Great courtesans are born, not made. With rare exceptions, the life a courtesan embarks upon can take turns and provide adventures—and advantages—more gratifying and sometimes more dangerous than anything she could have imagined at the start… as Catherine Noelle Verlee discovered. Born to humble French parents in India in 1762, by a series of incredible events she traveled to France via South Africa, Portugal, London and Paris with her lovers, who were distinguished, generous, and many. In Paris, she survived the French Revolution, and was the best friend of Napoleon’s beloved Josephine. How was it that this infamous beauty, a notorious courtesan, achieved her heart’s desire, married Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand--scion of a noble house and effectively ruler of France while Napoleon campaigned--and even became a princess? Was it because she knew how to keep a secret? Or...

Catherine's ambitious character is revealed as she moves from India to England to France. Much of the pleasure in this book is reading about Catherine's fashionable dresses and love for jewelry. As a bonus, one can visualize Marie Antoinette's life in Versailles, how the women in her court—one of whom is Catherine—sway through the hall of mirrors, float over parquet in silk gowns, as they attend to the demands of the queen.McNiff's descriptions of clothes ("gauzy shawl lay like a whisper around her shoulders"), and jewels ("tiny rock crystal heart set in seed pearls"), and enticing words ("vetiver reed woven shades," "transparent shahtash wool," "retroussé nose," "voice resonant and languid," "tall stooks like miniature pyramids," "crackle and boom of canvas unfurling," "scurrilous rumors," "white cotton lawn," "milk white horses"), and details of fans ("artist-painted chicken skin"), and food ("hen in sauce of sour cherries," "a dish of river fish sautéed in butter"), and bursts of passion in the first sensual, forbidden Indian romance, and the explicit or at times laugh-provoking sex scenes ("Talleyrand plunging and bucking"), bring the characters and era to life. It is a feast to read.

By awgoreau As a historian, I was deeply impressed by this novel’s grasp of the complicated politics of colonial India and the East India Company, and how those machinations and relationships influenced people's lives. The characterization of George Grand is splendid, as is the psychological portrait of the unravelling of his attraction to Catherine. Now, for Catherine. The novel make us feel her trials and disappointments fully and at the same time allow her to spring forth from them without losing our sympathy. The writer show her flaws and weaknesses, but we only grow more fond of her as the novel progresses. Her extraordinary capacity for making the best of the most frightening or painful circumstances is uplifting. The sex scenes are wonderfully done--especially the first encounters with Talleyrand. It's so hard to write those, and this compeling book does it brilliantly.

Berman I usually am not interested in historical fiction, but this one grabbed and kept my attention from the start. The main character, Catherine, was well-developed and colorful. It was fun to follow her adventures from an innocent girl in India to one of the most famous women of all time in France. She suffered many of the insults that all women did at that time since she was thought of as a mere sex toy for men. However, she managed to climb out of that position into her rightful place in society.
