Hennessee This is a beautifully put-together book, full of excellent artwork and some fascinating glimpses at the design process that goes into making Doctor Who. The frame-worthy art cards in the back are a wonderful bonus, including some images not included in the book, as well as concept art of a "Zygon Cave" for an upcoming episode in the new season.However, some of the organization is a bit of a jumble, and one would have liked to see more images of the designs as they appeared on-screen. There is also a typo on the very last page, where a "New Earth" hospital scene is labeled as a generic "fantasy world" and said fantasy world image is labeled "New Earth." It's also VERY tilted towards the post-2005 series in ways that make the "50 Years" claim feel a bit of a stretch. True, there's a huge amount of high-quality artwork readily available from the new series, but there are a LOT of classic series designs and blueprints still extant whose absence seems a real shame.This is a wonderful trove of artwork, but the short shrift it gives the original series makes it fall far short of being a definitive collection. Get this, but hang onto your copy of "Doctor Who: The Early Years" if you want a better look at some of the original icons of the series like the TARDIS and Dalek blueprints, or "The Barry Newberry Signature Collection" that covers some of the best designs the 60s and 70s.
8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Title Misnomer By Phil Rosenbach I highly anticipated the arrival of this book when it was first announced several months ago. Now that I have it, I will admit, it’s not entirely what the title implies. Let it be known that while it is a beautifully made, 288 page book, it covers very little for the Classic Era.Each section has a few pages of written information, and photos/ concept art work from the Classic Era, which is followed by an enormous amount of concept art, as well as photos of some the screen used props from the new series. Each of which has a nice rundown of what it is, who the artist is and for what show it was made for. Once I opened it, I could not put it down. In many instances, I wish the makers of Doctor Who would have used some of these rejected concepts. Additionally, the inside back cover has an envelope that contains about a dozen works of art on card stock, varying in size. Some of these are in the book, but most are not. If someone was clever enough and so inclined, I’m sure these could be arranged in a way to make a very nice poster.Pros: A very well made, beautiful book with more art work than you could imagine. And while it is heavy on these works of art…Cons: …it is short on words. And as stated, it doesn’t cover much of the Classic Era.MY BOTTOM LINE: If you already have a book that covers the illustrations of the Classic Era, this is a perfect companion that will carry you into the new series. And if you are more of a fan of the new series of the old one, this would be excellent for you as well. In spite of what it lacks, in my opinion, I have to say that I feel that this is one the better books which as been published in the last two years.

By Nick Beautiful book, albeit concentrating more on the post-2005 show and slightly lacking in classic material. Churlish to dwell on that though, as this volume is impeccably produced and written with the eyes of absolute experts whose love of the material shines through. Such fun to luxuriate in all the design what-ifs and could-have-beens and see both detailed plans and concept sketches of sets, gadgets, tech and monsters. Probably one of the most stunning books ever about Doctor Who. Any chance of a Volume II? More like this, please!
