Philip W. Natale III spent his fiftieth birthday in a jail cell, homeless and addicted. Substance abuse ruled his life.
But the death of a fellow addict stirs something deep within him and, ten days later, Natale quits methadone cold turkey. A month later, he quits Valium and Klonopin—as well as the pot, fentanyl patches, and other substances that controlled him for so long.
Recovery is an arduous, punishing process both mentally and physically, but Natale perseveres. Life, a clear mind, and sobriety eventually replace the agonizing withdrawal symptoms and, after twenty-three years of substance abuse, he is himself again.
The I of Hurricane Me documents Natale’s progress from addiction and withdrawal to recovery and redemption. His powerful short stories and poems reveal the hardships of homelessness and the grim toll of drug abuse, while also recounting insightful, and even humorous, episodes of life on the street.
A moving, gritty depiction of one man’s struggle to reclaim his life, this is ultimately a story of hope. Through courage and determination, Natale broke the shackles of dysfunction, pain, and torment. To witness his struggle is to share the lowest—and highest—points in his life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfully detailed, and complex. Something new. By Robert J. Crowley I can't recall when I enjoyed a book this much. Natale's account could have been dreary, but instead it is wonderfully entertaining and filled with fascinating details that made his various experiences really come to life. This is not just a tale of recovery and certainly much more than simply an addict's life story. The excellent writing and skillful use of the reader's point of view against the author's stands out and makes this book a page turner. It is full of meaning, never too obvious, and truly engaging. I suspect others will latch on to this book as I did, and see it almost as a new form of literature.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I would like to have every young person read this; it's such a powerful story based on the choices we make. By MH I can honestly say that this book touched me in so many ways. My thoughts as I read it continuously went back to thinking of how strong the author was to be able and willing to tell the truth of his addiction with all its pain and sadness. How redeeming to think that he shared this with us. I believe if anyone were thinking of getting involved with drugs, this author's true story would make a difference in that person's choices. Additionally, what is uplifting in this tale is that one can overcome such adversity and go on to a redeeming life. I give him an A-plus for sharing his thoughts and experiences in such a powerful way in order to help others.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Honest and moving By Wm M Aronson This book put a face to addiction and homelessness for me. The authors honesty and refusal to sugar coat the path his disease led him down was refreshing and a change from what i have read in the past. There was a great prize at the end of the story and that was the authors ability to be ok with who and what he was and is. The triumph is to find the real definition of ambition , its the ability to accept ourselves for who we are and to find out there is a greater plan for us. It is remarkable ,the paths that some of us are taken down in order to emerge at the other end. Thanks to the author for sharing the gifts that he has received .
