0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth a read for those interested in WWI By Les I liked this not because I especially admired the Kaiser. It was interesting to read what he says and does not say. It is all very formal with his views on the subject he chooses. Early on, he quotes an American scholar who talks about the policy of "encirclement of Germany". He claims this fellow (Prof Usher) was esteemed by everyone and therefore this proves that there was an American/Anglo policy long before the war. And of course France wanted revenge. He does not take up the fact that the Germans attacked Belgium and started the war on the eastern front. He does not mention his mother and barely his father. He dwell on his contribution to education, and labor, while giving us his views of the intelligence of important men of the period. Nicholas, of course, is not intelligent and is lead by the nose by his wife. While mentioning Edward VII and George V he does not say anything about them. Not unexpectedly, this is his justification and self-praise for his years as Kaiser. Of note to me is his utter lack of self-awareness. While the book is not on a humorous subject, he shows a supreme lack of any sense of humor even in describing pompous people. It therefore comes as a complete shock, near the end when he begins to talk about a movement for his abdication.His arguments are didactic, in his descriptions of his motivations for example, of building a Navy, he sees no reason for it to cause alarm in other nations. He does not see his own army as bellicose, nor does he connect the eagerness of Austria to go to war with Serbia, with Russian mobilization. In fact he does not mention Austria's ultimatum then attack on Serbia at all. He was vacationing on his Yacht in the Baltic Sea. Therefore a rather odd book but definitely worth reading if one has an interest ion WWI. He thinks his analysis of every situation is brilliant. It is very useful to hear him in his own words display his boring, didactic, humorless I am always right personality.
