This is a memoir of Jim's experiences of homelessness and schizophrenia.This book may be of particular interest to those studying or treating schizophrenia, because Jim began hearing voices well after the age of forty, and because of his description of the emotional trauma of beginning treatment and suddenly losing all of his friends.I more generally recommend this book to anyone working with the poor, the homeless, the downtrodden, or the mentally ill, for people whose loved ones are facing such difficulties, and of course, for people suffering such difficulties themselves.Through Jim's memoir, I realized many things:1. Each person has within them some important, special thing that gives meaning to their life. For Jim, his patent and inventions are especially important to his self-concept as someone who creates useful things.2. The importance of our connections to other peoples--sometimes, even imaginary people.3. The particular nature of an individual's schizophrenia may contain some helpful function--in Jim's case, providing him friends when he had none.4. People really do need some sort of support when starting treatment for schizophrenia.5. Many of our systems for helping the poor are over-complicated or do not function as well as intended.
