Here is that introductory quotation: I think, there is the need to enter that still room within us all where the past lives on as a part of the present, where the dead are alive again, where we are most alive ourselves to where our journeys have brought us. About the Author Lee Hartshorne Lybarger, born and raised in Lakewood, OH, has a B.A. from the College of Wooster, two master degrees (Case Western Reserve Univ. and University of Illinois). He did alternative service under the Draft (Selective Service System) in Puerto Rico; race relations work in Cleveland; was an urban community organizer for the Presbyterian Church in Pakistan (1962-1971), an economic development planner for the City of Cleveland and City of Trenton, N.J., and a family financial agent for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. He has been married to Connie J. Diller since 1962. They have three children in Chicago, Russellville, Ark., and Berkeley, CA., and have four grandchildren. He and Connie have lived in Delaware, OH since 1996. He acquired his interest in photography from his father, and writing from his mother.

A Gift to His Grandchildren By DW Lee Lybarger's memoir of his childhood is a reminder that we all have stories to tell which will intrigue our grandchildren and future generations. Most of us never write them down, and so our unique - as well as our typical - experiences are forever lost. How often I have pored through family photo albums and histories, yearning to know more about the people there preserved! From the bare bones of their significant dates and the sparse facts recorded, I have tried to imagine the real people, and wondered about their true lives.While I enjoyed the picture of wholesome childhood which Lybarger's account painted, without any resort to sentimental excess, I wanted more! He mentions the loss of his mother to cancer, but ends without telling about the impact of this deeply significant event in his young life. I hope that Lybarger will be inspired to continue telling his own story. From his bio, it is clear that he has often taken the road less traveled during the course of his un-ordinary life. He must have many more stories to tell about Puerto Rico, Pakistan, politics, and his own philosophies which led him to these life choices.His grandchildren will treasure this account of the remarkable life of the man who is their grandfather! Perhaps they, as I, will be drawn to the photo of the Lybarger family home on the cover, and long to fly back through time to join the family living there, to climb the stairs and peer out the attic windows, to play on the side porch on a rainy day, to hear the laughter of their great-grandmother.

Engrossing By Colleen Huckabee In this memoir, Lybarger takes a matter of fact look at his boyhood family and the town in which he was raised (1939-1952.) That is not to say that youthful high spirits and hijinks are left out. The book is organized around the widening social circles he encountered as he matured. How his family dealt with racial prejudice in the supposedly halcyon days of the 50s and 60s is moving. For those who lived then and for those who wish to know more about comfortable family life in that era, this is an engrossing read. What I like best about this book is Lybarger's linkage of childhood incidents to his current thoughts and engagements.Colleen Huckabee
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An Earnest Romp through Childhood and Those Teenage Years By Susan B. Hendrickson A tender reminiscence that brought back memories... I hadn't thought of some of the songs like "Good Night Irene, Good Night" for years! Lee takes us through those times that were beginning to be contentious in our society. Hearing the Weaver's song, and the despicable incident of flagrant prejudice on the shore of Lake Erie paralleled events in my young years. Further reading brings much more to light. I feel that we get a balanced report in this book and that it will be a meaningful read for others.
