The book deals with some very serious events that I was a part of, starting almost immediately getting out of my two-week indoctrination period: from hands-on trips to lock up to deal with troublesome inmates to a life-or-death situation in the control room in my fourth month of my six-month probationary period, through a couple of riots that took place right after my probation was up, as well as a year or so down the line being the first officer at two murder scenes. There is basically no plot to it; it is a series of events that I went through in what seemed a quick succession.

About the Author The author worked at the department of corrections, which included the state penitentiary and a small minimum security mini prison. This took place between the years of 1974 to the mid-to-late 1980s. Due to extreme stress of the job and personal life, he quit a total of four (4) times.

Here is evidence of the high price that was paid by the inmates and guards alike.This book is the real deal. After “retiring” from the state penitentiary, James Lloyd became my co-worker at the County Juvenile. Sharing his life, and his experience from “the big house” helped some of our juveniles avoid prison, and helped others (unfortunately) just prepare for it. An honest man that was well-respected. In the ugly world of incarceration that’s the highest honor.

James just barely scratched the surface of the things that was. Yes the prison is more safe, but th e stress and substance abuse of staff still remains. James is considerate to tone the violence down some in the book for the audience of readers. This book is of truth and experience. Thank you James for giving some of yourself to write this book. I know it could not have been easy.

It had a good mix of humor and edge of my couch suspense. Just picturing myself in some of the situations written about in this book gave me the chills. Thank you James Lloyd! I look forward to your next book.
