In this short, tightly-written memoir, a family of adult siblings disintegrates when the aging mother who invested in holding the family together is no longer able to do so. In THE NICE-NICE CLUB HOLDS ITS LAST MEETING, the family's "we love one another" façade which had “worked” for a long time crumbles, showing inner workings that were badly in need of fixing. The personal crisis is exacerbated by this family being a minister’s family that has long accepted that it must be the perfect Christian family. “People are judging Daddy by how we behave with one another,” warns the mother whose “We love one another” mantra has lost its controlling power as one of the siblings realizes there is no back up action, that people are behaving in ways that are not very loving? What happens when a person see the truth about the relationships in this family, to ask for honesty in their dealings with one another? By Lindagail This is a very good portrayal of the "family bonds" disintegrating upon the death of the matriarch whose age requires giving up her home and belongings. Denis does a very good job of describing how some pitch in "a little," and some "none," leaving the rest to that one person who does the right thing and picks up the pieces. And it is written by the spouse of that latter person, who has the perspective of seeing things from the outside of the dysfunctional family dynamics. I found it an interesting and well written piece portraying what many families will eventually deal with when the facades are washed away by the required work involved.

It reminded me of when my grandmother had to go to a nursing home and eventually Apassed away. She was the glue that made our several families one big happy family! Since she's been gone we have all "splintered" into parts of that family. But I digress:). Denis Ledoux did a marvelous job of mixing, the recipe turned out well. I expected nothing less after the marvelous job he did with his mother's memoir: We Were Not Spoiled: A Franco-American Memoir.I look forward to reading more of Martha's life story.

By pamela spurling This book was both instructive and a reminder of how things really get out of control when families have to go through the process of closing a chapter, a home, a life -- or in this case, The Nice Nice Club. Or, when families face the reality that much of their whole life was a facade. No matter how well intentioned each member felt themselves to be, most had very little if anything to do with caring for Ladora nor her things as the time came to close up her estate. Nothing was as nice as her nice imagination and nice desires had determined them to be -- not then or ever. In the end the obviousness of the opposite proved to be glaring. Not for her children, but for Ladora, it seems pitifully fortunate she never saw the true selves of her family---though, likely, she wouldn't have even seen them then. Had she really known them or had she been brutally honest with herself, she'd have go back and reconstruct her entire motherhood, maybe even her entire life... if reality could have ever been the real truth for her.
