0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a good example of what books can be these days By Escrit Lit Company Man is an interesting little book in a lot of ways, a good example of what books can be these days, as opposed to what they used to be when books had to be printed and trucked around to sell. And to illustrate something I’m dying to point out.It’s a “novella” in 6 parts, a simply written future dystopia tale with a lot of licks from the Hunger Games-style world where a wonderful if creepy city sits amid wastelands occupied by vagabonds. A corporate thing, with corporate persuaders/hitmen—visualize it as a lot like the Matrix—narrated by an Agent. Or something.There’s a downside, I’ll mention up front and get it over with: there’s no ending. It just stops. You get the feeling of a webserial lopped off to make a book. Whether there will be more books is not specified. Not a deal-breaker, but still…It’s well written. And let me stress that that doesn’t mean “Good Writing”—the author is young but doesn’t mess things up by trying to be authorly. He tells the story simple and deadpan, which is how it wants to be told. I read it and liked it.One thing I’ll mention is a literary technique that I greatly admire, unless the writer screws it up, which Hooper doesn’t. This is probably a spoiler, so if you want stop reading now and get the book it’s under a buck and/or free and a quick painless read.The technique is that each section is narrated in first person by a different character. That might not sound all innovative, and it isn’t, but you don’t see it much and it’s not a stunt here, it’s a very good way to work it. Some of my much-loved books do this.Louis Auchincloss’ “The Embezzler” was probably the first time I saw it and it knocked me out. The title character tells the story, then his best friend/rival tells the same story from a different perspective, then his wife (and friend’s lover) tells it all over again. The layering is a tour de force and it remains one of the best book of his gimlet-eyed examinations of Knickerbocker society. Anybody curious about this technique should read The Embezzler right now.It is also, in a different application, the organization for Larry McMurtry’s “Leavin’ Cheyenne”—and helps pop that book up above his usual West Texas missives. Here we have lifetime friends recounting their life stories, essentially. But this time one guy tells about when they were young, his best friend tells about middle age, and the girl who was friend and lover to them both tells about their old age. Again, the echo and overlay of the three viewpoints expands and embosses the story beautifully.Company man is also told by two man and a woman, but no triangle here: the girl is sister to the sociopathic Company killer and in an unconsummated attraction to the best friend/victim. That whole 3-D thing is not as prominent, but it’s there to be had and illustrates the range of how this simple but very powerful technique can be—IF APPROPRIATE.Not to turn this review into a literary essay, which I already did, but anybody who likes Company Man, and many will, would enjoy the other two books I mentioned. And anybody aspiring to be a writer wouldn’t regret the time to read all three.
