In 1968, Jim Sinay packed up his green Caddy convertible and drove from Canton, Ohio to Las Vegas. His “Uncle” Ed Pucci, who was Frank Sinatra’s bodyguard and a close family friend, set him up with an entry level dealer’s job in Vegas. Over the next three decades, Jimmy experienced all Las Vegas had to offer. He dealt craps to famous gangsters in a private game, he interacted with John Wayne, Elvis Presley, Redd Foxx, Debbie Reynolds, Louis Prima and other celebrities. Jimmy was a confirmed bachelor who lived the high life with the ladies, although at times his carousing nearly cost him his life. He saw hundreds of thousands of dollars bet on one roll of the dice, he caught gambling cheaters and had run ins with some very nasty types. Jimmy’s stories are folktales from a bygone era, the 1960s, 70s and 80s when Vegas was still a relatively small town. Back in the day, the “joints” were ruled by men whose names all ended in vowels and there was a good time to be had 24/7. When It Was Great will make you laugh and touch your heart, but most of all it will take you back to the Las Vegas of yesterday, when the Rat Pack played at the Sands, Elvis headlined at the Hilton and working stiffs like Jimmy partied like there was no tomorrow.

First time I have read a book and thought, "Would love to get a beer with this guy!"Pull up a chair as Jim deals a well written memoir of his life lived in Vegas. It is filled with fascinating stories told from a witty, nonjudgmental point of view. I am in my mid 30's and visit Vegas 2x a month seeking experiences similar to what is written in this book. I never got a chance to know what Vegas was like during the Rat Pack/Elvis/Mob days and Jim put me right in a time machine for first hand experience. To Jim- Thank you for this gem! The fellas and I will certainly be doing a toast in your honor!

Interesting stories!Lots of name dropping of the famous people he met and rubbed elbows with, while working as a dealer in the casinos of old Las Vegas, during its hay day! Jim sure didn't seem to ever have a boring day in his life!!My rating would have been a very solid 5 stars, for the quality of the interesting stories being told, had it not been for all the editing errors I had to wade through on most pages. Dependent clauses were very seldom set off by a comma, which brought me out of my enjoyment of the story each time a missing comma was encountered. Words and entire phrases were missing mid-sentence, twice: you can fill in the blanks as you read, but you should not have to. Words were misspelled in at least three places. All errors are only minor annoyances that can be overlooked, in favor of the quality of the stories being told, and are easily correctable, should the authors decide to correct them. If they correct the errors, I'll happily change my rating to 5 stars for this book.I really enjoyed this book's exciting, unique stories and recommend it to everyone as a great read! I read it straight through without ever putting it down!

Mr. Sinay didn't allege,or even infer that his story was unique. The book's title is When It Was Great not When It Was Great For Me. When he refers to stars such as Elvis,Wayne,Sinatra etc, as nice guys, did Rich B expect him to trash the deceased? I think Mr Sinay and I are of the same generation and I found his portrayal of moods, atmospheres, people and events to be refreshing and comforting. It took me back and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am,however, envious of his "social" life.
