When Lee Anderson and her parents had discovered a new world teeming with life, it had been the dream of every explorer: they were rich beyond their imaginations. But tragedy had struck when a herd of creatures overran their camp and killed her parents. The only other adult in her life had been their partner Gordon, who adopted her as parent. Which didn’t turn out to be easy, because he wasn’t human. He was a large intelligent alien and to Lee he was Uncle Gordon, but neither his race – the Derf – nor Humans were gracious about accepting their family relationship. After various misadventures and strife they made others accept it, and also found that while they might not share blood, they both had exploring in the blood. Unhappy in civilization they decided to explore again – going really deep this time, far beyond established frontiers. They’d met other alien civilizations, made claim to new sources of wealth that rivaled their previous claims in value, and then headed home to present their new claims on Earth. But a lot of things didn’t make sense. Warnings came from their Fargoer allies that not everything on Earth was as it seemed to be. This is the story of their return voyage, and the unexpected mysteries in what they had left behind.

By evmick Secrets in the Stars.Book 3 of the Family Law Series. If you haven’t read any of Mackey’s stuff and you like BELIEVABLE science fiction then you are in for a treat. You’ve hit the mother lode. The science...the tech. is either real or will be soon. Even such dreary stuff as poly-ticks and economics is right on. If you have read his stuff you know this. If you have not then this is what you do.Read the April Series first...THEN read Family Law.Oh sure...Secrets in the Stars...It’s ok...more than ok...as a stand alone. Great even. Better than 90% of the stuff currently out there..but for best results...read the whole series….start at the beginning...fill in the middle...and work to the end.Simple.?thumbnail.People go places and do things. They have problems..they solve those problems. Little minor details like...a herd of carnivorous dinosaurs...are merely bumps in the road. The heroine of the series is little girl raised by a six legged one ton carnivore?Other than that I’m not handing out spoilers.Suffice to say... I read it...then I immediatly settled down to re read it…I could savor the good parts that way.Recommended..

Lee (teenage human) and Gordon (middle-aged derf) have more adventures with their Little Fleet and return from Deep Space to Derfhome and Earth to upset the status quo. Although quite serious, there are lighter moments when outsiders to society view things taken for granted by others. I admit to giggles at a couple of points, although my reaction to Lee's possible romance was mixed. 117 years is quite an age gap.The author has chosen to merge this series with his April series with this book. That is not a real problem since the Family Law series is set at least a century later. It was handled okay, but was not a major thrill.Errors were present, but except for a couple of places (Far Away and Fargone mixups) didn't disturb me too much. Although, I did find more while rereading it. There is also a plot issue with the cruiser Murphy's Law. I am afraid the fans rushed the publication a little too much. I really like this series and recommend that newcomers start with Family Law. Great!!

Now, how will they handle it." This idea was once presented to me as a means to write interesting stories, stories designed to get people coming back to them. I'm glad to see others heard that bit of advice as well.Secrets In The Stars is Mackey Chandler's third Family Law book. I'm glad he prefigured there will be a fourth; I'll want to read it.Secrets is the continuing development of a young, precocious and highly intelligent girl. Aside from an occasional but of swearing, I recommend it for juvenile reading; it's also highly entertaining for adult readers. The story deals with living and working in space, and interacting with space-going polities. Space is always uncertain; hence the unpredictable rating applied to this. The story itself is what I've come to expect from Mackey Chandler: A well-crafted story with intrigue, adventure, exploration and human (and not so human!) foibles.I give it 4 stars only because my recent Kindle purchases seem to have glitches that occasionally drop words and sentences. Having to reconstruct what is missing drops me out of story mind, and I have to work to get back in. It's like stepping on a bottom step that isn't there; it's that jarring. I'm not assigning blame to anyone, but it's an issue.Reading this on a stormy day with a teapot and several selections handy was very enjoyable. I had the time to steep in the story, and it tasted delightful.
