11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. brilliant political bio, from WWI to WWII By Robert J. Crawford This is an amazing and succinct autobiography by a little-known German writer. Horrified as a participant in the Great War, he became a communist revolutionary in Bavaria and while imprisoned wrote a number of well-received political plays. His writing style is beautiful and wonderfully vivid, yet clipped. The German is fairly easy, with plenty of dialect thrown in.The reader can really get a sense of the age of belief in ideologies as overarching solutions to complex historical problems. But there are also great characters in this, ranging from Max Weber railing at the need for democracy during WWI and various leftist leaders to the hilarious criminals Toller met in jail. It is extraordinarily vivid and economical in expression.Recommended warmly for anyone who loves history. I do not know if it has been translated.

Rosemarie, I will add that there is absolutely no reason for this book to be out of print in English. It's even difficult to find in German. I bought the paperback edition from Amazon.de and found the tiny print impossible for these old eyes to read. Finding it on Amazon.com, for free even, was a wonderful surprise. No doubt because Herr Toller was a playwright used to precise and poetic word choices, the German reads easily, unlike some of the turgid novels of that period. Highly recommended.

Toller's Youth in Germany By Rosemarie Ernst Toller, German dramatist, volunteer in 1914, was profoundly transformed by the war experience, both politically and socially. He was imprisoned for his part in the 1919 Bavarian 'Raeterrepublik'. 'Eine Jugend in Deutschland', 1933 (translated into English 'I was a German') is his biography, detailing the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic, Hitler's rise to power and his experiences. I acquired the book after reading Anna Funder's 'All that I am', although a novel, it is based on Toller's life and actions. I would recommend 'Eine Jugend in Deutschland' to anybody interested in German history of that era.
