What happens between book 9 of the Young Wizards series, A Wizard of Mars, and the forthcoming book 10, Games Wizards Play? Diane Duane answers the question in this volume, collecting together the three canonical works that constitute a "transitional trilogy" between books 9 and 10 -- a 150,000-word extravaganza of untold tales to help keep you going until the tenth book comes out in February 2016. Interim Errantry contains: The novella Not On My Patch, the tale of an unusual Halloween in the Young Wizards' neighborhood, featuring overage Trick Or Treating, suburban zombies, and the Attack of the Killer Pumpkins. The novelette How Lovely Are Thy Branches, a holiday-themed Young Wizards story in which an alien wizard who looks a lot like a Christmas tree gets the gift he wants most -- decorations -- and a memorable party and sleepover party are disrupted by a superblizzard and an incursion of alien ghosts. And finally, the new original Young Wizards novel Lifeboats, the tale of a distant world threatened by unavoidable doom, an intervention that takes thousands of Earth's wizards, young and old, into harm's way, and a Valentine's Day that absolutely doesn't go as planned... So settle down with a pumpkin spice latte (or a hot cocoa, or even just some tea and saltines...) and get ready to enjoy the highlights of autumn 2010 and winter 2011 in the Young Wizards universe!

It's a fun holiday for the wizards, because it's one of the few occasions on which they can be relatively open with their magic--and this year, it's Tom and Carl's turn to host the "haunted house" that rotates among the local senior wizards. At the start of the story, Nita is reluctant to cut into the pumpkin that is supposed to be the Callahan family's jack o'lantern, but she finally does what any wizard would do: asks it. Jackie has an entirely different perspective on life and death than animal life, and is happy to be a jack o'lantern. Nita's wizard friends are a little amused when they realize she's named it, slightly concerned when she refers to Jackie as "he," and of course it's inevitable that Jackie will become a key factor in resisting a sneak attack by the Lone Power, who tries to make Halloween really scary again. This was a lot of fun.How Lovely Are Thy Branches is a novelette featuring the young wizards' old friend Filif, the tree-like alien wizard who was a houseguest of the Callahans in a previous adventure. Thanksgiving is coming, and Nita is having a very hard time with this first Thanksgiving without her mother. She wishes they could skip right to Christmas--and Kit's sister Carmella pulls Nita into planning a holiday party and sleepover for a few days before Christmas. The guest list will include their offworld wizard friends, including Filif--who has been excited about Christmas ever since he learned Earth people had a holiday involving bringing trees inside and decorating them. This one, unfortunately, is a nice enough story, but very slight.Lifeboats is a short novel, and the real meat of this collection. The planet of Teveral is about to become uninhabitable; its moon, Thesba, is starting to break up and will rain its fragments down on the planet. There's very little time to move the inhabitants and enough of their biosphere elsewhere to save them, and the job is complicated by the fact that not all the Teveralites are willing to go. It's a huge undertaking, and Nita, Kit, and Ronan are among the wizards drafted to help manage the worldgates that will transfer those willing to evacuate to their new homes. Nita and Kit are assigned to different areas, and Kit spends his off-shift time getting to know colleagues of species he hasn't encountered before, and the Teveralites' octopus-like pets, called sibiks. One of those sibiks gets lost from its owners, who are among the natives refusing to leave, and begs crackers from Kit. And as Kit gets to know this particular sibik, and realizes how much he wants to get back to his family, he also finds an important clue to why so many are refusing to leave. This might be the key to making this intervention more successful than anyone had hoped. This is the strongest of the three stories, and it's funny, heartbreaking, and moving by turns. And while I'm not sure about the other two, this one is published in this collection for the first time, and is Hugo-eligible for the 2016 awards at MidAmericonII.The is is a very satisfying collection for fans of the Young Wizards. Recommended.I bought this book.

Unlike the other books , were the wizards go into the clinch with the Lone Power , these tales are different of feel , they are more about friendship and not so much about the never ending conflict with entropy . They are just as good , just as exiting and interesting as usual but it's more about working in a group . The first is about Halloween - of course things go wrong and there is lively action - spoiler alert ! ( zombies ) . The second is about Christmas - with a live tree and a lot of laughter and jokes - the third about Valentine's day - will Kit get his nerve up and tell Nita how he feels or not ? In between they have to save an alien race ,explain Earth movies to aliens and firmly put two hooligans on the right path . No job is too small or big for the wizards . So they are all about holidays , they all include a group of friends - old ones , new ones - on how to party with aliens and family alike and about good times . They are great tales , all three of them . The last one was very technical about gates , I learned a lot , it's like the technology is really out there . I definitely will reread that one and take notes , it was very interesting . And this from someone who has sometimes trouble with getting on internet . All in all , I would recommend these tales as a good addition to your library if you are already familiar with the universe of the young wizards . I would not recommend that you start with these , you might drown in the many names and references . Start with the first book , still one of the best .

Harry Potter taught me how to read. Young wizards taught me that other books were worthy of the same attention as Harry Potter, if not more. The first time I read one was forced on my by my 6th grade teacher, and it was Wizards Abroad. And when I realized there was more, no one could keep me away from the books.I have been an avid follower of the series ever since and when new books come out, it's like Christmas. And this one especially. Ha.Two wonderful short stories that have little or really no conflict in them, and instead are just the overworked Heroes getting some much needed relaxing and bonding time. One novel length story that deals with issues even our heroes haven't yet faced. This books everything. And as the series growers, so the characters and the author grow, and the content. Parts of this read much more of a true young adult book ( meant for young 20 somethings) then a teen reading material. And there is not one thing wrong with that at all.Since that first book all those years ago I've expanded my lain ready so much that the top 5 spots of my favorite, absolutely best loved books ever, have been very coveted and fought over constantly by books and characters. And this books just barged in and earned itself one of those a 5 spots, sitting unabashed among giants such as Thud from The Discworld series and the Wolves of the Calla from The Gunslinger series.

Many of Heinlein’s fans consider the novels he wrote in the fifties amongst the author’s strongest work; when he was at the peak of his talents. Double Star is considered by many to be the finest of his titles. Brian Aldiss called it his “most enjoyable novel.”

Whether it is the simplicity of a lively tale, the complexity of the situation, or the depth of characterization, the book has developed a loyal following. It also won Heinlein his first Hugo.

The story revolves around Lawrence Smith—also known as “Lorenzo the Great”—a down-and-out actor wasting the remainder of his life in bars.

When he encounters a space-pilot who offers him a drink, before he knows what is going on, he is on Mars involved in a deep conspiracy with global consequences. He is given a mission where failure would not only mean his own death, it would almost certainly mean an all-out planetary war.

“Heinlein’s novels of the 1940s and 50s shaped every single science fiction writer of my generation and everyone currently writing science fiction. Or making science fiction movies ... and Double Star is an excellent example of all the reasons why.”—Connie Willis

Double Star, by Robert A. Heinlein

From the Publisher Like many people, I go way, way back with Heinlein. My very favorite book (and one that stands out in my mind--and with much affection--to this day) is Tunnel in the Sky. I really, really wanted to go off to explore new worlds with a covered wagon and horses, like the hero does at the very end of the book. But one of the nice things about Robert Heinlein is that he's got something for everyone. One of my best friends has a different favorite: Podkayne of Mars. Go figure.                        --Shelly Shapiro, Executive Editor

From the Inside Flap One minute, down and out actor Lorenzo Smythe was -- as usual -- in a bar, drinking away his troubles as he watched his career go down the tubes. Then a space pilot bought him a drink, and the next thing Smythe knew, he was shanghaied to Mars.Suddenly he found himself agreeing to the most difficult role of his career: impersonating an important politician who had been kidnapped. Peace with the Martians was at stake -- failure to pull off the act could result in interplanetary war. And Smythe's own life was on the line -- for if he wasn't assassinated, there was always the possibility that he might be trapped in his new role forever!

Peace with the Martians is at stake, and failure to pull off the act could result in interplanetary war. Smythe knows nothing of the issues concerning interplanetary trade and equal rights for aliens, but the handsome compensation is impossible to refuse. He soon realizes, however, that his masquerade could be permanent.

57 of 59 people found the following review helpful. What Price, To Play the Boards? By Patrick Shepherd The year is 1956. Eisenhower is in the White House, following a long line of military men to reach that post. And this slim book appears, presenting the wild idea of an actor, perhaps not even a very good actor, who manages to reach the position of head of state. Obviously an idea like this could only appear within the realm of science fiction! What a difference in perspective an additional twenty five years will make, as once more science fiction becomes fact. The route Lorenzo Smythe takes to reach this post is, however, just a little different from that of the real-world actor. The Great Lorenzo, as he styles himself, is conceited, arrogant, out of work, and down to his last half-Imperial when he is offered the job of doubling for a well-known political figure. The job is so obviously beneath his dignity that he is ready to turn down the offer when the Martians take a hand, and Lorenzo finds himself involved in murder, kidnapping, and slicing both humans and Martians into small pieces to flush down the disposal.Forced by these circumstances to take the job, Lorenzo is even more disturbed when he finds out the identity of the person he is supposed to double for, none other that the leader of the opposition party, Joseph Bonforte, whose politics, what little he knows of them, he despises. But his own inflated idea of his abilities allows him to steady down and start studying for the role, a role he will play for much longer than he could ever anticipate. This book is a character study, carefully and artfully detailing how Lorenzo changes under the influence of having to pretend to be someone he is not, aided by the immediate staff of the man he impersonates. It is fascinating to watch him change from someone you probably wouldn't invite into your home, to confused and beginning to search for some moral basis to his life beyond 'the show must go on', and finally to a man doing his best not just for himself, but for all intelligent beings, truly becoming the man he is portraying. The other characters here are pretty sketchy, mainly props to help move the plot and aid Lorenzo. This is most noticeable with Penny, Bonforte's personal secretary, who suffers from the typical Heinlein failing (at that point in his writing career) of portraying women as one-dimensional beings. However, this limited portrayal of these secondary characters does not detract from, but rather enhances by contrast the masterful portrayal of Lorenzo.Heinlein makes good use of his own experience in running for the California State legislature, as he describes the mechanics of running a political campaign, just how decisions are reached, how dependent a politician is upon the quality of the staff he selects, so that these items ring with real-world ambience. This is also probably the first book that clearly showed his leaning towards what would now be called Libertarianism, but this exposition is fairly muted, unlike some of his later works. And it wouldn't be a Heinlein book without his side commentaries: here he covers monarchies, civil servants, patronage, media management, taxes, unions, truth and lies, prejudice and xenophobia.Published at a time when a novel of character was practically unheard of in the science fiction world, this work, like so many others by Heinlein, expanded the boundaries of the field, another step in lifting it out of its self-imposed pulp ghetto and back to the world of literature. This is probably part of the reason this book earned Heinlein his first of five Hugo awards for best novel of the year, a record matched by no other author. The rest of the reason? It's a fun, fast, great read; a story that hasn't lost its power to engross, entertain, and expand your view of the world.--- Reviewed by Patrick Shepherd (hyperpat)

Lorenzo Smythe is one of Heinlein's most engaging characters, and a real departure from the typical Heinlein hero. He also goes through a lot of changes, as a good protagonist should.Heinlein generally doesn't have a lot of good things to say about politicians, but John Joseph Bonforte (another critical character) is his exception that proves the rule. He's honest, capable, caring - in short a saint among politicians.Another reviewer complained of too much politics, but that's rather silly in my opinion. The book is about the world of politics in the future, so it has to talk about it. But there is very little of Heinlein's trademark libertarian philosophizing. The book moves so fast, there isn't time for it.This is Heinlein's only short work to win a Hugo award, and I consider it quite worthy of the honor. It's not one of Heinlein's series of juvenile novels, but it can be read by teens as well as adults. Get it - it beats 99% of the science fiction ever written, and practically 100% of the stuff being put out these days.

By eternalgreenknight Heinlein was one of the best, and you would be missing out if you passed up the chance to read this, one of his many masterpieces. This story can still hold its own (despite being printed in 1957) against others in the genre- again, Heinlein was a master story-teller.Enough people have given the summary of the book, but Heinlein wrote beyond the surface. The story is of an actor who truly discovers a greatness within himself that he at first only pretended to own. It's a story of humanity- in the politics the actor must represent- that humanity must not be doomed to repeat the same mistakes of seeing itself superior to other races, but instead try to learn to live in harmony. Like any good story it takes believeable characters and puts them in seemingly real situations in fantasy worlds, and tells us how we could only hope to act were we in such a predicament.I'm lucky enough to own a first edition in great shape. I happened across it at a yard sale and had to pick it up. To me it was a "new" Heinlein novel as I hadn't heard of it. It's a light read, and although short, it's deep and fun. The plot loosely reminded me of a certain movie about an actor who impersonates the president... Of course this book was written LONG before that, and is much better. Read this book because it was written by Heinlein. Love it because it was well written.

About the Author

Einar Ingebrigtsen

Einar Ingebrigtsen has been working professionally with software since 1994―ranging from games development on platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and the PC to the enterprise line of business application development since 2002. He has always focused on creating great products with great user experiences, putting the user first. Einar was a Microsoft MVP awardee from October 2008 until July 2015, which he was awarded for his work in the community and in the Silverlight space with open source projects such as Balder, a 3D engine for Silverlight. For years, Einar ran a company called Dolittle together with partners, doing consultancy work and building their own products with their own open source projects at the heart of what they did. Amongst the clients that Dolittle has had over the last couple of years include NRK (the largest TV broadcaster in Norway), Statoil (a Norwegian oil company), Komplett (the largest e-commerce company in Norway), and Holte (a leading Norwegian developer for construction software). Today, Einar works for Microsoft as a technical evangelist, focusing on Azure and advising ISVs, which meant giving up the MVP title. A strong believer in open source, he runs a few projects in addition to Balder, the largest being Bifrost (http://bifr.st), a line of business platforms for .NET developers, and also worth mentioning is Forseti (http://github.com/dolittle/forseti), a headless auto-running JavaScript test runner. Additionally, Einar loves talking at user groups and conferences and has been a frequent speaker at Microsoft venues, talking about different topics―the last couple of years he has mostly focused on architecture, code quality, and cloud computing. A must have if you need to connect systems in real time By mario I'm a programmer in the .Net world since the very first release of the framework. I also adopted asp.net for my real-world projects abandoning the old asp framework used to create the older web application. Since then all the framework has evolved at an incredibile speed. Also the world has changed with a lot of New technologies and challenges to cope. Signalr is one of the most promising technologies both in web and "traditional" applications. This book is well designed and balanced showing all the opportunities and the employments of this technology. It's very well written with a lot of useful examples. Absolutely a must have if you're involved interconnecting systems in real-time.

That's what rock and roll is; it's relentless.” – Mama Cass A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. In the 1950s, popular music in the United States, Britain, and Europe jumped cultural tracks and went off in all directions, each form enjoying its own fan base, and its own way of overlapping with fellow genres. From the straight-laced life of the American 1950s, the social revolution that led to the unfettered 1960s spurred the accelerating development of rock music, an enormous industry of folk artists and hybrid masterpieces that could previously only have survived in a cell of “specialty” interest, along with an explosion of varying jazz styles. The African-American musical community massaged the traditional blues genre into countless personalities after discovering that it fit with almost every type of musical expression available, and even classical music splintered into a myriad of new interests, leaving the traditional viewpoint of the 19th and early 20th centuries behind. In short, musical exploration went off into a frenzy of change, and there were as many avenues of musical performance to join as there were distinct cultural groups to sustain them. On top of this fragmenting of styles, in which newly emerging social groups could adopt a distinctly tailored version for themselves, the era of the flower child dawned in California. This phenomenon increased both the options for original musical creations, and exponentially, the possibilities for melding the legion of styles, recently-formed social beliefs and behaviors, a new visual presentation and celebration of the self, and the celebration of traditionally revered melody and harmony. Such an age could not have served as a better societal laboratory in which to produce an enigmatic, talent-laden, highly intelligent, vocally-gifted, and contrasting artist to previous norms, such as Cass Elliot, endearingly known to millions as Mama Cass. Primarily hailed as a member of the legendary group, The Mamas & the Papas, Cass would lead other bands as the only female singer. Her fame there does not go unrecognized because these bands were of inferior quality. To the contrary, her work with the Triumvirate, the Big Three, and the Mugwumps, was exceptional. However, the blossoming hippie movement required an iconic hippie band, and The Mamas & the Papas were perfectly designed to serve as the prototype. Part of this lay in visual perception, as America was not yet prepared to adore a lead female singer who did not come from either a sanitized version of the Madison Avenue model, or the from the nature-fresh, abstract hippie image. Mixing the hippie beauty and cinematic, boardwalk look of Michelle Phillips, The Mamas and Papas soprano and former model, with the “earth mother” appearance and dark timbre of contralto Cass Elliot, not only made Elliot’s participation possible through a successful contrast, but enabled the group to assemble its distinct, accurate, and rich vocal personality. Once the band’s breakup occurred only a few short years later, Cass Elliot was free to move at will in the soloist’s world, and appeared on every important talk show, worked with dozens of famous artists from different generations, and compiled a discography considerably larger than is generally known.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, in spite of mistakes. By FMG I am a big Mamas and the Papas fan, so I enjoy anything about them, and especially about Mama Cass. But this book seemed to be hurriedly researched and had some mistakes. It was not John Phillips who opened the door when they met Cass - it was Michelle. (She tells about this in her book 'California Dreamin', and I've heard and read her tell it in interviews on TV, and in printed articles many times.) Also, Michelle did not write "You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again". It was written by Julia Phillips (no relation to John or Michelle). Still, Mama Cass was my favorite singer, and I enjoyed reading this in spite of mistakes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extremely helpful guide and an easy read. Highly recommended. By Regan Glover As someone who is learning from scratch how to utilize the many benefits of online marketing / media, I found this to be an extremely informative guide to starting a blog and making it work. There are great tips on how to get started, but also how to connect it to my business and ideas of where to reach out to strengthen the platform and readership organically (meaning for free instead of paying). Great read for beginners like me, and it's short so I can get started on my work instead of reading for 20 hours. Thanks so much, this was great!

Faye Hueston was born in a Salvation Army Home for Unwed Mothers in Los Angeles, California. Adopted at 18 months, she was raised in a home of affluence as the daughter of Fanchon of Fanchon and Marco, the foremost producers of musical revues in the ’20s and ’30s. Bing Crosby, Myrna Loy and Judy Garland were some of the performers who got their start in a Fanchon & Marco revue. Fanchon also became the first woman film producer in Hollywood in the 1930s. Faye grew up in the Hollywood of the ’30s, becoming a film actress herself in the 1940s. However, she was always more interested in writing and books. In her forties, while living in England, Faye embarked on a search for her birth parents, whose names she had discovered on her original birth certificate. Since the relationship with her adoptive father had been difficult, it was her birth father she most wanted to find. A friend sent her to the foremost medium in England, who told her that her father was dead, that he had been an alcoholic, and that he was filled with remorse for what he had done to Sarah. Three years later she found her birth mother through clues that came from the same medium. “Sarah” was the name of her birth mother, whom her father had abandoned when she became pregnant. None of this did Faye want to be true. Months later, her private investigator’s report confirmed the medium’s clairvoyance. Three years later she found her birth mother through clues obtained from the same medium. How the meeting with Sarah ended forms part of Faye’s story, which has many twists and turns along the way.

It's a detective story about the quest of adoptee Faye Hueston to find her birth father that offers a glimpse into her early life as the adopted daughter of the woman at the center of the entertainment industry during the 1930s. Full disclosure: I received a review copy.
