This memoir tells the saga of a family that left Harlem, New York in 1949 and travelled to San Francisco, California eventually ending up in SOMA at the alliterative address of 333 Third Street where they resided from 1952 to 1957. A series of coming-of-age and slice-of-life stories chronicle what it was like to experience the chaos of urban renewal, the challenges of living in SOMA in the 1950s, and most important how a mother’s love and determination smoothed out the highs and lows of an economically difficult household.

His mother's and heis and his siblings' bravery in their determination to get a good education need to be told By Badgerette Mr. Leath describes a San Francisco even long-term City residents would not recognise if they are white. He does this with no bitterness or vitriol, just tells the stories of what happened to his family over many years in personal, straight-forward terms. His story the "Hanger Tree" is so poignant it made me tear up. His stories of integrating two schools are particularly well told. His mother's and heis and his siblings' bravery in their determination to get a good education need to be told. His stories are always interesting to the reader, even if they have not experienced themselves the episodes first-hand. His sincerity shines through every story.

A wonderful set of stories on a colored boy's life in mid 20th century in San Francisco By Najwa Jardali A wonderful book of stories of a colored (African American) boy's life events in the 1950s/60s in San Francisco, California. Charles leath has a unique conversational tone as he tells us the trials and tribulations of the boy's life events and interactions in his neighborhood on third street. One engaging element in this book is the historical context interwoven throughout the stories as it relates to this boy's experience in a somewhat tolerant San Francisco in the turbulent era of the civil rights movement that was raging throughout the country. I highly recommend this wonderful vignette of an African American boy's life in the mid 20th century in San Francisco.
