A book about the human psyche and how lives are affected by others By Aldfrith Aern Are you looking for tons of fast-paced action, light-hearted adventures, and maybe an OP MC? Then move along; there's nothing to see here; this is not the story you are looking for.Instead, it abounds with wonderful prose, some sharp-witted comments, interesting side characters and a deep look into a broken mind trying to piece itself together through a foray into the AI driven future-science VR game that was handed to him. This is not LitRPG; this is honest-to-goodness Sci-Fi that happens to make VR gaming a big part of the connected story that all comes back to one man's struggles.Again, this is a book for people who like to think, not just about wine, women and song, but the deeper things in life and issues people have to deal with. If you're willing to spend some time with it, you won't be disappointed.

Its available for free if you go look for it. This portion that you are considering buying is deemed book one, book 2 is also done online, and book 3 is well in progress based on the online postings, with the author maintaining a good pace. Continue Online combines a "guy gets into a VR world run by AI that is more then it seems and has its own agenda" scenario with some in depth character development, with both elements being well done. The main character is initially very depressed, and the overall feel is accordingly a bit heavier then something like Sword Art Online (an anime, but the best I can do for a comparitor). It seems that because of the heavy characterization vis-a-vis the main character, some fans of lighter fare such as Sword Art Online are not enjoying Continue Online, while others are really appreciating the in depth exploration of the main character.Although, I am enjoying Continue Online, it might work better as a web serial than a book. While there are a variety of sub-plots, mostly related to the VR game, the overall plot development is very slow and meandering, and even by the middle of book 3, the overarching plot is thin enough that I could easily describe it in a few sentences. Even in book 3, the various adventures in the VR world have not really been linked up to the over-plot or explained. In this respect, Continue Online is a bit like an anime but with stronger development of the main character and his struggles. I am enjoying this mix, but those who want their books to read like a book with a central plot, a beginning, middle and end could have a different reaction. How I ultimately feel about Continue Online might depend, to an extent, on where its going, and whether the over-plot ripens into something meaningful. That said, I am enjoying the serial, and definitely do plan on continuing.

Been reading tons of RPGlit the last few years in addition to my usual fare and this blew me away. This isn't the standard guy joins magical immersive rpg game then proceeds to level and crush everyone because he has some..intangible strength. There is some of that, but it pretty much came down to luck and it being given to him for mysterious reasons that are explained a bit. It also takes a second seat to the actual development of the character and his place in the world. The leveling and fighting ends up irrelevant for the character. All in all I was very surprised and when I saw how polished this was on Royalroad and gave it a buy here as well.A side note. I even gave this to my mother. She loved it.
