Nora Malone has waited eight months for her fiancé, Ryan Walsh, to return from his second deployment to Afghanistan. When she meets him at the bus station after his discharge from the army, he looks the same as he did before, and he has no visible wounds. But soon she notices symptoms of a problem: he has frequent nightmares from which he wakes up screaming, he is easily startled, and he has trouble focusing on tasks. Her mother, who has agreed to let Ryan stay with them while he looks for a job and finds an apartment, also notices these symptoms and thinks Ryan needs medical attention. Ryan insists there is nothing wrong with him, citing the authority of the doctor who examined him before his discharge and said he was in perfect health. Nora wants to believe him, but when her mother accidently startles him and he reacts like he s still in combat, attacking her, Ryan can no longer deny that there is a problem. Nora, who has spent the past three years dealing with the acrimonious separation of her parents, now has to deal with her fiancé s invisible wound.

A Gripping Indictment By Barbara Benjamin Once again, Tom Milton awakens the reader to an issue of social justice that most citizens and government officials prefer to ignore, an issue that reflects the limitations of our ability to fulfill Jesus' new commandment, "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (John 13:34). While most readers will be shocked by the careless, neglectful response of government agencies to the needs of our wounded warriors, combat veterans who have suffered PTSD will be delighted that Invisible Wounds gives voice to the frustrations and betrayal they feel when returning home, wounded from war, and seeking support to heal and begin a normal civilian life. This book is a gripping indictment of all the government-sponsored veterans programs, experienced through the struggles of Ryan Walsh, a returning veteran, his fiance, Nora, and their friends, Zoila and Greg. Beginning with the missed diagnosis of PTSD when he is discharged from service, followed by discouraging predictions about his being healed, Ryan finds himself baffled about his condition and reluctant to become a burden to Nora, the woman who is trying to help him. Nora, however, remains persistent and, although she is dealing with her own family crisis, she is determined to find out what happened to Ryan in the war and find ways to help him regain his equilibrium. While the consequences of war cannot be diminished for the individual combat veteran, and men and women die and are inevitably injured, the responsibility of a nation to its veterans cannot be minimized. Just how marginalized our veterans are and how minimized the government's responsibility has become is painfully clear in Invisible Wounds. The reader cannot read this book without being changed by it.

All the characters are well written and it brings to light the very serious subject of PTSD, not only how it effects the person who has it but family and friends. My only regret about this book is the abrupt ending. I would have liked to have seen it go a little further then it did. But other than that I really liked the book. I received this from LibraryThing Member Giveaway for an honest review.
