As mayor of La Paz, Bolivia, Lupe Andrade experienced this first hand when she uncovered corruption, blew the whistle, found herself accused of corruption and was thrown in jail—the women’s prison of La Paz, a mere three blocks from her home. She tells the story in Jailhouse Blues, a combination of journal entries written during her time in jail and retrospective reflections. It is a gripping commentary on her own experience, on that of her family and supportive friends, on the lives of other women in the jail and their children, and on life itself. In 2012, after a long separation, I visited Lupe, a friend since High School. She had many stories to tell including the story of Jailhouse Blues. At the end of my stay, I felt as though I had spent time with Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Macondo, but I knew that the story was not magical realism, it was unadulterated realism. Now that it is in print, I can affirm that It is a story that deserved to be published and deserves to be read.

Chumacero A charming, funny, sad, and epic tale of the journey of the author in a Bolivian jail.I was waiting for a nightmare similar to that of a Turkish prison (as portrayed in “Midnight Express”), but I found something different in this book.Without an explicit description of what happened outside jail, the author provides hints of the true nightmare that characterizes the political and judicial system in Bolivia. As terrible as it is, what happens in jail is (incredibly) more honest, straightforward, and predictable than what happens outside.I was deeply moved by the book.

By adrian Jailhouse Blues is an amazing book, composed of a mix of passionately written memoirs written during the authors’ stay in a women’s prison in La Paz with a more sober commentary written years later. The result is very powerful on many aspects. On one hand, it paints a very vivid image of the legal and penal system in Bolivia, images that are at times heart wrenching and at other times surreal. If you forget for a moment that these are actual descriptions of the author’s travails, you couldn’t be faulted for thinking that you are reading another product of South America’s magic realism literature.I also found the book fascinating on another level. The back-and-forth between the memoirs written during the incarceration of Ms. Andrade and the recollections written years later become a very lucid account of how memories work their way back from our past to the actual moment, and in doing so, how they shape the way we look at ourselves.
