About the Author Born in February 1982 to Lori and Curt Jones in Denver, Colorado, Jessica Jewett showed an early talent for all things creative. Despite her rare disability, Arthrogryposis, Jessica taught herself to write with her mouth before she entered kindergarten. Her first poem was completed in 1988 at the age of six, and she began her first illustrated short story in 1990, followed by the start of her first novel in 1994. She has worked in journalism, freelance writing and constantly evolves as a novelist. Her artwork has been exhibited in a gallery showing throughout the Southeast. She has numerous hobbies in artistic, paranormal and historical fields, which are often the subject of her writing. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Lynette Erwin The first work of a young, promising author, "From the Darkness Risen" offers the reader insight into the family of a Confederate Captain from Virginia who is captured and taken to a Northern prison in Illinois. His wife, Isabelle, is left with their young son to tend their modest farm and volunteer as a nurse in a Confederate hospital. Soon after her husband is captured, Isabelle is driven from their farm to search for her husband through a series of terrifying and dramatic events.Jewett has a strong command of Civil War history and it is evident in her attention to the details--events, dialect, battle descriptions, weaponry, clothing, food, etc. The opening battle scene and subsequent skirmish in which Captin Cavanaugh is captured are beautifully descriptive and well-written. Her characters are interesting and compelling.As this was Jewett's first work, there is some room for growth in her craft as a writer. However, as she has written and published at least one other work since this one, there is little doubt in my mind that she has improved tremendously. If you're a Civil War buff, you'll be impressed with her knowledge of the times and events. That alone makes the book an interesting and impressive read.

It is set during the American Civil War and tells the story of the Cavanaughs. When Robert, a captain, is captured and taken to a Union prison, Isabelle does everything in her power to bring him back home to their son. Through the many twists and turns the story takes, I began to admire Isabelle for her strength during some truly horrific ordeals.The Civil War was a gruesome time in history and Jessica writes it exactly how I imagine it must have been. There is action, love, fright and happiness - something for everyone. And the attention to detail shows that a tremendous amount of research must have gone into the book. The descriptions of the places and people made me feel like I was there with them. I love it when a story does that for me.I've had the pleasure of reading this and her second novel and would recommend both of them.
