By Robert Redfeather We've had the stories of the Wraith and the Jack, now we have a complex and deep story in the Belter, and a good introduction to the Irezi. Not that the lives of the Wraith and Jack weren't touching, but the Belter's story of life on Europa . . . well, that's just f'd . . . so much so that it rings true. Remember reading Heinlein's "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel", or Asimov's "The Caves of Steel"? This, too, has that feeling of, "yeah, things could happen that way."

By Seattle Swim Mom This is another book by French and Bayless and it's stellar. They've created a world as varied as a mind can create and in this installment in the BRIGAND saga, the world is cold, bleak and strange. I love that the authors envision additional senses and beings beyond what we know and currently imagine. I think the strongest suit of the French/Bayless books are the characters that still resonate with me and I can relate to them in spite of the strange world in which they live.If you love complex characters who wrestle with both moral issues and their own desires, and you enjoy good, smart writing, get this book. You won't be disappointed. In fact, you'll become addicted.

An Adult Language Fantasy Worth Every Penny By Bill Anderson Length: Print, 102 pages; Audible, not yet available in audiobook format, but I wish this series was.The Belter's Story is one of those gems that, I'm guessing, would be great to listen to the author narrate --- perhaps Buck Flogging's book on creating an audiobook would be a great suggestion for her to read: How to Create an Audiobook for Audible: Advice for Authors, Recording and Formatting Info, and More for ACX, Audible, and iTunesAmazon Kindle Sales Rank when this review was posted: 8,207.Join me in the conversation by leaving a comment. The Belter's Story is the third story in the series Brigand, by Natalie French. This is one of the most entertaining, quick-reading fantasy I've read. In fact, it is outstanding.Let me start off by saying I have not read either of the two previous books in the Brigand series. You can be certain, though, that I will. The author writes in a crisp pace, yet continually we are passing through a maze of intrigue and awe. This is a fantasy written for adults. There are some f-bombs and just a very few sh-bombs.What is probably the best feature in this writer's style, is her ability to lead us along, allowing us to imagine one particular thought, then springing an alteration that catches us by surprise. Intrigue and surprise are the best way to keep us tuning in for more story. The single most upsetting point, for some anyway, is that this story ends on a cliffhanger. Of course, most readers would expect that, considering it is only a 102-page novella and is part of a series, but, I also know some readers of Fantasy don't read books that end on a cliffhanger. The below excerpt should give a good example of the flow and tempo of The Belter's Story:EXCERPTThen his weapon stopped. I didn't know if it was empty or had malfunctioned from being fired for so long. It didn't matter. The ocean of diggers surged up and over Rox, burying him in carapaces and claws. Armored as he was, sooner or later they would breach his suit and then —STOP! it took me a moment to realize I hadn't spoken aloud. Jase. Whatever you are. Please. Don't do this. They didn't know. How could they?I could feel Jase and the others. They were there, but they were silent. Something else hung at the periphery of my awareness and I noticed the tendrils that curled among the europine nodes nearby had become brighter and more distinct. There was something being said that I couldn't hear. The tide of diggers subsided and I could see Rox again, prone and awash in a pulpy mass of shredded diggers. There were little wisps of vapor jetting from his armor, in the joints, where he was most vulnerable. They hadn't torn him apart like Jase, but there wasn't much doubt his suit had been breached.I picked my way across the wreckage of a thousand dead diggers and wiped a thick lavender sludge away from the faceplate of his helmet. His somashell was still functioning and, though unconscious, he was still alive.Bottom LineThis is going to be a fun writer to read and watch grow over the next decade or two. Five Stars despite the cliffhanger.
