From Publishers Weekly If you can believe that an 18th-century Scottish noblewoman is a master of ancient Chinese martial art, then nothing need prevent you from enjoying this well-crafted historical romance from Lamb (Betrayed). Second in the Clan MacKenzie Trilogy, this book focuses on Agnes, the eldest of Lachlan MacKenzie's three illegitimate daughters. In a reversal of all the romantic cliches of male derring-do, Agnes saves the life of the hero, Edward Napier. Warriorlike, she protects Napier and his two children from endless plots while staving him off with her sharp tongue. If it sags a bit in the middle, this witty book still offers a fresh twist for fans of Lamb's romances. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal When renowned bodyguard Agnes MacKenzie saves Edward Napier's life by jumping in front of an arrow meant for him, she ends up under his medical care, guarding him and his children from a relentless assassin. She is also in great danger of falling in love. A unique premise, a fearless heroine, and a persistent hero are complemented by lively dialog, beautifully managed sexual tension, and a batch of unusual secondary characters such as an elderly, knife-wielding aunt highlight this swift-moving, involving story, the second in Lamb's "Clan MacKenzie" trilogy (Betrayed, Pocket, 1995). Lamb is a popular writer of Highland historical romances, and her fans will be waiting for this.-KRCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Review The second tale of the MacKenzie girls revolves around Agnes, the brave and resourceful one that has traveled the world learning the art of self-defense and putting her skills to work for others. It comes natural, therefore, for Agnes to throw herself in the path of a speeding arrow to save the life of Edward Napier and his two children. Now, knowing that someone is trying to kill Edward, Agnes is determined to keep him and his children safe until she uncovers, and puts an end to, the assassin. But Agnes is deeply effected by the loss of her sister Virginia six years earlier, that she feels totally responsible for. As her search for her sister continues, Agnes feels it is her purpose in life to help save the lives of others like Edward. Agnes has always been able to turn away the romantic attentions of others, but somehow she feels differently in the presence of Edward Napier. Edward is determined to break through the protective wall Agnes has placed around herself...and assures her that she can continue her search for Virginia and still allow herself to love. First, however, they must discover who is trying to kill Edward, and what he could possess that someone would want badly enough to kill for. The story of the MacKenzie's began with Highland Rogue, which is the story of Lachlan MacKenzie and Juliet, and Lachlan's four six-year-old daughters. Now the daughters are grown and Arnette is delighting her readers with their stories. Betrayed is the first in the series, the story of Sarah, the fair one with a penchant for books and learning. Beguiled is the second story and leads wonderfully into the tales of others. One page and you'll be hooked on Arnette Lamb, her characters, and her style! I was intrigued on page one, and desperate for more at the end! Arnette is a master at addicting her readers! More! More!Diane Potwin -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. Tucker Agnes Mackenzie, haunted by a mistake that led to the disappearance of her baby sister, Virginia, had dedicated herself to protecting the innocents of the world and searching for Virginia. When someone shoots an arrow at the widowed doctor and inventor Edward Napier, Earl of Cathcart, Agnes throws herself in its path. She forces Cathcart to take her with him to his home in the lower Highlands to find the assassin and protect the Earl's children.A wonderfully descriptive tale of love, loss and regret over past mistakes. Agnes is a strong, capable woman who believes love must wait until her quest is completed.

Agnes is a wonderfully unconventional historical heroine. Brave, intelligent and beautiful-she's a bodyguard-and Miss Lamb's skillful, fun writing carries that, at first implausible, lady's occupation off. Her hero is equally a bold character as he is a studious, intelligent inventor of textiles. A truly enjoyable read. 5 stars!

This one is especially good because Angnes is the type of women we would all like to be in one way or another. The love story between her and the doctor is funny, frustrating, infuriating and wonderful and makes you want to keep reading. I have all her books and can't wait for the next. If you want romance from the heart, here it is.
