By Phantom Prowler Showing his diversity as an author, Jason Werbeloff ditches his signature futuristic sci-fi psychedelia for something a bit more sentimental, if not still a bit weird, for this new and fresh pre-apocalyptic love (?) story, centering on Harold, a lonely old widower waiting patiently for the end of the world, who one day happens to find a happy distraction from the mounting chaos surrounding him. This is a bittersweet story that left me in need of a hug, but it's masterfully written, as one can expect from this extremely creative and versatile author.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Friends in need are friends in deed. By Lisa Jason has again managed to touch my heart and leave me with huge tears rolling down my face. I might need a hug too. There's something very special about this author, and it manages to shine through in every tale that he writes. I consider myself very lucky to have discovered this fine storyteller. Yep, I would recommend EVERYTHING by this author. He's a definite keeper.

Cracking, Beautifully Written Story By Kay Smillie As the story begins, the reader is aware that Harold is in his eighties and has just lost his wife, Fanny, after a fifty-nine-year marriage. As the apocalypse is on its way, everything has changed. Every 'normality' that Harold used to rely on, has gone.Then he meets Nicholas and his whole world changes again.I loved the juxtaposition between the personalities and the characters of Jason, Nicholas and Harold. I loved the fact that Harold had taken on the role of 'protector', something he never did for his own flesh and blood. I loved the closeness. I loved that Harold's wife had been called Fanny. Boy, did that make me giggle!Well written, beautiful and tugs at the heartstrings. People are people, but their true nature shows at the end of the world. Jason Werbeloff never lets me down.This story is one of eleven fantastic stories included in the Obsidian Worlds collection, which was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
