About the Author Susan Harrison McMichael was born and raised in Arizona. She has worn various career hats – English teacher, librarian, business owner, paralegal, and resume writer. For over thirty years she worked in the family store, the office supply store that forms the setting for this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. some poor, some wealthy By A L Heindl Those who recall the 1960s and 70s, when family-run businesses were yet commonplace and the onslaught of mega-malls and corporate chain stores was still in its infancy, will find an immediate connection with the stories contained in Susan McMichael's 'The Family Store'. Through Ms. McMichael's reminisces we meet an array of small town characters and customers connected primarily by their need of the various items that helped people communicate before the age of social media. Simultaneously, we are reminded of other elements of pre-computer times, when orders and receipts were hand written, physically spindled and later hand-filed. It was a different America.Ms. McMichael's stories allow and encourage the reader to glimpse behind the scenes, both in terms of appreciating the day-to-day demands of running a family business, as well as recognizing the various motivations bringing customers into the store. Through her eyes we meet an assortment of humanity, some poor, some wealthy, some kind and some with ulterior designs. Her vignettes are sharply and concisely drawn, and run the gamut from humorous to poignant.Following on the heels of 'Box 7, Black Canyon Stage Route', her first collection, Ms. McMichael eloquently describes a time many of us knew, and some of us still miss.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A great read By Suz This is Susan's second book that I have read. It is delightful, too:) If you have lived in or love small towns, this is for you. It has wonderful characters & people that you can recall that might have lived in your hometown, in other words, characters. This book is also a good example of the changes in this country and how we do business. I have a friend who used to shop in Chandler Stationers and she loved it! She said that it is true, you could find everything there that you wanted. It also reminds us of the individual personal care for customers and making them feel appreciated and working hard to keep their business, sadly often missing today. If you want to relax, chuckle and enjoy a good read, get this book! after you are done with it, get Susan's first book, .... I don't know how to change this font, sorry ...Box7, Black Canyon Stage Route. It is marvelous and hilarious:)

By VALERIE TOWNSEND THE FAMILY STORE IS A WONDERFUL FUN AND DELIGHTFUL AND REALLY HILARIOUS READ BOOK. A BIT OF SADNESS ALSO BUT MOST OF ITS STORIES ARE HILARIOUS. IT MADE REMEMBER OUR OWN FAMILY HALLMARK STORE IN ALBANY, INDIANA WHICH MY PARENTS AND I OWNED AND RAN IN ALBANY, INDIANA FOR OVER TEN YEARS HOWEVER UNLIKE SUSANS PARENTS OUR HALLMARK STORE IN ALBANY, DIDN'T DO AS WELL AS HER FAMILIES STORE DID, BUT THIS BOOK IS GREAT I JUST LOVED IT. I HAVE ORDERED HER FIRST BOOK ALSO CAN'T TO READ IT EITHER. IT WILL BE HERE NEXT WEEK. I AM SO GLAD I FINALLY BOUGHT IT I JUST LOVED IT I HOPE SHEV WRITE S ANOTHER HILARIOUS BOOK NOW SOON SHE GREAT AND SO ARE ALL THE FUNNY DRAWINGS. IN, THE BOOK. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT.
