There's an interesting transition from the initial literary efforts, which are the fulsome prose of a bygone age, through tough-talking noir of the '30s and '40s, to the brisk twists of the postwar era. As a reviewer elsewhere put it, you don't want to try to gnaw through all of them at a sitting.THE WINDOW OF HORRORS, by H.L. MenckenDisappointing, especially that it's by Mencken. A bevy of beauties apply to work as mannequins for a boutique famous for its display windows. Predictable and poorly-structured.THE FOOTSTEPS ON THE STAIRS, by William J. WintleA strangely pointless mystery that apparently has no solution? A clever fence has his operation set up to alert him to trouble, but a series of mysterious alerts wearies his wariness.THE RÔLE OF THE WEIRD, by Tom WorthThis strangely pointless mystery has TWO solutions, as a group of young diplomats accept a challenge to spend the night in a Malaysian house reputed to be haunted.THE HAUNTED BURGLAR, by W.C. After a man dies, his sister and her fiance are offered the chance to get him back from the dead - if they will pay the price.BAT MAN, by Victor RousseauNot really terrible, but made predictable by being too long. Wounded, a vampire-like man flits by night into the bedrooms of strange women, seeking his beloved.DOUBLE IN DEATH, by Gerald VanceA schizophrenic who doesn't understand psychology as well as the author tries to commit the perfect crime and free himself from guilt.CYANIDE AND OLD LACE, by Emil PetajaNot to be confused with ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, this fast-talking fist-slinging plot-twister is fairly good.THE HOUSE OF FIRE, by Robert Moore WilliamsUnearthly fires keep bursting out in an abandoned house near a government TNT plant, but luckily g-man Steve Flint is fishing nearby. Unluckily someone - or thing - is also casting a wide net.THE MAN WHO LOST HIS HEAD, by Thomas BurkeA man sick of being himself finds life TOO interesting when his face gets switched with that of an Interesting Man. Reminiscent of certain Edwardian stories in another Megapack, but stops just when it gets interesting!DEATH’S BRIGHT HALO, by Robert Leslie BellemIt's spicy thrills when a fast-talking gumshoe winds up on the tough side of tinseltown after an almond-eyed dame, not wearing a cockeyed thing, literally loses her head before he can leap from the running-boards of his jalopy.FINISHED BY HAND, by H.B. HickeyAn OK spin off THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS (the story appeared the same year as the movie.)
