About the Author Vlasta Diamant’s background was originally linguistic–MA in German and English. After the studies in her native Croatia, followed by those in Germany, she emigrated to US. Free to explore her talents, writing being one of her early-on emerging gifts, it took a backstage to visual arts. All the while, she wrote her experiences in the New World on her art journey through the hippie and later art periods. While teaching art, she wrote, staged and produced in several schools in 1998: 1. Once Upon Skates, play, published in 2009, (8-10y.o.) 2. This Really Happened, 2010, true animal stories (9-12y.o) and adults. The domain ApplebiteWorks.com offers a comprehensive look at different facets of Vlasta Diamant’s work: prints, design, photography, videos, on-line publishing. A very insightful book By Roko Bujas Having lived through the events in Vlasta's book, I can say she has described this period of Yugoslav history well and vividly. It brings back many memories from my youth in former Yugoslavia. Written with fine feminine insight and observations, the narrative provides an accurate picture of Yugoslav society at the time, while revealing personal explorations of personal spiritual values as well. I recommend this book for anyone seeking to gain an understanding of the territory's wars, which broke out in the 1990s.

What I especially liked was everyday life and personalities - vividly told and shown - in words, photos and drawings. Here I found messages from and about times and places that to me are just history or "over there in Europe" - making me care about otherwise unknown individual lives, faces and personalities. All real life, but told with literary flair – reading like good fiction, while revealing the author, her people and scenes –the ordinary made extraordinary.
