Author and musician Mitch Alden wanted to record a new CD. Months after running a personal best at the 2009 New York City Marathon, he decided a new full-length CD would be his next goal. During an early spring run, however, the marathon bug emerged from winter's grip and took a bite out of him. As he ran, he formed the crazy idea of combining his passion for singing and running into one epic experience: he could record his CD at a friend's studio in Chicago and race the Chicago Marathon immediately afterward. Though he knew he could accomplish each individually, he wondered if his body would be able to withstand the many high-energy days in the studio only to race 26.2 miles when he was done. Alden shares his thoughts in Musical Miles, a memoir that is equal parts running, music and life lessons. By Amazon Customer As a friend of the author, I'm a bit bias when it comes to writing this review.That being said, this is a great read. It is full of personal and honest thoughts from the mind of one of the nicest people to walk/run this planet. He perfectly blends the world of running with the world of music in a way I didn't expect.If you have a creative bone in your body, be ready to be inspired to get up and go for a run or to create something new. If Mitch can do what he did during the time covered in this book, we have no excuse.And one final thought that I must share is there is a special chapter told by his beloved dog Roo. This chapter alone makes the book worth the purchase price. It made me laugh and tear up a bit as I had the pleasure of meeting this special furry friend while they were still with us.Get inspired and buy this book today!!

I, of course, am partial when a former student asks me to read his/her book. MUSICAL MILE, however, presented me with a different challenge. It was about running,( marathons no less) and a type of music that for me was foreign territory. Basically, I'm lethargic and a lover of classical music. So, I was a bit leery as to what my reaction would be to a different worldAs began reading, my first impression was, "Wow! This kid can really write !" I was caught up by the sensitivity of his impressions and the accuracy his images. His relationship to his subjects was simply poetical. But then something dawned on me. I didn't have to run to appreciate his total dedication, to and love for this sport. I could simply sit and envy his obvious devotion and drive in attempting to give it his best. The music was an easier solution. He had given me a CD of his music, and here I could easily become part of a world that he had created that was not only true to life, idealistic and poetically explosive, but equally impressive was a voice that without effort pierced through the center of his lyrics. Here was an honest direct and true artist.As all good books, this one transformed me, changed my outlook on things, and made my life just a bit richer. Mitch and I met a few weeks ago after all these years, and I have to say, and here I will admit to total bias and pride, the man and the writer are one and the same.George Blouin/Auburn MaineP.S.
