Baxter As a general rule, memoirs and autobiographies that read like novels hold my interest better than collections of stories, and I seldom read poetry. But Mary Bast’s collection of short stories and poems is the exception. When I picked up this book, I could not stop reading. Not once did I skim. Not once was I tempted to put it down. Strange, when I consider that the first piece in the book summed up her entire life in 153 words. So, why did I keep reading? Because I wanted to know “the rest of the story”—what was between and behind her well-chosen words. She delivered with guts and honesty. And how clever is “Feline Foibles” in which Bast looks at the world and human “beans” through the eyes of a cat who writes poetic letters to his cuz, e.e. cummings style. A real treat.
