In this nostalgic rendition of postwar Albuquerque in the Fifties and Sixties, seven authors bring their unique perspectives as they share memories of growing up in what could be described as a "Norman Rockwell" time in our country's history. This anthology features seven voices from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds who tell their stories of childhood. No two stories are the same. One takes you to the candy counter at Fedway Department Store. Another talks about the debilitating disease of polio. Some stories hint at discrimination and cruelty, a reality during that time in history. One story deals with the devastation of the Bataan Death March from a child's point of view. One deals with the Fourth of July, not as a patriotic holiday, but as an adventure into the vast world of fireworks. These stories will move you to laughter and to tears. More importantly, you will share the optimism of our writers and the nostalgia of the times as you are reminded of the taste of fresh apricot empanadas, the aroma of warm buttered tortillas, the sweet honey combined with puffy sopapillas, and the magic that was once childhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Most biographies and autobiographies seem, in this reviewer's opinion, to let us into the world of someone famous or historically important. We seek to better understand people like Abraham Lincoln or John Wayne, we look at parallels in our lives to Winston Churchill, Susan B. Anthony, or Audrey Hepburn. But what about memoirs and biographies of the "normal" people.Books like this can be infinitely more relatable. They become like a dialog with someone we've just met - getting to know their personal stories, seeing the lessons in life they've learned - perhaps lessons we've shared, perhaps those we haven't yet learned.Apricots and Tortillas is such a book. In it's pages we glimpse not a single snapshot in time, but the literary equivalent of a photo album depicting a certain time in history, in a certain place, from the viewpoint of seven people. Woven together the individual stories paint a rich picture of life in post-war Albuquerque. The story is painted in words and emotions, and keeps the reader interested throughout.Whether or not you have any interest in Albuquerque or the years after WWII, the stories are still enriching and enjoyable.

By Aardvark I really enjoyed reading these stories from the viewpoint of kids growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the postwar years of the 50's and 60's. The stories bring back some of the challenges facing the mixture of cultures during those rapidly changing times. Everyone can identify with the images presented by these authors. They were humorous, sad, romantic and impressive renditions!

It at once made me nostalgic for childhood and immensely grateful how much more tolerant our society is than it was in the 50s. I appreciate all of the authors' willingness to share such personal memories.
