By LB Johnson How does a young woman from the United States end up in Santiago with pizza in her oven and the echo of children's laughter in her heart? This delightful tale will tell you. From the author's move to Chili we learned, with charm and wit, how foreign a place could be. No central heat. Dryer sheets an unknown entity. We also find out how very real it is, with people who share many of the same things we do - a love of food, of laughter, of learning, and how cake can really be your dinner if you choose. Sally Rose describes the children she teachers with an honest appreciation for all of them even as she describes the classroom one day as a "wrestling match minus the costumes". Chili is a place I'd never imagined visiting, but through her words, I feel as if I was there with her, which is a heart and soul of what a good memoir is.

Many books about time spent in a foreign country are obviously written by tourists (people who remain within invisible bubbles of their own culture) or visitors with hidden agendas (such as selling real estate). This book reveals people in Chile to be as real and honest as Sally Rose herself seems to be. The writing is unpretentious and sincere--intimate glimpses into the experience that include issues with the nonprofit agency and its policies and moments of typical personal fallibility such as the kitchen fire. We seemed to pop in and out of the country really fast (perhaps Rose could've described the interim experiences in more detail), but short visits may have been the reality. Overall, I have never read another account of time spent in another culture that satisfied my curiosity better.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A charming and inspiring book By lsu1975 A Million Sticky Kisses is such a delightful book! It places the reader right alongside these children and their Gringa teacher. The book is well-written and keeps the reader interested in the day-to-day life of an adventurous writer who is privileged to fulfill her dream. Though some days are filled with struggles dealing with culture and language differences, her perseverance is evident as she learns to love and be loved by the students and all those she encounters. The joy of making a difference in the student's lives far outweighs the struggles of living in a foreign country. A Million Sticky Kisses is a great read by a very talented author!
