Mueller Jeanne Register, a descendant of one of the families of displaced Acadians, has looked at her family’s history, done an enormous amount of meticulous research, and produced an exciting tale of one of the displaced families. In case all you know about the Acadians is Cajun cooking (some Acadians migrated to Louisiana, see “Evangeline”), you will learn all about a charming, clever, merry, hard-working, food-loving (they’d be modern day “foodies”) group of people in this bookThe author begins slowly with a leisurely scene-setting of the idyllic life of the Acadians in what is now called Nova Scotia. Her heroine Alesse meets the Mi’kmaq Indian Quintuk who is to play an important part in her life when he rescues her from a bear. Soon afterwards she marries childhood friend Paul. Sadly, she and her community then become collateral damage in the on-going fight over North America between the French and the British when the English arrive to drive them from their homes and the French send no help. Paul is taken away by the British, but with the help of Quintuk, Alesse and her two very young children escape the British and undertake a dangerous journey to what they hope will be safety in the town of St. Jean.Since I don’t want to include any spoilers, I will stop with the story at this point. What you should know is that Jeanne Register is a very gifted story-teller. While her research is truly impressive, in the end, this is just a truly engrossing and enjoyable story to read!

Look Inside By Bonnie Leonard I love a book that carries me to a different place and time in history so I can live there with an engaging set of characters for a while. You know - the kind of book where a gifted storyteller keeps you reading until you turn the last page and let out a sigh because the adventure is over. "Acadian Passage" by Jeanne Register is just such a book. If you look inside, I suspect you'll see what I mean.
