A painfully honest, funny and at times poignant account of the author’s rocky road to early adulthood and his efforts to reconcile within himself the conflicting influences of his good-humored mother and moody father. His journey through romantic misadventures, the turmoil of the ’60s, a comedy partnership, and the glimmers of a spiritual awakening is more than entertaining, conveying as it does the insight of hard-earned wisdom about life.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. intense love, and an ongoing search to find true meaning By Amazon Customer This book has captured my heart and imagination. I'm a huge fan of Frank McCourt (author of "Angela's Ashes", "'Tis", "Teacher Man") and this story as well as the style in which Zundel expresses himself leaves me with those similar feelings of suffering, confusion, guilt, intense love, and an ongoing search to find true meaning, connection with a greater power perhaps, and what the main character, as a unique individual, has to offer the world. From the often harsh reality of life at home to the conflicts with his father, he takes us on a journey (hello Jack Kerouac!) of discovery with colorful characters and a brilliant, somewhat cruel landscape that is freedom on the road. The pace of "Sunshine and Troubled Sea" is easy to get caught up in, his sentiment about life poignant and lyrical. The only reason I would give the book a four out of five stars is due to feeling a disconnect with the character and flow of the story at the point where the author returns home to see if he can further define his relationship with Dawn, a girl he has hopelessly fallen for but continues to send mixed signals. Without realizing it at the time, this lag in the progression of the story adds to the mood of the character and you ultimately sympathize. It picks up again just a couple chapters later when he closes that door. Even though he doesn't know what his next step in life will be, he realizes it's up to him to form a life for himself. Given a little space and time to re-establish friendships, he tries his hand at various jobs and in the process gains insight into other peoples' lives, later reflecting on his own.

I was happily surprised to be dead wrong about that. Certainly, this is a story about coming of age but it would be a mistake to assume that is all it is. Both endearing and baffling at different points along the ride, it's also a story of courage, fortitude, of finding faith and finding love. As the main character grows from childhood to early adulthood, the author takes us on a messy and complicated path to personal and family reparation. The end is a bit choppy as the character suddenly goes from his early 20s to being a grandfather, and I would have liked to have learned more about how that happened for him. But with a wickedly dry and self-deprecating wit, Zundel's story will cause you to cheer for his evolution, revisit your own youth, and leave celebrating the resiliency of the human spirit.

Salm I'm an American who grew up overseas and missed out on many of the counterculture 60s experiences, which form the counterpoint to this honest portrayal of one young man's inner odyssey during the 60s-70s. Nevertheless, this engaging book took me back to my teens–early twenties. We all have a story, but not all of us can write it as well as Alan Z who uses humor, sensitivity, and a professional counselor's objectivity to basically ask the question "Who am I?" His answer involves girls, Castaneda, silent movies, and learning not to take oneself too seriously. You'll like this book!

As a single mother, my book is to inspire you with God's Word, with his hope and faith and lots of peace and unconditional love he has for us. I pray and hope you take some courage and joy along your journey. Because you can make it with God's help. I was a victim and I am a survivor. After all my struggles, I kept my faith and asked God for more wisdom, some hope for tomorrow, and courage to make it in these struggles. Writing this book gave me purpose to provide a way to communicate my thoughts to single parents and children. I have worked long and hard to bring this story to light, and I could not have done it without God.

About the Author I am qualified to write this book because it's a true story about my life. So many people are hurting and giving up on life because of their problems. I want them to hear my story, and I pray it will change their life. My purpose is to encourage and help others along the way. I carried my pain for a very long time. It was time to release it and let others know I have been there, but because of God, I am still standing and following my dreams. I live in Ga and I am a mother of five amazing children who went through the struggle. But made it once again with God's help.

By Amelia Gremelspacher The Kampong Glam Palace in 1920's Singapore lives as the whimsical perverse holder of the family dreams for Agnes. At 17 she has appointed herself as the savior of the palace little knowing that every one else in her life has assumed this very role. The characters in her family are drawn in that loving fashion that sees flaws and idiosyncrasies clearly. I especially love Nei-Nei Down, the grandmother who lives o the ground floor who is known for a mysterious turtling noise and deeply held beliefs. Agnes herself is a willful , witty girl who is literate without much attention to education and charming in the back handed fashion of the deeply truthful. She is a citizen of Singapore as only a child of British, Chinese, and Singaporan descent might be. The prose is a satisfying blend of the vagaries of memory and the flamboyance of today.Singapore in 1920 is poised on the brink of global change as opposing forces of chinese vie for dominence and Japan seems to slumber across the sea. Money is booming, just not in the Palace. It is deeply fascinating meld of dozens of cultures that give it an ambience that flavors this book in an unforgettable sense. Upon finishing the book, I actually sought out the famous Singapore chicken rice recipe having been teased by its charms so vividly on the page I felt impelled to try it. The smells of this exotic city are described so faithfully, I was a bit taken aback to glance out to a quiet suburban world outside my window. In short, I loved this book, and I think that it makes a perfect foil to a rainy fall day.

By Chrsitina Beautiful story about a young woman and her unique (at least to those not Singaporean) little extended family living in a decrepit palace. Story is full of imagery, concise in history, and yet ends too soon. I would like very much to read another, more complete version of this story that tells us more about her family members history and the fate of the old palace.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Refreshing and spellbinding By B. Turrell An interesting look at old Singapore and the characters of the time. The characters take on very realistic personas and you end up feeling as if you actually know them. The old palace seems so real. A wonderful, warm story that will keep you interested throughout the book.

Free Ebook PDF Online Die kleine Rose: Eine Erzählung frei nach Antoine de Saint-Exupéry "Der kleine Prinz" (German Edition), by Simone Bondroit

Ten Shoes Up" Angus is an 1880s cowboy riding and hiding on Ten Shoes Up, a 10,000 foot mountain straddling the border between New Mexico and Colorado. With a slack rein, he rides straight-legged, always on the lookout. Angus doesn't talk much except to Tucson, his bay gelding. Men admire the way he sits a saddle, and women wonder if he's going to dismount. As he rides into a new town, any fool can see he’s well-armed, confident, and riding a fine horse. He’s often taken for a scout or a trapper, or an outlaw. Some say his coming down off "his" mountain was reluctant. Others say it's about time. Town folk still mull their all too human problems, but Angus depends on the horse he rides, the trails he follows, and the rivers he crosses. His code—Hold true to nature, hide your misery, stay out of sight. In his early twenties, Angus is on a mission and struggles to resolve issues he thought were buried with his young wife. His life bears little likeness to today’s frenetic culture. Still, what happens to him parallels choices made by many young people today. While the West is no longer wild, today's culture owes much of its footing to men like Angus. Angus and Tucson are the same story—the onrush of civilization and its fated codes that clash with deeply held beliefs.

Ten Shoes Up, by Gary L Stuart

About the Author Gary L Stuart I earned degrees in business and law at the University of Arizona, and practiced law in Phoenix Arizona for a long time. In the 1990s, I started writing long form, outside the office. Two text books later, I wanted more, which led to my first novel (“The Gallup 14”) in 2000. I grew up in Gallup New Mexico and always “hankered” to write a book about rural life in the southwest. My second novel, (“AIM For The Mayor—Echoes From Wounded Knee”), came along in 2008. Between those two novels, I wrote two large non-fiction books about famous legal cases (“Miranda—The Story of America’s Right to Remain Silent” and “Innocent Until Interrogated—The Story of the Buddhist Temple Massacre”). My latest non-fiction book (“Anatomy of A Confession—The Debra Milke Case”) will be released in late 2015. Once that trio of legal non-fiction books is up, I’m hoping to stick with fiction for the next decade. I teach creative writing to law students at Arizona State University. I write every day. My stack includes hundreds of short stories, articles, monologs, op-eds and blogs about writing and writers. I got back to my cowboy roots in the nineteen-eighties, which might explain why I’m now writing about life out west in the eighteen-eighties. Gallup, Tucson and Darlene are my horses; they’ve taught me a good deal about who I am over the last thirty years. Ten Shoes Up is the first of a three-book series set in the 1880s along the New Mexico Colorado border. My protagonist is an iconic 1880s cowboy. Mostly, he rides alone in the high country on the New Mexico- Colorado border looking for outlaws, in-laws, and trouble. It comes to him naturally. And often when he talks his horse into crossing a new river. These books can’t be booted down into the traditional western genre. They chronicle the challenges that young men and women faced at the turn of the 19th Century. From Angus’s point of view, as portrayed on my blog, not all that much has changed.

They know him as a serious, accomplished author and student of the criminal justice system. Books on Miranda, false confessions and ethics can always be found in law schools and law offices, but in my office you'll also find Ten Shoes Up (and reserved shelf space for the sequels). What opens as a 19th Century romp through the hard lands of Northern New Mexico and Colorado, opens a window into the history of railroads and lawlessness in the Southwest, and becomes a lesson in justice. I admired most, and will remember longest, the turning points in Stuart's book that I least expected. I suspect you will see what I mean.

Although it's not a genre I would normally read, I thought I'd give it a shot. At around 100 pages, I realized that I was enjoying the story. It put me in mind of the old westerns I watched on Saturday mornings before the cartoons came on. So I enjoyed the book. It's very well-written and the characters are so developed that I could picture them in my mind as I read. Those that really stood out were Angus, an undercover deputy marshal, Jack Strong, an old-time western thug, and Tom Emmett, a highly principled train robber. If you like westerns, you'll love this one.Carole McKee, Author

Hermes I purchased Ten Shoes Up because I have liked all of Gary Stuart's books that I have read so far, but I have to say that this one may be my favorite. I love Gary's style of oscillating between the first person view of the various main characters, and really enjoyed the mystery (especially in the first half of the book) of who Angus is and what is motivations are. I found myself having a hard time putting the book down, which is always the sign of a good book. Gary Stuart really made 1880's New Mexico/Colorado come alive. I am looking forward to reading more about these characters and time period from this author.

A mission failed... A civilization on the edge of collapse... A dangerous alliance to save it... Colonel Mitchell “Ares” Williams has never been one to accept failure. While the outcome on Liberty is a crushing setback to his and the Rigger’s chances of salvaging the war, there’s no time to waste on regret. After all, the mission wasn’t a total loss, delivering an unexpected asset in the wake of their defeat: Liun Tio, a.k.a the Knife, a notorious warlord and enemy of the Alliance, whose deep-seated mistrust of artificial intelligence and control over what may be the largest free fleet in the galaxy have made him the most important man alive. If humanity is going to have a chance to survive the Tetron onslaught, Ares and the Knife will need to find a way to work together. But can the two learn to trust one another enough to bring the power of their joint forces to bear against a common enemy? Or will their fragile alliance crumble beneath the weight of personal motives and divergent goals? As Mitchell and the Riggers will soon discover, the knife’s edge cuts both ways. ------ The Knife's Edge is the third book in the War Eternal series. A good story in search of a good editor By Takkom I would have liked to give this book 5 stars however the sheer volume of editing errors make giving it 4 stars a struggle. No doubt its a good story and adds to this series. The editing mistakes in this book are legion everything from calling a male captain a female no less than twice in one paragraph to sentences that just stop for no reason, starts and stops with the text as if there are chunks missing, calling a character by one name and then turning around and calling the same character by another name. Compound all of that with the number of typos and grammatical errors and loss of POV in several places and it makes for a hard read. If you manage to get over all the mistakes it is a good story and a sad ending. Michael will carry on with this war he has lost too many loved ones at this point to stop.

I think this series has gotten better with every book. I really like the characters, obviously Mitchell but I like the other characters for their contradictions. Whaft I mean by that is the Riggers are filled with murderers, rapists & more, yet these people show you different sides to them that are funny, sad, guilty, regretful, hopeful, respectful, loyal, brave and very courageous. I think these characters and what they bring to the story is what makes this so intriguing. We're rooting for them. We want them to succeed no matter how many times they lose, how many they lose, or how much they lose. The Tetrons are another unique element-- you never know who may be an actual Tetron and that's nerve racking. The hidden Tetron in this book is a definite surprise!I cannot wait for the next book! I cannot wait to see Mitchell come out fighting mad! Kicking butt and taking names!!! Woohoo!! Bring on book 4 ASAP!!!Editing: I had a lot of issues with editing problems at the beginning of the book. I read on a kindle. I tend to do grammatical corrections &/or suggestions for confusing concepts in sentences or paragraphs, etc. When I finish the book, I will then send those Notes to the author if he/she wants them &/or if I can get the info the them (sometimes it's not easy). I know that at one point I just said the heck with this and just read without the notion of correcting. It was very distracting and was taking away from my enjoyment of the book. Luckily, the worst of the editing blips was over anyway so no harm, no foul. As I've said I enjoyed this book despite those errors in the beginning. I gave the book 4 stars solely because of these errors. Otherwise it would have easily gained a 5 star rating. I don't understand these errors. In these days of free beta readers, I wouldn't expect the poorest, new to the writing world author to have these kind of errors. So, I'm speculating that this author is not taking advantage of this resource. I think he should rethink this. If he has beta readers and these errors are still filtering through then I suggest he recruits new beta readers or invest in an efficient editor. Reader age group: 17+. Book cover: it's ok. It's your typical space ship, so I find it boring. The colors are bright which is eye catching. The other issue I would bring to the table is the fact that there's nothing that ties the books together as a series. I always find this to be disappointing and frankly, I would guess this would be a missed marketing opportunity. I know fir me personally, I like to be able to identify a book as a series. Anyway, I really like the series and I'm excited for book 4.Sent from my iPhone

Each page you read just pulls you deeper into the story like you are one of the configurations. I am not one to give a synopsis of a book, but this book is extremely well written with only a few editing mistakes. The characters we meet are well developed, but not all are who we think they are. The only way to find out who is who is to read this book. Prepare yourself, because at the end, you are going to want more!

Spring Break seems like an advantageous time for Edith to take a road trip with three of her grandchildren. They're going to visit her grandparent's home that has been recently refurbished as a country get-a-way. Coverage for the kids' electronic devices will be unavailable on the hundred acre property and she envisions a tranquil and beneficial visit. She is praying that she, and the trip, will be a positive influence, especially on Ginny, her granddaughter who is demonstrating some disturbing behaviors that seem to be a reaction to her parents' divorce. Edith starts receiving warning signs on the afternoon they are to leave, but she feels they make no sense, therefore, she manages to come up with an explanation for each incident. As the trip continues the messages become more intense, as her past and present collide in a terrifying manner that puts them all in danger. Attempts to undo the damaging results of rationalizing the warnings are met with physical and spiritual battles.

Great read, really enjoyed this adventure and the characters By Cynthia Great read, really enjoyed this adventure and the characters, especially Edith. Can't really place this story in a certain genre, (might be part of what I liked about it). I love that this story could appeal to any age group, (with the exception of very young readers, a little scary), so I can share the experience of this story, and the book, with my older and younger relatives and friends. Looking forward to the next book from this author.

This volume is an introduction to the practice keeping a reading notebook, sometimes referred to as a commonplace book. Most readers do not keep a record of the memorable passages they come upon in the books they read. However, there is much to be gained by doing so. A Commonplace Book Primer is designed to illustrate these benefits and the value it can have for readers all forms of literature.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A very nice introduction to what has become a rather obscure subject By Michael K. Smith When I was a developing book-nerd in high school some fifty years ago, I rather self-consciously began writing down brief extracts from the books I read, the thoughts or observations that really got to me. I eventually got too busy with Real Life to keep it up, but when I came into possession of my own computer c.1980, I started keeping notes again. By that time, I recognized that the practice had a long history and that many people of a reflective and intellectual bent have maintained notebooks of thoughts and quotes from their reading -- almost hand-written, it's part of the psychological process -- and that the result is known as a "commonplace" book. (The OED defines "commonplaces" as "passages important for later reference.") Nowadays, largely because of my library background, I tend to write whole reviews of what I read, but I still maintain a number of topical text files of quotes and excerpts. As the definition says, the urge to underline passages or to copy them out enables you to return to them later, to think again about what they say and how and why they made an impression on you. It leads one to a deeper form of reading and aids one's fleeting memory. It may even lead to a deeper understanding of oneself. Some people jot down something every month or two, some copy out large masses of material from almost every book. And people have been doing this since Aristotle, who recommended the practice. Thomas Jefferson did it, and W. H. Auden, and Erasmus, and E. M. Forster, and Emerson, and Milton, and Charles Curtis. And, of course, quite a few ordinary, thoughtful readers.Katzev goes into the tradition and practice of keeping a commonplace book, gives many examples from many types, and reports the results of an informal survey on purpose and methodology that he conducted by mail (he's a psychologist by profession so that was almost inevitable). Then he explores the more recent phenomenon of commonplace books (or their equivalent) on the Web, as well as the practice of categorization by subject -- or not, because some note-takers strongly resist the idea. It's an intriguing and thought-provoking (and quite short) book that might encourage you to buy a nice Moleskin and a good fountain pen and start recording thoughts from your own reading. And the author didn't start his book until he was in his fifties, so it's never too late to start. I'm forced to add, however, that even though the author decided to self-publish this small work, he would have benefitted from a third-party copyedit.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a smart contribution By manthasam An important piece in contemporary understanding and use for the Renaissance tradition of the commonplace book, Katzev's literary experiment expresses genuine interest in and appreciation for maintaining a commonplace book today. Many of the most accessible resources for contemporary commonplacing are included, but the majority of the analysis looks only at Katzev's personal commonplacing experiences as evidence. Overall, this is an in-depth look at one man's experience with reading and recording notable passages that ultimately reveals an honest hope for reviving the Renaissance ideal. It could, however, gain more credibility and much improvement with some proofreading.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but like other reviewers said By KJones It was an ok book, but like other reviewers said, needs an editor. It hasn't been too inspirational to me, it focuses on the idea of "how lovely it is to keep such a book" and not much practical advice.

Review

  • "THE MOTHER OF GOD VISITS HELL by Daniel Guyton... is tightly structured with an amazing premise... The story captivates you, it has a premise that is delectable to the nth degree..." (What the Butler Saw theatre website, 2009)
  • "THE MOTHER OF GOD VISITS HELL has my strongest recommendation. It holds out the hope that American playwrights will move above realism. What's more, Mr. Guyton's talents as a poet and a dramatist are stellar, and the script is a model for other dramatists." (Steve Capra, The Living Theatre in NYC, 2009)
  • "THE MOTHER OF GOD VISITS HELL... was absolutely terrific! Daniel's wonderful writing provides a Shakespearean poetry and characters that are totally engaging! The event, at the Academy Theatre in Atlanta, was sponsored by Working Title Playwrights. Daniel's got a real winner with this play and I hope to see it on the stage!" (Bill Gibson, Working Title Playwrights, 2012)
  • "With an opening sequence that begins in Heaven and encompasses a mother-son argument of philosophical magnitude between two spiritually and Biblically iconic beings, the elevated language... is quite justified - and effective. It's a tale of a journey from home in the vein of Hesse's "Siddhartha," but with a more philanthropic aim for the titular Mary... Mr. Guyton's gift for lush language is a gem for any reader, and it demands as many live readings as possible. (Sean Polite, Town & Gown Players, 2012)
  • "Quite fantastic! I like the way, in iambic pentameter, you had so many rhymes within the middle of the lines... I thought [it] was remarkable. I especially liked the characters of Mary and Satan... I am so impressed by this piece of work, which might be called 'religious' or 'epic' or 'poetic'... It tells a simple story of Mary getting people out of Hell into Heaven, but in such a poetic and complex and delightful way. The additional characters (like the Cobbler) work excellently as well." (Martha Patterson, playwright, 2015)
  • "This play manages to take what appears, on first examination, to be an absurd premise, and uses it to explore profoundly serious issues. At the same time, it manages to not only be entertaining but also an excellent literary work." (Official Feedback from the Helen-Jean Award Committee, 2015)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heavenly Recommendation! By sp1 I'm happy to say that I was cast for the "lead Diety" role in the first Mother of God Visits Hell stage production. It was a magic experience that has opened many doors (including a tentative radio play negotiation) for all performers involved. However, it all began with the strength and solidarity of this writing by Mr. Guyton. With an opening sequence that begins in Heaven and encompasses a mother-son argument of philosophical magnitude between two spiritually and Biblically iconic beings, the elevated language that Dan uses is quite justified---and effective. It's a tale of a journey from home in the vein of Hesse's "Siddhartha," but with a more philanthropic aim for the titular Mary. Combine a noble aim with the classic cunning ways of what we know as Satan/Lucifer/The Devil, and you have a great tale of sour consequences for sweet intentions. Arguments, bias, struggle, redemption---we've all known the first 3 things, and hope for the last.No characters are wasted in Mr. Guyton's writing, as the natural and supernatural display a poise, presence, or the occasional proverb on living (and dying) in a world encumbered in sin, the family you're born with (and ultimately depart), and the power of change (as well as the belief in making it happen).Forgive any non-clarity I've made here (as the Character I play would), and trust me that Mr. Guyton's gift for lush language is a gem for any reader, and it demands as many live readings as possible. For the actor or actress reading this, the multi-regional palate (see the Cobbler/Cobbler's Wife) invite a rich dialect study and is at the same time a great gateway to the periodic brilliance of epic/dramatic theatre (i.e. Shakespeare). It's a study in comic timing with it demanding one's sharpening of vebal delivery on the iambic pantameter so as to find the laughs (and sighs) that Dan's poetic dialogue (and yen for monologue) offers. All in all, it "sounds" good to the ear.As high-falutin' as it may sound, Dan Guyton has crafted a fine fable within Heaven, Hell, and Earth with the proper mix of action, musing, and emotion to win over your attention. I highly recommend it, and am looking forward to helming my role for a 3rd time for an upcoming live reading.Best Wishes, and may you enjoy this tale as much as I have!Sean P. (Role of God in 2009 Town & Gown "Mother of God" Production, WUGA 91.7 FM Radio Play, 2012 No Shame Reading Series Production)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Finally, something happens on stage.... By Peter Marino I go to lots of plays, and while they are earnestly artsy, they are usually so boring I feel like time has stopped. This play is all the things I value in a good play: it's full of onstage action, it's brainy, and it wrestles with moral issues. I can't wait to see it performed.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An actor's view. By L. Scott I was fortunate enought to be an actor performing one of Daniel's plays in a reading in NYC. His plays are witty, alittle off-center and always entertaining. He is a wonderful playwright and an audience favorite.-Lorenzo Scott-actor.

Goodreads Review Four Stars: "Impressive descriptions and characters... the tinge of romantic fervour breathing freshness into a city burdened with the fear of a dragon's deadly breath." -Amazon Review DESCRIPTION: As the Iron Horse journeys ever deeper into its mysterious post-apocalyptic world, the crew encounters a lone knight on a quest to slay a dragon. They mock him at first, but when they arrive at the fog-shrouded city known as Stormwatch, the streets are abandoned, the doors are locked, and the citizens are terrified to leave their homes. One old woman, alone and seemingly insane, confronts the crew with this ominous warning: "Beware the dragon's breath!" They hear the knight's words echoed in her statement, and begin to realize that things may not be as they appear. Then, as night closes in, strange things begin to happen aboard the Iron Horse. Crew members are attacked by invisible beings and strange, mutated creatures. One by one, they begin to vanish. When it seems things can't get any worse, they realize their adventure has only just begun... and that maybe, just maybe, dragons really do exist.

If they don’t find Starfall in the next town they may be stranded. There may be starfall in that town, but there is something else no one expected to find, a mysterious fog that causes terrible hallucinations that the residents deem “Dragon’s Breath.”. All the Iron Horse crew members experience the effect, save Socrates. Can they figure out where it comes from to prevent it among their crew? And what about the residents of Stormwall, how do they combat it? Most importantly, will they find fuel to continue on their quest or be stranded in a strange kingdom?Book three in the Aboard the Great Iron Horse series is jam packed with sword fights, relationship drama, dragon fighting, and intrigue, all in a post-apocalyptic setting with a steam punk twist. While it is book three of a series, I felt that the story stood well on its own, even if you had not read the previous two books (although of course I suggest you do.) The characters gave enough natural plot exposition without being obnoxious and were well written to the point where you engaged immediately. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series as well!

The Iron Horse, whose crew is in search of the precious element, Starfall, are about to find out for themselves. Their train arrives Stormwatch, a crude but civilised city in the middle of nowhere, and they're greeted by a population scared of the dark, and the Dragon's breath. Fairy tale story, they call what they hear, until crew members begin to face a strange danger in the dark, aboard the Iron Horse! Commander Socrates, a mechanised gorilla, along with River, his female engineer, and some brilliant and hard-working members of his crew, must help the people of Stormwatch fight their fear and end the reign of terror a behemoth creature has unleashed on their city. Now this is what I call imagination at its best. The plotline, though not an unusual one, has the weird merging of automation and medieval themes to thank for its success. Impressive descriptions and characters fill this story, with the tinge of romantic fervour breathing freshness into a city burdened with the fear of a dragon's deadly breath.I also found succour in the warmth and decisiveness of some of the story's characters, like Engineer River, Micah, Kale, King Dane and Socrates, the wise ape with a befitting name. Now Burk and the baron mark the extreme opposite of these endearing personalities, but Lord Fen's daughter, Morgane, show us in the end that some good can always emerge from the bad.The book cover is a good one, and the interior format is nice. It opened up on my Coffee Reader without hassle. And though I saw some typos in the text, this observation didn't prevent my noting that the exciting 'bonecrushing' adventure I undertook with the crew of the Iron Horse in Author Sedgwick's THE DRAGON'S BREATH was worth every minute I spent flipping through the book's pages.

In The Dragons breath Jamie Sedgewick gives us the third book in the Aboard the Great Iron Horse series. In fact if the characters sound familiar it would be due to this being an offshoot of his previously published The Tinkerers Daughter series. While having the first series is a plus it isnt needed to enjoy this one. That being said I would absolutely read the first 2 Aboard the Great Iron Horse novels prior to cracking this one open.Once again we are on a quest with the crew of the Iron Horse. The clockwork ape Socrates is still captaining his crew only this time they stumble across the strangest adventure yet. They meet a lone knight in this post apocalyptic world that our adventurers are in who is on a quest to slay a dragon. Not a creature that anyone believes in things soon change as the crew members start to disappear and they have to find a way to stop this menace before its too late.A well written piece of work though I still have to say that the first book in this series was the best. If you've been enjoying it so far there is no reason to stop now on continuing visiting Sedgewicks world!Disclaimer: I did receive a digital copy of the novel for free in exchange for my honest opinion.

The meticulous crafting of the words, the descriptions, the crispness of the writing, the pain, the suffering of differences where not everyone celebrates differences. Rembering Lasts So Long By Sparkle I read and re read this book because it spoke to me as such a poignant story of love ...not simply gay love but the complexity of any relationship heterosexual or gay. This author does a spectacular job describing the personal difficulties the two people have with family and even other in accepting who they are and the rightt to express it. This book delves into family acceptance no matter who you are! Marvelous work by a gifted new author. Family is everything and we could all learn a great deal about it from this book. Can't wait to read more from this author

By Cindy Davis Remembering... is a riveting story of love, betrayal, and perseverance through the most adverse emotional conditions. It's a journey toward mental peace over obstacles that everyone whether gay or straight will remember for a very long time. I was involved in this story from concept to completion and I've rarely seen one come together as well as this. Congrats to the author for hanging in on this one--it's sooo worth it!

Create robust and maintainable Java applications using the functional style of programming

About This Book

  • Explore how you can blend object-oriented and functional programming styles in Java
  • Use lambda expressions to write flexible and succinct code
  • A tutorial that strengthens your fundamentals in functional programming techniques to enhance your applications

Who This Book Is For

If you are a Java developer with object-oriented experience and want to use a functional programming approach in your applications, then this book is for you. All you need to get started is familiarity with basic Java object-oriented programming concepts.

What You Will Learn

  • Use lambda expressions to simplyfy code
  • Use function composition to achieve code fluency
  • Apply streams to simply implementations and achieve parallelism
  • Incorporate recursion to support an application's functionality
  • Provide more robust implementations using Optionals
  • Implement design patterns with less code
  • Refactor object-oriented code to create a functional solution
  • Use debugging and testing techniques specific to functional programs

In Detail

Functional programming is an increasingly popular technology that allows you to simplify many tasks that are often cumbersome and awkward using an object-oriented approach. It is important to understand this approach and know how and when to apply it. Functional programming requires a different mindset, but once mastered it can be very rewarding.

This book simplifies the learning process as a problem is described followed by its implementation using an object-oriented approach and then a solution is provided using appropriate functional programming techniques.

Writing succinct and maintainable code is facilitated by many functional programming techniques including lambda expressions and streams. In this book, you will see numerous examples of how these techniques can be applied starting with an introduction to lambda expressions. Next, you will see how they can replace older approaches and be combined to achieve surprisingly elegant solutions to problems.

This is followed by the investigation of related concepts such as the Optional class and monads, which offer an additional approach to handle problems. Design patterns have been instrumental in solving common problems. You will learn how these are enhanced with functional techniques.

To transition from an object-oriented approach to a functional one, it is useful to have IDE support. IDE tools to refactor, debug, and test functional programs are demonstrated through the chapters. The end of the book brings together many of these functional programming techniques to create a more comprehensive application. You will find this book a very useful resource to learn and apply functional programming techniques in Java.

Style and approach

In this tutorial, each chapter starts with an introduction to the terms and concepts covered in that chapter. It quickly progresses to contrast an object-oriented approach with a functional approach using numerous code examples.

Lots of useful information but also lots of typos By Waldorf I've been reading the Safari Online version of this book and it contains a lot of useful information. I would have given the book 4 stars but for the fact that the book has many, many typos, which is not good for a technical book. There are minor mistakes like misspellings and not matching the plurality of subjects and verbs, but there are also more important mistakes, such as errors in the code examples in the book and in the specifications of classes and interfaces. For example, in Chapter 2, where functional interfaces are discussed, the book says that the functional method in the BinaryOperator interface has return type R, when it should have said T. Similarly, the book says that the getAsInt( ) method in the IntSupplier interface has return type R, when it should have said int. This book was not sufficiently proofread before publication.
