters of a million dollars, high corruption and sabotage put them on the verge of bankruptcy it appears they have no other choice. The directors of the crooked bank are finally led off in handcuffs - and the novices reluctantly decide to build a winery, falling further into debt. They pit themselves against professionals descended from generations of aristocratic families whose Chianti wine has been famous through the centuries. This true story of accidental winemakers facing seemingly insurmountable pitfalls and adversity is told with Tony's humorous style that brings to life the real Tuscany. He takes us behind the superficial tranquility of the countryside between Florence and Siena with its timeless beauty and into the nightmare of trying to run a business in Italy. He also introduces us to friendly neighbours who help them keep their sanity. We meet many of the characters who join them as guests in their vacation apartments and learn about winemaking, grapes, the harvest, olive picking and olive oil making. The story has a surprising end for a couple whose only previous agricultural experience had been cultivating geraniums in gritty London window-boxes. Their very first Chianti Classico vintage caused America's leading critic, Robert Parker, to award them 93 points out of 100 with the comment: 'A thrilling new discovery. Impressive!'

About the Author Tony was born in Manchester, England, the great-grandson of an Italian immigrant from Genoa whose own son (Tony's grandfather) was closely identified with Manchester United for over forty years. In 1902 he actually gave the football club its name. At the age of seventeen he began a long journalistic career by joining a local paper in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and has been writing for a living almost ever since. He left England when he was twenty to spend a year in Greece as associate editor of the English-language daily, Athens News. Returning to London, he worked for ten years at Daily Mail followed by another ten at The Sunday Times. His foreign assignments have taken him to some of the world's hotspots in Israel, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Colombia and Uganda and Cyprus. For a while he was based in the Daily Mail's New York bureau as a correspondent covering North America. In 1982 Tony and his wife, Mira, left London to live abroad. He spent several years freelancing from France and Italy before they began the Italian adventure recounted in CHIANTI ON THE ROCKS. His articles appeared in most British national newspapers as well as The New York Times, and Reader's Digest. For a while he was European Editor of Travel Holiday Magazine (USA).

By Odysseus II Are you still dreaming of buying a dilapidated farmhouse in Tuscany and converting it into a prize-winning, wine-producing estate that will quadruple in value? Or maybe you're more humble and are merely contemplating an earthy but chic ristorante or celebrity-attracting agriturismo B&B?Better not celebrate your move and good fortune with a bottle of Chianti before reading Tony Rocca's bittersweet and amusing memoir.Accompanied by his wife Mira, the Roccas experience with crusty Italian bankers, corrupt local politicians, pie-in-the-sky winemakers and a generally dysfunctional bureaucracy in a scandalous black economy reveal that many sour grapes accompany profitable vintages and an idyllic life in rural Italy. This lively book, and the glass of wine you sip while reading it in your armchair, may encourage you to think twice, save your money and maintain your sanity.

Books, glowing with unlikely tales about the food and the local people, have been written about it. I've read them and felt a big whiff of adman's insincerity in the prose. This book is different. It is how it really was - and, I suppose, still is. If you are following your Tuscan dream, you'd better read this first.I stayed at Tony and Mira's Tuscany dream appartments and had a wonderful holiday. The fireflies lit up the hillside and Tony's wine lit up my husband! As a holiday it was all that we wanted. What I didn't realise then was the sheer hard work that had gone into it and the difficulties in getting the project off the ground.A good read and an intelligent book.

An Inspiring Read By KevynDee You really won't read a better book on how one man's dream became a reality and a truimph over so many aversities along the way. Tony Rocca is an inspirational writer and this book had me gripped from the opening pages of the first chapter. Not even knowing this area of Italy is no boundary to the wonderful flow of writing which remains captivating throughout every subsequent chapter and what's more Tony Rocca takes you on such a colourful journey, he is probably doing a better PR job in highlighting the sheer beauty of the area than the local tourist board! This is a well written book on one man's vision and is certainly worth raising a glass or two of Chianti for!
