I had ample motivation for writing this book. The possibility of some new income certainly has to enter a writer's mind before undertaking such a venture, though I do not have any illusions of a big payday. I also wanted to see how difficult it is to get published for the first time and if it was even possible for someone like me, whose experience included almost exclusively newspaper work. But there were other, more important considerations. The experience was therapeutic, and I honestly wanted the world to see more clearly how tough living with a terminal illness can be. Maybe those who read the book will have a newfound compassion and understanding for those who suffer daily, and maybe they will find ways, if only small gestures, to make the patient's life more fulfilling. For someone with bad lungs, there is ample time to write and watch television. I can only tolerate so many reruns of insulting sitcoms, so I chose to give the book a shot. Regardless of how well it sells, I am glad I did it. I hope the family and friends of those who suffer from lupus and related diseases come to better understand what their loved ones endure and, as a result, show them the love they deserve. The book is meant to allow people to experience, if only through words, what the lupus patient suffers regularly: pain, frustration, hopelessness, and depression-all wrapped in one destructive package.

Living With Lupus - Fine Book By Robert Mull "Living With Lupus" is a must read for all those who personally contend with its daily challenges and for all of us who know and care about someone with Lupus. Mr. McAFee takes us from his life as an active, healthy sports writer and trout fisherman through his journey to dreading to get a shower and dress with his remaining 28% lung function. The wiles of Lupus, and its treatments, often bring uninvited (dreaded) guests and the author seems to have encountered most of them --- lymphoma, IgA nephritis kidney ailment, interstitial lung disease, bouts of pneumonia, and depression. If you know someone with Lupus or who is acquainted with a Lupus sufferer, "Living With Lupus" would be a fine little gift.

Sharing the Good, the Bad and the UGLY By Betsy "Living with Lupus" was written by my friend, Paul McAfee and offers a raw honesty of his battle and journey with Lupus. It's hard to understandthe complications, side-effects, and mental, spiritual, and social impacts of a physical disease unless you have walked that path. Paul was openly vulnerable in letting us "see" the good, the bad, and the UGLY of living with a Terminal and Chronic Disease, and still offered his wonderful sense of humor throughout the pages. I hope you will take time to purchase and read this book if you suffer from a Chronic Disease or love someone who does ... it made a difference for me.In Loving Memory of my Friend, Paul (1961 - 2015)

He was a kind, thoughtful and very intelligent person. I was not among his close circle of friends, just a co-worker, but I had great respect for him. Paul passed away over the weekend. He will be missed.
