Lost and Missing Vol. 2, More True Stories of People Gone Missing and Never Found

Volume 2 is a continuation of the Murders, Mayhem and Scandals Series. As in Vol. 1, it contains stories of people who have disappeared without a trace and are still missing. These cases include stories of lost people going back to pre-AD times and continuing into the 21st century. From the noted gladiator Spartacus to the Carnegie heir Andrew Carnegie Whitfield and from Joan Gay Croft, the child who disappeared from the hospital after a tornado to Iraena Asher the New Zealand model who walked naked into the dark and was never seen again.

The book includes the following cases:

  • Spartacus, the legendary gladiator, 71 BC
  • The Princes in the Tower, Edward V of England and Richard of Shrewsbury, 1483
  • Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife Sarah Elizabeth, their daughter Sophia Matilda, and all seven crew members of the Mary Celeste, 1872
  • Bobby Dunbar, believed found but was he?, 1912
  • Bela Kiss, the Hungarian Serial Killer, 1916
  • Andrew Carnegie Whitfield, a member of one of the wealthiest American families, 1938
  • Joan Gay Croft, vanished during the aftermath of a tornado, 1947
  • Jean Spangler, went out for the night, never came back, 1949
  • Robin Graham, taken from a Hollywood Freeway, 1970
  • Kevin Andrew Collins, disappeared after basketball practice, 1984
  • The Springfield Three, three women mysteriously disappear, 1992
  • Richey Edwards, left his car near a bridge, 1995
  • Amy Lynn Bradley, another cruise ship mystery, 1998
  • Iraena Asher, a very preventable mystery, 2004
  • Lyle and Marie McCann, the couple on a road trip, 2010

These stories of missing people, while tragic, peak our interest in many ways. The mysteries, even ones from long ago, keep our curiosity and imaginations in high gear as we contemplate how these people vanished and why they were never found. Lost people, especially those who could still be alive, make for riveting reading. This new volume is sure to grab and hold your attention throughout.

I really enjoyed this new book from Mike Riley in the series Lost and Missing. I think it's even more interesting than the first one. The cases spread out from 71BC with the disappearance of Spartacus to 2010. The common tread for each case is that these people disappear and were lost forever. Nobody knows for sure what really happens. I like that the author describes each case with a detailed description of the circumstances of the disappearances, the day each person or group of people went missing, the detailed account of the investigation and the current situation. It is troubling to think that some people can just disappear without anyone knowing or noticing anything. There is no closure for the family. I really like the description of Riley's account of what might have happened for each case. It also fascinating to learn about the older cases as they are part of the history like Spartacus and Edward V. I really enjoyed to read about the mysterious case of the missing child, Bobby Dunbar with a really surprising twist 100 years later!Overall, the book is well written and researched. I highly recommend reading it to anyone interested in unsolved mysteries and true crime. All of Mike Riley's books I have read are fascinating true crime stories. Keep them coming, I can't wait for the next one.

I didn't know that Spartacus was never found. The Bobby Dunbar story sent chills up my spine since I'm a mom.I read the first Mike Riley book that someone gifted me and I've been hooked ever since, partly due to the well-written stories and partly because he does a terrific job describing the back story, the investigation and the current status of each case. And I love how Mike tells us what he thought might have happened to the missing persons. For those who love true mysteries, one with elements of horror, this book is definitely for you. For people like myself, who are frightened to death of everything bordering on horror but love history, this book is also a must read. 5 Stars to this author. Well done.

It is hard to believe that so many people can disappear without a trace, and that is what makes the cases so intriguing. This book covers missing persons cases from hundreds of years ago until modern times. Some of the stories I had already heard of (still interesting to read); others I had not. I like that this book does not simply focus on high-profile cases that have been rehashed by the media over and over again. The book is written well for the most part and interesting. The author not only tells the story of the disappearance but also some likely scenarios of what might have happened. The only thing I don't like about this book is that it is too condensed. The stories could have contained more content, but they're short. This book isn't a long book in which the stories were condensed in order to fit them all into the page limit; it's just condensed overall. The stories are short and there aren't a ton of them in this book, which means the book itself is a short read.
