Merle McClung’s memoir "A Rhodes Retrospective" is a two-volume set: Volume I “My Education” and Volume II “My Career.” In Volume I McClung tells his story from impoverished childhood in a small Midwestern town (Montevideo, Minnesota) to unlikely scholarships to Harvard College, Oxford University and Harvard Law School. His improbable rise from bottom to top socio-economic status, underscored by winning a Rhodes Scholarship, is not a “rags to riches,” but rather a “rags to respect” story. In his memoir, McClung pays tribute to some of those who made it possible: his working mother (Martha), his public high school English teacher (Claude Dziuk), his Republican mentor (Ollie Rekow) and his Constitutional Law Professor (Archibald Cox). Only later in life does McClung come to appreciate how much basketball has paved the way to a larger world beyond the game.

Personal Information Management (PIM) is the art of getting things done in our lives through information. How do we - can we better - manage our information at home, at school, at work, at play and "@large" in a global community? How do we use information not only to know but also to represent, communicate and effect useful change in the world around us? In the study of PIM, does the search for practical methods with practical impact lead to methods that are "massive open on-line"? Can the ancient practice of storytelling help us better to weave our fragmented information together? In the practice of PIM, how can our information best serve as "near knowledge" - close at hand and, through our information tools, serving in practical ways to extend the knowledge that's "in the head"? If attempts to multitask lead to ineffective, even dangerous, instances of task switching and divided attention, can better PIM help us to realize, instead, opportunities for "multi-goaling" where the same time and effort accomplishes not just one but several goals? These and other questions are addressed in this third and final book to conclude the series on "The Future of Personal Information Management". Part 1, "Our Information, Always and Forever", covered the fundamentals of PIM and then explored the seismic shift, already well underway, towards a world where our information is always at hand (thanks to our devices) and "forever" on the web. Part 2, "Transforming Technologies to Manage Our Information", provided a more focused look at technologies for managing information. The opening chapter discussed "natural interface" technologies of input/output to free us from keyboard, screen and mouse. Successive chapters then explored technologies to save, search and structure our information. A concluding chapter introduced the possibility that we may see dramatic reductions in the "clerical tax" we pay as we work with our information. Now in Part 3, "Building a Better World with Our Information", focus shifts to the practical present and to the near future. Part 3 is in three chapters: • Group information management and the social fabric in PIM. How do we preserve and promote our PIM practices as we interact with others at home, at work, at play and in wider, even global, communities? (Chapter 10). • Designing for PIM in the development of tools and in the selection of teachable (learnable) "better practices" of PIM. (Chapter 11). • To each of us, our own concludes with an exploration of the ways each of us, individually, can develop better practices for the management of our information in service of the lives we wish to live and towards a better world we all must share. (Chapter 12). Table of Contents: Preface / Acknowledgments / Group Information Management and the Social Fabric of PIM / PIM by Design / To Each of Us, Our Own / References / Author Biography

Grudin No challenge today is more pressing than managing the rapidly escalating volume of information that would be of considerable interest to any of us if we could find and retrieve it. This book and the series that it concludes will reward anyone, whether their goal is to better manage their information, do research on the subject, or build an application or system to support others in their handling of their information.William Jones has worked intently on this topic for many years. His coverage is very broad, and he has thought carefully and deeply about the issues, pursuing them to the point where knowledge passes into wisdom. Because each of us is different, and each of us has many different relationships to different categories of information, this is a complex topic with no silver bullet. Yet this book will remain an invaluable resource for a very long time, whether as a foundation for research or as a basis for action, because no one is likely to come along with such a monumental grasp of the subject.

By mkljun This book provides a thorough overview of personal information management from both practical and academic point of views. Personal information management is something we all have to do it and it has no general approach that would solve all the issues we as users face while organising and maintaining our information. Part of it lies in the "personal" bit as we manage information in a way making sense to us. The last book of the series is divided in three parts which cover: the social bit of information management at work, school, home, play and at large, followed by a part about research and a look at how should future tools for managing information be designed, and concluding with a "hands-on" look at personal information management practices. This books provides something for everyone interested in this topic - be it academics who can find a lot of resources for further reading or just about everyone who manages information and wants to get ideas of how could some of the issues be approached.

Levy It's not easy to find coherent sources about how the digital world handles our personal information. Dr. Jones has not only researched the subject thoroughly, he has put together a series of books that examines personal information and its dynamics in the interconnected world of computers. This volume is Part 3 of the series, and it contains a wealth of insights and recommendations for all of us related to managing our personal information. Also check out his earlier book, Keeping Found Things Found.

By Lee P This trilogy has been one of the best that I have ever read and the most exciting roller coaster ride that I have been on. It is bitter sweet to have it end. I wish that there would be more installments. "ReGeneration" had a positive unexpected impact on me that changed the direction of some of my concepts. I'm not saying more because I don't want to issue a "spoiler alert". "ReGeneration" will be more meaningful if "Solarium-3" (Book 1) and "Haeven" (Book 2) are read first.Amazon's rating request asked for violence and sexual content. While there is some very minor content of both, there is nothing explicit and all of it in good taste. I would put it out for anyone to read.

By Father Noah In a Paul Harvey-esque “rest of the story,” the author takes us from the mountain top of Pikes Peak, Colorado where we last encountered the Solarians, to one mountain top experience after another in this conclusion of the Solarium-3 Trilogy. Another finely woven series of events and encounters OUTSIDE of the safety of the pod-city where they have been living, the small band of Solarians are brought to greater levels of safety than they ever could have imagined! This is an engaging, exciting and fit conclusion(?) to Spencer’s social and scientific experiment of the Solarium-3 Pod-dwellers. I highly recommend ReGeneration; just be sure to read Volumes 1 & 2 first, in order to get the full impact of the series.

By LS Maricopa, AZ John Spencer’s first two books of Solarium-3 The Trilogy (Solarium-3 and Haeven) took the readers through a very troubling – sometimes horrifying – journey of several seemingly ordinary people! As we now learn, these are very special people taken into a very special destiny! ReGeneration pulls you back down to Earth in this extraordinary story where you may very well find yourself more "grounded in the realm of the Spirit". If you think you know all about the supernatural, think again!

Read Ebook Acting Like It Matters: John Malpede and the Los Angeles Poverty Department, by James McEnteer

For thirty years John Malpede and the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD), have created electrifying political theater by confounding audience expectations. Made up largely of homeless and formerly homeless men and women from L.A.’s Skid Row, LAPD has evolved from staging “happenings” on street corners and in shelters to taking complex ensemble pieces to cities across the United States, Europe and Latin America. Instead of creating illusions, the LAPD strips them away. LAPD actors know first-hand about poverty, addiction, crime, homelessness, class prejudice and the political hypocrisy that sustains them. Life on the street leaves no room for irony. LAPD members, voiceless most of their lives, now given a voice and an audience, cut straight to the heart of the American social and economic dilemmas. No time for bull, just “the real deal.” LAPD performers are no longer merely messengers from Skid Row, adding a dose of street-level reality to the national perception of homelessness. They have become advocates for a larger understanding of how poverty, addiction and social deprivation are intimately connected to international violence and globalized greed. Pieces to this puzzle like all around us, but politicians and most media refuse to fit them together. The homeless and formerly homeless addicts and ex-addicts of Skid Row Los Angeles have nothing to lose by telling the truth. Disenfranchised, they are also uninhibited. Acting Like It Matters, tells how John Malpede came to organize a successful theater group on Skid Row. It traces their bumpy, eventful development from 1985 to the present, with a focus on the social and political issues the group raises, sometimes working with other street theater groups from San Francisco to London to Amsterdam to cities in Bolivia. For Malpede, theater is a vehicle, a dramatic way to confront and spotlight important inequities and injustices in our society. My book also focuses on these larger issues. Malpede and the LAPD have returned the theater to its cultural function as envisioned by the Greeks. Ancient classical dramatists thought politics was too important to leave to the politicians. Their plays were topical. Greek audiences expected to confront and consider issues and ideas that were relevant to their daily lives, not wallow in escapism. Even as politicians and corporate media bury news of economic, judicial and racial injustices, Malpede directs the victims of these prejudices – ethnic minorities, ex-addicts and ex-convicts, the lowest-ranking member of our society – to enact their dilemmas for middle-class audiences. Malpede knows that residents of Skid Row, the most vulnerable among us, are the canaries in the coalmine of our culture, harbingers of alienation and futility that now threaten middle-class stability and even survival. Malpede long ago recognized homelessness as a symptom of a society in trouble. He purposely turned his back on personal celebrity and wealth in order to spread this vital message. As noted festival and opera director Peter Sellars said: “John Malpede’s work will testify on the side of the angels.” Malpede's work is gaining increased recognition. The Queens Musem presented an LAPD retrospective in the winter of 2014, featuring an extensive exhibit and several LAPD performances. In 2013 John Malpede received a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in recognition of his theatrical achievements.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. great book By Mei Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) published this book in 1874. Most of the book is written as a epistolary novel in the form of letters written by the 'me' (Werther) to his friend Wilhelm. This book is typical for the 'Sturm und Drang'-period, which is a type of German literature written mainly in the period 1767-1785. It is a reaction to the rationalism of the Enlightenment and advocates listening to your heart, feelings take precedence. In this book the student Werther falls in love with Lotte, who looks after her brothers and sisters after the death of her mother. Lotte is engaged to Albert. Werther becomes friends with Lotte and Albert, even though it hurts him that they are engaged. After a while his pain becomes too much and he leaves town, but later decides to go back. I won't tell what happens then because I don't want to give away the ending, but there is a lot of emotions, feelings, hurt and desperation before this book ends. This version is the second edition of 1787. This e-book version has 1852 locations on a Kindle, which is about 110 pages in print. This book is in the public domain and can be found for free as an e-book on several websites. Amazon also offers this book for free in English. 'Die Leiden des jungen Werther' is a major literary work, and I recommend it to everyone who loves reading good literature. As a sample I copy the first few sentences of this book:Wie froh bin ich, daß ich weg bin!

I don't want to give up the plot, but let's just say, the title says it all. What's interesting, is that it was a best seller in 1775 when it was released. I think that's because it was different from what else was on the shelf :) I enjoyed reading this book, but then I don't think there's a book in German that I haven't enjoyed. For something by Goethe, it's not too hard, so a good confidence builder for someone like me who is trying to improve my German. My next book will be Faust, which my German friends assure me is a worthwhile challenge. Werther is a good vocab builder.

I have a copy of it myself, and enjoyed it very much. It sort of reminded me of the struggles I endured while trying to get my first shot at acting; I was terrified to make mistakes. Until I was cast in Hold Me, by Jules Feiffer, and the director knew exactly how to get the best responses out of me.Great reading for anyone in need of support.

Lauren Scott thought she was done with small-town living, but after a short, disastrous marriage and one too many incidents involving stalking and injury, she returned to Whidbey Island, Washington, where she was raised.

She just wanted to be happy.

Lauren wished only to get on with her life and career. She looked forward to spending time with the friends she'd had since childhood. But she never expected to be the target of someone's hate—nor did she expect to meet a man who kicked her heart into overdrive—and gave her the courage to confront her enemy.

Travis Hawke was a scarred military and police-force veteran. After years on the front lines, he had enough of violence.

He just wanted to be left alone.

On the island, he'd found sanctuary among the trees and beaches, and he knew it would be a safe place to wrap himself in peace and healing. The first time he met Lauren, he also knew she could change those plans. When he learned of her stalker, his retirement plans were put on hold. To save the woman who was healing his heart, he had one final mission ahead of him.

In order to find the peace he and Lauren both need, he has to find—and stop—the person who hates her enough to kill.

About the Author

Linda Clemons was fortunate enough to spend most of her adult life on Penn Cove, the setting of this story. Born a flatlander and having lived in several states, once she saw Puget Sound, she was hooked. She currently lives in Boise with her small furry companion, Charlie, who takes her for walks and, on occasion, lets her have part of the couch. She considers her relocation to Boise temporary, and she is determined to again make Puget Sound her home in the near future.

It made me laugh, smile, sad and outraged as I interacted with the characters in this short story. I really loved reading this tale and was rather sad when it ended as it was a quick read and well done. I'm so looking forward to doing more with these characters and see more of their adventures in the future. The story was well paced and was highly engaging. There were some parts I called before it occurred but there were also twists that left my mouth gaping in surprise and shock. This is well worth your time to pick up for an afternoon read. ^^

Leaves you wanting more By Amazon Customer Excellent little story that manages to be bigger than the sum of its parts.Trecheon's sort-of best friend is a hitman, and talks Trecheon into one last hit for big money. But the hit goes awry, and Trecheon finds himself in way over his head.I'm not used to reading furry fiction, where the furries interact with humans and everybody is cool with this. But this story is well-written, and makes me wish for more books about Trecheon and his adventures.

In the year 2030, there will be over 74 million baby boomers over the age of 65 living in the United States. This number does not include immigrants. The impact this data may have on housing and nursing care for the elderly helped to inspire the creation of ‘The Wrinkle Ranch’ a fast paced thought provoking story about a group of baby boomers who once lived together in a commune in 1960’s California. After decades of separation, the group reconnects in Arizona making a commitment to care for each other to the end…no matter what. It is a heartfelt story about a spirited group of friends now in advancing years forced to ask themselves: Where will I be at the end of my journey? Where will I go when there’s no room at the inn? Sharon is a feisty retired emergency room nurse and her son wants to move her into assisted living. She rejects his proposal and within a nation now blindsided by a housing shortage for the elderly, pursues an alternative. While at times humorous, detailed yarns are woven throughout to create layers of mini dramas: a love child, tales of a marriage gone stale, tragic loss, estrangements and love unrealized. It takes the spirit of the Yukon to help a Vietnam veteran tell his story helping him to reconcile with his past. Thought provoking scenes shed light on the effects of government intrusion, shocking exploitation and a debate on euthanasia. Amidst the chaos of barking Chihuahuas and health events managed with medical marijuana, there are joyful reunifications, a finding of true love and the inevitability of saying good-bye.

By Peggy Miller This new author's debut book is a heartfelt story about a group of young people that reconnect when they are approaching their senior years. With the nursing home shortage due to the large number of baby boomers seeking care and their desire to avoid living out their days at a 'wrinkle ranch', this group comes up with a unique plan to journey together. The book is entertaining and thought provoking and will leave you thinking about yourself, your friends and whether or not there is a quonset hut in your future......"let's get the discussion going"...

It is an uplifting book about a difficult topic that demonstrates real love between friends By Rhiannon This book makes you think about a topic that you may not have thought about before. The characters are so well developed that you really begin to relate to them in many ways. The ending is rewarding and this book is well worth the read. It is an uplifting book about a difficult topic that demonstrates real love between friends. You won’t be disappointed.

It is a beautiful story of brotherly love and charity By Mary Ellen Stackel I bought this book at the recommendation of a friend, not knowing what to expect. A group of friends who shared a free spirit lifestyle in their youth now find themselves sometimes alone and at a fragile time of life. They reconnect and decide to start the Wrinkle Ranch, a commune lifestyle at the other end of their lives. It is a beautiful story of brotherly love and charity. What I see and what they really lose sight of if why they are doing this. They think it is just self preservation but in reality they are performing the corporal works of mercy - the inborn desire to love others and care for them and be loved and cared for in return. They pledge to care for each other until the end, sometimes fearful of what the end is but somehow they make their lives as happy as they can be and accept the unavoidable aging and sickness that accompanies the journey. We see ourselves in all of the characters; bits and pieces of each of them are us. I think the book makes us think of what the end years should be like and if we all accepted the fact that we need each other, whether as a commune (which I would not like) or as a family, could life be better. As a Catholic, I would call what they experienced the grace given by God to see others as gifts and to cherish each life - giving and receiving love. I believe there is a spiritual undertone to this novel which is beautiful. There are many things to be gained from reading the Wrinkle Ranch. Well done.

Loving Vanessa By Janet Brown Easily one of the most unusual and moving love stories out there, this honest and insighful portrait of an unforgettable woman who lived life on her own terms right up to the last drink is meticulously and unflinchingly told. With the skill that his readers have come to expect, Jerry Hopkins shows the transsexual world and the people who live there, in careful and deeply affectionate detail. Thank you, Mr. Hopkins.

In 1962, Louis is just like any eight-year-old boy—curious and prattling off an endless string of questions. And then the seizures begin.

Meanwhile, the Cold War seems to be breeding erratic behavior. Louis’s family lives just twenty miles from a US Air Force base that is part of the US deterrent strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction. When a wealthy civilian neighbor begins building a bomb shelter to protect his family against a Soviet nuclear attack, Louis can’t stop thinking about it. One doctor even goes so far as to declare the boy’s seizures as psychological in origin, but eventually it’s determined that Louis has epilepsy—and his condition is permanent.

Rather than simply write off the young boy’s future, however, one female doctor pushes the family to run another test. It’s extremely painful, but it could change everything.

The Bomb Shelter pulls back the curtain on one of the strangest times in recent history, while also recounting the remarkable true story of a boy in need of a miracle. Whether you’re a Cold War buff or a fan of inspirational memoirs, this must-read autobiography reminds you of the subtle power of hope and gratitude.

Merrill, MD, PC Tale of Hope from the eyes of a mother and young son during the Cold War. Fabulous dialog. Profound psychological insights into both characters. Explores the effect of nuclear threat on a small town. Interweaves philosophical discussion into the mix in an easy to absorb manner.Should be a must read for Physicians, History buffs,Psychologists and the psychologically minded as well as all those who want to 'experience' a trying time in World history. The author does find redeeming aspects through the narration of the tale, a tale of a young boy and a medical 'miracle' - what that miracle means for a family, a mother, a town and the boy as well.

Wondering if we were all going to be blown up! It's also a story of unconditional love and perseverance as told by the mother of a child with health issues at the same time as these world events unfold. Really enjoyed it. Very well written.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love this Book! A Exciting Prequel to an Amazing New Series By Sara Miller I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.I adore stories about Vampires. Okay so my obsession started with J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series and has branched out from there. When I found out that Nazarea was starting a new series about Vampires I knew I was in for a treat and this book does not disappoint. It has a few new twists on the classic Vampire legends which I loved. Anytime an author changes it up with some new twists that I haven't already read a hundred times I'm excitedIf you are a newcomer to Nazarea's work then you will fall in love with herdescriptive writing style and her characters. She is fantastic at worldbuilding and her books are allEncompassing. Octavian is a very intense character, after he is tasked by his father to go after this woman he wants to make a new Princess of his line things begin to escalate rather quickly. His role as the Blade of the Raven demands respect and most fear him and his reputation which is well known. But this mission will rock him to the core. The hierarchy of the Houses is fascinating and there is a helpful guide that keeps us informed on how that all works which I flipped back to a couple of times just to clear things up. The last few pages of this give us some shocking information and the latter part of the book is a sneak preview of the next book in the series which is the Blood Scion which I cannot wait to get my hands on! I love that we got the prequel before the first book comes out. So many series release a prequel after the series is already started or even a few books into it before they go back and explain how we got to this point. It's a breath of fresh air that we are starting this out with knowing a good portion of the backstory first.

Caught my interest By lorraine M Interesting and left me wanting more way too short but it is a prequel.Vampires and humans living together after a plague likeIllness almost wiped out the human race.Since the vampire race require blood to survive, they hadno choice but to reveal themselves and offer up a solutionto end the virus.Introduction to the different houses, class/rank/lawsand the hierarchy of the vamps. (Set up for the full novel)A human, Farley Hart enters into the story and I’m guessingshe’ll play a major role in the full novel The Blood Scion thatreleases in Nov 2015.Count me in.I need to know more of Octavian and Farley.

By PopKitty A few years ago a trend was started in paranormal romance. We were ‘treated’ to vampires, zombies, werewolves and all manner of being in touch with their sad feelings and feeling all kinds of depressed about their place in the universe and high school. Let’s just say, I am not a fan.So I picked up The Scionless House not knowing anything about it and expecting much the same type of depressing, cringe worthy melodrama about zits and finding true love at sixteen (eyeroll). Well slice me off a big piece of humble pie because Nazarea Andrews sure put me in my place!Yay the return of vampires as they should be: mysterious, dark, powerful and sexy! This brilliantly written novella marks the beginning of The Scionless Legacy Trilogy. We are introduced to the twelve houses and a host of vampires all in different levels of importance and rank. We meet the hot as shit Octavian, or Tavian, who is ordered to find a woman and bring her back to his house, a woman he knows nothing about- not even the reason he’s sent to find her. We are thrown into the threat of internal danger and politics as we follow Tavian, his estranged brother and his knights on the journey. This is my role as Blade. To lead the Knights. To serve as advisor and assassin. And to protect his scion. It’s like the mafia with fangs and it’s FREE with not a sparkle or third period science class in sight so seriously, go get it! I am so excited about the rest of this series I can hardly contain myself. Nazarea Andrews, thank you for returning vampires to my spank bank!

By Amazon Customer Not sure where this book fits, the theory part is on the beginner level, the application part is conceptual, the interviews are for like people in high school thinking about careers. Would be a ok book for "smart" teens interested in a general understanding of the field. Overall disappointing considering the background of the people involved. It's priced as a college level textbook, which I hope it would not be used as.

Foreword The story continues in part two of Maggie's Bed and Breakfast. Maggie finds a book in a box of her mother's belongings that were left for her and her sisters. It turns out to be her mother's diary full of her own memories that reveal family hidden secrets and lies. Maggie keeps the book to herself as much as possible, wanting to read it first but finds it hard not to disclose some of her findings. She discovers some things that are so unbelievable that she has to wonder if they are real or just some of her mom's crazy scattered memories. Maggie continues to wonder just what her future holds and learns that she does not need to be related to be sisters. She is strong in believing that she will be able to overcome this memocoma condition that has become part of her life and prays that her sisters will not inherit it at all. Love plays a great factor in the girls getting through some tough times, with the help of the men and friends in their lives. Maggie finds out that sometimes things are not always what they appear to be. There are weddings and funerals entwined with more family drama or what I like to call “Life.”

I wasn't sure what I was going to expect - there is a steady flow of conversation between the characters and the plot twists are phenomenal. As I was reading I was able to perceive myself in the shoes of the characters. I was able to feel the emotions I naturally would have felt, mixed with the uncertainty for the character's futures. Really a great, quick read - definitely worth it. I want to know if there is a third book?

The story line as great - the plot takes a few turns I wasn't expecting. Book one "Maggie's Bed and Breakfast" was a great intro to the complexities of the characters. All in all I would read and I would read the next in the series. Kind of makes me want a bed and breakfast on a lake.

As punishment for plotting with his brothers to steal immortality, Garreth is suffering a freezing torment until the end of time. Again and again his fierce fighter's physique is frozen into a chiseled ice sculpture, his heart hardening like a diamond in his chest - only to thaw and resume the chilling torture. Until, like his older brother, Dethan, he is offered a reprieve from a goddess - in exchange for his allegiance in a celestial civil war.

Garreth lives to fight and fights to live. But while laying siege to an embattled city, he finds another reason to go on - a beautiful warrior woman named Sarielle, who commands a mythic beast through a mysterious and powerful bond. Terrified of her strength, the city rulers have kept her captive, and now she refuses to submit to a new master. As Garreth seeks to unleash her passion and melt the icy resistance of her heart, will he become her ultimate salvation - or lead them both to greater destruction?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Book in a Great Series! By Karli Copy gifted by publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest review.Like book one, Cursed by Ice takes sufficient time for world and character development. And like book one, it fully drew me in and ended with a great HEA and set-up for the next book in the series. It is a great book in a great series. The follow-up to Cursed by Fire focuses on Garreth, the youngest of the four warrior brothers who stole immortality from the gods and as a result were sentenced to unending torture. He and Dethan have another city in their sights to overthrow for their goddess and are working on breaching the walls when a flame haired, violet skinned woman appears on the wall, arms raised. Shortly afterward a wyvern appears and begins razing their troops with it's fire. Garreth senses a connection between the woman and beast, shoots her with his crossbow and attacks the wyvern with Dethan's god made sword. The city falls to them and Garreth learns the woman survived. He brings the healer to her, but finds she is soulbound to the wyvern. She carries the beast's sword injuries on her body, and the only way to heal them is to heal the beast, who fled to the mountains.Sarielle was a slave to the ruler of the city and a Wrena to the wyvern. Her sisters were held as leverage against her and she was chained in her room at night to ensure her submission. When Garreth tells her that all slaves have been freed, she doesn't believe him. And when he asks her to take him to the Wyvern so they can heal him, the only way to heal her and save both their lives, she doesn't trust him. But she senses the wyvern is fading and will die if she doesn't. And as time passes she sees that Garreth is trustworthy, as well as being very attractive. As Dethan watches his brother and Sarielle grow closer, he becomes increasingly determined to keep them apart to save Garreth from the wrath of their goddess. And he finds an ally in the beautiful, politically astute mistress of the deceased ruler of the city, Davine, who wants Garreth for herself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Better than book 1 By Ezinwanyi Cursed by Ice picks up right where Cursed by Fire ended. Dethan had just found out that he will be getting the aid of his youngest brother Garrett, on the mission to build an army while gathering worshipers for their patron gods. In book 1, Dethan’s punishment was nightly burning by god’s fire, whereas here, Garreth was continuously frozen for his punishment.Garreth was a more humble and likeable character than his older brother Dethan. Garreth was more sensible and cautious about his actions. Garreth accompanies his older brother to the city of Kith and there, he meets a slave girl named Sarielle. During their mission to conquer the city, Garreth learns that Sarielle has a bond with a wyvern (Dragon-like creature) and her life depended on the safety of the wyvern and vice versa. Sarielle has two sisters that the city elders held hostage, forcing Sarielle to usethe wyvern to protect Kith. While Garreth becomes attracted to Sarielle, he doesn’t lose track of the mission that goddess Weysa set him and Dethan upon.Garreth and Dethan finally sack the city and Sarielle asserts her independence, which put her on equal footing with Garreth. Thus the road to pursue their attraction was cleared, and they began a battle of wills.Better than book 1 but this series is not going to be memorable. It's just not on par with some of the new releases right now. I am on the fence about this series overall. I feel like it could really be good but it’s lacking something. The story telling was much better in the sequel and the main characters had more depth. There was even more involvement from the gods in this book. But the story needs a little more of something to propel it from average status. I will try book 3 in a few months.*Thanks to Tantor Media for the audiobook given in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 5++ Stars By pw reader Cursed by Ice is even better than the first in the series, Cursed By Fire. I didn’t think was possible since I loved Dethan and Selinda. Surprisingly, I loved everything about this story, too. Even the gods came through this time. Social issues such as unfounded biases and slavery are dealt with in this story as well as guilt and forgiveness. The main character are the voices of reason in a dog eat dog land. While this is certainly a romance story set in a wonderfully created medieval-oriented world, it is also a study in the relationship between siblings. I couldn’t help but wonder if Sarielle would be quite the mother hen when her sisters are grown as Dethan still is with Garreth. I’m glad I read his story first because in this one, I kept thinking Garreth should go ahead and take that punch at Dethan, he deserves it.Then there is the whole gods and goddesses to contend with by the brothers who have already spend hundreds of years being punished by them. These gods and goddesses that Ms. Frank has created are for the most part unlikeable beings with powerful egos and the abilities to match those egos. Like the Roman and Greek counterparts, they have qualities to both admire and disdain, such as jealous, pettiness, manipulative, and the desire to taunt others. They certainly keep the story interesting especially in this one where they show a charitable side I wouldn’t have believed them capable of having. It was through them that there were unexpected twists in the story that I didn’t see coming.Fantasy readers and all romance fans will enjoy this book, Cursed By Ice. Jacquelyn Frank has written an extraordinary series that engages both the heart and the mind. I highly recommend it.Copy provided by the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review.
