In the idyllic university town, young women daydreamed as they lay on the grass and gazed up at the clouds. Young men took morning walks at Alfred Park. Hot summer afternoons were for drinking sherbet and eating watermelons, and evenings were meant for reading poetry. It was also a time of stifling social mores, and love was an unattainable ideal seldom realized. Allahabad of the 1940s is the serene backdrop to the turbulence of Chander s love for his professor s daughter Sudha. Driven by his passionate belief in the transcending purity of their love, Chander persuades Sudha to marry another man, to devastating consequences. Unhinged by his separation from Sudha and consumed by a restless desire to make sense of love Is it really about sex? Is the purity of love a lie? Chander spirals into a destructive affair with the seductive Pammi. Immensely popular since its publication more half a century ago, Chander & Sudha continues to seduce readers with its potent mix of tender passion and heartbreaking tragedy.

Review An engaging love story but also a critique of the restrictive social norms of the time, and how they affected relationships and women s lives --DawnThe quality of [Poonam Saxena s] translation is superb. I have read and reread Gunahon Ka Devta and this is one of those rare instances where the prose does not sound absurd in translation. --Hindustan TimesIt s a delightful read. --Outlook

An English Reincarnation By Anshul Punetha A tricky one to review, like most translations should be.Firstly - Dharamvir Bharti must have been a precocious talent to have written what he did at age 23 - not a shred of doubt.Second - Poonamji undertook a Himalayan challenge in attempting a translation - especially since conveying the original expression and context from rich Hindi to a relatively less well off English is an exercise that begins with a lot of constraints, those that don't go away. I don't think she's done too badly, given this inherent linguistic limitation.Third - and I wish Mr Bharti was around to answer this - what were these two people thinking ? They made a mess out of more lives than just their own ! While the cultural context of Guru Shishya and inter caste marriage hangs overhead like an ominous thundercloud, it seems a little inexplicable as to why either of these two did not even summon the courage to approach Sudha's father and speak with him.(Perhaps Mr Bharti was inspired by Wuthering Heights when he set about writing this ?)All in all, a decent attempt, though not able to reach the full glory that it aspires to, purely on account of being "lost in translation".

The Anchor Cross is an action-packed novel based in Harlan County, Kentucky. Hiking in a remote area, a child discovers a beautiful golden anchor cross that was brought into Harlan County in 1798. The artifact is constructed of pure gold that is traced back to having been blessed by Christ and given to St. Peter to help start the church. Very mysterious and unexplainable events seem to occur to those possessing the cross. J. Bert Sterling, sheriff of Harlan County, becomes involved in solving the story behind the cross, and also finds that it was responsible for preventing a multimillion dollar bank robbery that was planned to steal monies placed in the bank by Eastern Kentucky's most notorious drug dealer, Pretty Boy Maggard. Even the sheriff's cat, Preacher Puss, gets in on the action. The author's cast of characters exhibit mountain humor at its best. One reviewer of the book stated, "The book is great. I was quickly engrossed with the story line." The Anchor Cross weaves fact and fiction with a lot of nostalgic anecdotes. It will leave you with a grin on your face and a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Getting to know a family from Tennessee By hippolein First time for everything. I'm a lover of Fantasy and Science-Fiction books, read also paranormal and things like that. But as this book was recommended in our bookclub, wanted to give it a go.If you love to know more about the history of one family, written through the archives they found and the stories they managed to tell and pass on, this would be the ideal book for you. We get to follow the long ago relatives from the writer up to very nearby. Was a very interesting read, as didn't know anything about Tennessee before. Thanks for sharing this background!

I really enjoyed the stories from three generations of the DeFreece family. This was a neat idea the author Becky Corwin-Adams had. It made me think this would be a terrific way to preserve one's ancestry.Listening to these tales stirred memories about the stories my elders told me when I was younger. Many along the same lines. Hard-working humble families who were trying to make a living. I liked the part where she talked about what they ate during the week then having a big Sunday dinner. At the end of the book there are several country recipes from the old days that I'd try but a few I've had before.Olivia Searfoss did a great job narrating. She has a nice voice and kept an even pace throughout the story. She made this an easy to listen to book. Very enjoyable.Audiobook received in exchange for an unbiased review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Giving Readers a Slice of HIstory By krissyl If you enjoy reading about history from a personal standpoint, "Tales from Tennessee" is for you. Author Becky Corwin-Adams has a gift for making whatever she writes about come to life, and this colorful family memoir is no exception. The author traces her family history back to her maternal grandmother, who lived in Tennessee. The book paints a vivid picture of rural life at the turn of last century, and is full of entertaining anecdotes and even some juicy family scandals. Corwin-Adams provides readers with a snapshot of Tennessee in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and then immortalizes the members of the DeFreece clan in the subsequent sections of the book.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in genealogy and history. It might even inspire you to research your own family tree a bit more, as it did for me.

Seltsame Dinge passieren in Nimmerland … Achtung: Cliffhanger! Die Fortsetzung "Die Rache des Pan" ist bereits erhältlich.

A Foregone Conclusion, by William Dean Howells

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

I hadn't either until I stumbled over his name several years ago, back when I was reading Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser. Howells was a proponent and practitioner of realism in literature, a concept that meshed pretty well with novels written by Norris and Dreiser. Since I enjoyed "The Octopus," "McTeague," "Sister Carrie," and "An American Tragedy" so much, I just knew I needed to visit a few of Howells's novels at some point. That time is now. I read two of them, this one and "A Modern Instance". I'm not overly impressed with them. I know, I know...I probably need to read "The Rise of Silas Lapham" to get the full William Dean Howells effect. I just don't want to right now. I can say, after reading these two books, that I understand why Howells is such an obscure figure in American literature. He might practice the sort of realism that fueled many of the novels from Norris and Dreiser, but his failure to focus on the sordid details of American life cost him a lasting reputation with a popular audience."A Foregone Conclusion" takes place in Italy during the 1860s. While the Civil War rages away across the pond, American consul Henry Ferris spends his days painting pictures and enjoying the quaint Italian atmosphere. One day he receives a visit from Don Ippolito, a Catholic priest with a flair for inventing devices that don't work. He tries to sell Ferris an idea about a new cannon that will revolutionize warfare, but leaves dejected when the consul points out a glaring design flaw. The visit has a larger significance, however, when Mrs. Vervain and her daughter Florida arrive on the scene. Two Americans taking a leisurely jaunt through Europe, the Vervains strike up an initially one-sided friendship with Henry Ferris. When Mrs. Vervain expresses the desire that her daughter should learn Italian, Ferris remembers Ippolito and recommends him to the two women. And the promise of a job comes just in the nick of time, too, as the good Don is nearly broke and desperately needs funds to retain his residence. He agrees to accept the task, and in no time at all the Vervains, Don Ippolito, and Henry Ferris embark on several lengthy tours of the beautiful Italian landscape.Problems soon emerge that threaten the group's tranquility. Florida, a proud but beautiful young woman, soon draws the attentions of both Don Ippolito and Henry Ferris. Should be a no brainer, right? How can a Catholic priest act on feelings he has for a woman? The whole celibacy vow should kill off any ideas about romance in a hurry. Not so fast. As the story gradually reveals, Ippolito never really wanted to become a priest in the first place. He is currently undergoing a crisis of faith that makes him want to leave the priesthood in order to become an inventor. Ferris assumes this revelation means Ippolito will run off with Florida, so he leaves Italy in a huff to do his own thing in the United States, always plagued by the memory of Florida Vervain and what might have been had the two married. I won't spoil the conclusion of the story for all two of the people who might read this book in the next couple of decades except to say that a marriage does eventually take place, as do several deaths, and the surviving characters often reflect on lessons learned during those troubled yet halcyon days in Italy.I'm being a bit harsh on "A Foregone Conclusion". I did enjoy several elements of the novel, primarily the fascinating and minute detail Howells uses to describe the Italian countryside. He spent some time in Venice as consul during the Civil War (write what you know, I guess), so he is familiar with the sights and sounds of the region. He's a good writer too, good enough to bring the places the characters visit to life. Dialogue isn't a problem for Howells either, but prepare yourself for reading a novel clogged with constant talking and chitchatting. These people spit out more words than a livestock auctioneer on uppers. It's a good thing Howells occasionally alleviates things somewhat through the humorous antics of Mrs. Vervain. Without that, I am not sure I would have made it through the novel. Anyway, there are good things to say about "A Foregone Conclusion," and they offset occasionally the plodding pace and an ending that seemed rushed. Speaking of problems with the novel, did anyone else notice how certain parts of the story seemed like they were stuck together without any attempt to make them flow? I did. It's the mark of a writer still feeling his way through a first or second novel.I came into "A Foregone Conclusion" with the comparison between Howells, Norris, and Dreiser on my mind, so I noticed right away the lavish attention spent on creating detailed atmosphere (a hallmark of realism and central to stories by Norris and Dreiser) as well as the controversial idea of placing a priest with a crisis of faith front and center in the story. The idea of a man of the cloth doubting the existence of God must have shocked readers of the story back in the 1870s, but it's less sordid of a concept today. Another reviewer noticed how Howells used Ippolito and Ferris as representatives of the divide between America and Europe in the late 19th century. Good catch! I never saw that while I read the book, but the theory fits in well with Howells perceptions about the differences between the two geographical regions. So there you go. "A Foregone Conclusion" does offer up plenty of meat to the lover of classic literature. You just need to get past the problems I noted above to get there. Good luck.

Uneasy friendship between 2 men of the 19th Century By Dave Deubler American artist-turned-consul Henry Ferris befriends Don Ippolito, a Venitian priest, in this short novel by William Dean Howells. One summer in Venice during the Civil War period two American tourists - a Mrs. Vervain and her beautiful daughter Florida - turn to these two men for help and change their lives forever. Don Ippolito, despite his vow of celibacy, believes he is falling in love with Florida, while Ferris, all diplomacy and artistic sensibilities, finds her haughty and ill-mannered. But more than the love story, Howells seems interested in exploring the uneasy relationship between these two very different men. And the way things end up, is of course, a foregone conclusion.Howells, one of the primary proponents of American Realism, presents us with a story that can nevertheless be viewed on many levels: as psychology, as religion, as art - the book hints at the whole world of human feeling. So why does Howells choose to tell this story of a Venetian priest who tinkers with mechanical gadgets, and an American consul who fancies himself a painter? A geo-political reading would suggest that the competition for the beautiful Florida symbolizes the struggle between the old and the new - certainly a relevant issue for post-Civil War Americans. Perhaps even more to the point, Howells may be using these characters to represent contrasting literary styles, where the priest is the dreamy romantic and the artist is the practical realist. However one chooses to interpret it, this is an entrancing story about two men at the crossroads of their lives, with exquisite prose, and some subtle moral lessons that make it well worth reading.Of course there are some of the problems common with 19th Century fiction: the point of view makes it difficult to see the women as more than caricatures, there's absolutely no humor, and virtually no action. So if reading about the feelings and conversations of a man from a bygone era doesn't interest you, you might want to look elsewhere.

In writing the stories in The Prevalence of Love, R. J. Reilly draws on his own experience as a husband, father, GI in World War II, university professor, and long-time Michigan resident. On occasion, his characters have been known to root for the Detroit Tigers baseball team. Like Reilly himself, the characters in his stories draw on their own life experiences and relationships, as well as religion, philosophy, and literature to help them respond to the challenges of living, loving and growing older. Readers will recognize these people: they are us, our family members, our friends, our neighbors. They are trying to make sense of their relationships and their lives. Some of the characters Reilly introduces you to are long-time happily married couples. Others are those given a second chance at love. Some are new to love while others are lamenting opportunities lost. But finding love isn't the only challenge they face. There's the eternal questions of who am I? and how do I matter? along with the seemingly mundane issues of adjusting to retirement and relocation and the achingly sorrowful need to cope with illness or the loss of a beloved spouse. So, if you like stories about love, romance, and second chances, you will find these stories moving and inspiring. If, like Reilly's characters, you occasionally ponder the bigger questions, you will recognize the dilemmas faced by many of the people in these stories. He doesn't always provide the answers, but the conversation is always worth listening to.

By Kimberly Fuga > As I enter my 60th year of life, along with friends who are in their 6th decade, we spend a lot of time reminiscing and wondering what we could have or should have done differently and pondering what is left to come in our lives.>> Bob Reilly's "Prevalence of Love" reminds me of a high school football game book. Although sold as fiction Bob's life experiences take you on a journey of what life can toss into the mix at any given moment....sudden death, sudden life....finding and losing love...new beginnings and sorrowful endings. All in all, when you fill in your life's learnings with Bob's game book, one hopes to hang on and enjoy the ride to its ultimate conclusion.>> This book can be read over and over. Depending on where you are in your own life will determine what you take away from each story.

By Kathy Konwiak A friend recommended this book because she knows I'm always up to try new local authors ( east side Detroiter). Turns out Mr. Reilly is not a new author, but one I'll read again. Many of the short stories in this collection are gems, describing the point of view of a partner in a love relationship. I liked the fact that most of the characters think/have thought about literature and philosophy and are trying to figure out how love is explained in these categories. PS. Highly recommended for all you liberal arts majors out there!

After reading a story, you actually put yourself in that situation and try and figure out what you would do. Prevalence of Love makes you use your brain and makes you come to your own conclusion.

I stuck with it but never did manage to like the heroine By shoulders3 I will start by saying that I usually make it a practice to not give my opinion when I do not like a book since I know everyone has different tastes. I am making an exception for this book though since they bombarded me with advertising it on my Facebook page and I finally bought it simply because the premise sounded intriguing and the reviews made it sound like it would be good. After reading the book, I started to imagine that the good reviews were either planted or written by very young or immature readers so I thought I would share in case someone else in my demographic (voracious reader, female, late forties) was sucked into this hype.First off, the sex while sometimes graphic is not very tantalizing in my opinion. It sounds like a teenager describing something she is not really familiar with but trying to make it sound hot and failing miserably. Bear in mind that my idea of well written steamy sex scenes would be along the lines of those written by Elizabeth Hoyt. I don't even mind when clinical terms are used as long as overall it doesn't sound clinical. For me, this book totally could have left the sex scenes out because they were that hard to read.Secondly, the heroine is hard to identify with. I never had a hard time liking Bella in the Twilight series, but I know many did. If you are one of them, then you will most likely not like this book.Lastly, the hero is a little creepy/stalkerish and I'm not sure when that became hot. I had a hard time with 50 shades of gray because the hero was unlikable in that respect but at least 50 shades of gray was initially very hot (it is just for me the sex parts started getting almost boring by book 3 and the characters got more and more whiny and irritating). This book never even has hot going for it which at least helped 50 shades.I guess overall it gets down to very poor character development so you never really understand what motivates them. And since that is usually what makes a story good, that is why this one falls short. I will say that I at least got all the way through it, if only because I kept feeling like it would get better. I wish now I had just given up.

The main character is unbelievably immature and sleeps with the guy the whole time thinking about his brother. What a turn off! Not to mention she is disgustingly shallow and the author has some pretty stupid views on what love really is when she has the two characters arguing about whether he would still be in love with her if she gained weight. He says he would and this is her response,“Sure, plenty of guys still love their girlfriends when they get fat, but then they stop having sex,” I say, putting dirty dishes in the sink. “Then the relationship goes to crap and that’s when the guy resents the woman for gaining weight.” So because you gain a little bit of weight you are suddenly undesirable and not worth making love to? Don't waste your money!

43 of 48 people found the following review helpful. Humor, heart and a bit of angst. By Kim {kimberlyfaye reads} ”I have the world’s laziest dog, Hangover, I have a quasi-boyfriend who is too cute and unstable for his own good – Hotty – and my new protector or guardian, who I can only think of as Lusty. What a cast of characters.”Jessica is summoned to a small town after learning of her Aunt Virginia’s death. She has vague memories of her aunt and is slightly confused about why her aunt left her everything in her will. She just wants to get everything straightened out in Hera so she can return to her life in New York. But the longer she spends in Hera, the more it starts to feel like home thanks to the town’s natives. Jessica finds herself in Hera. She also finds some amazing friends and two incredible, gorgeous men.“Perhaps its my inexperience at both love and sex. They arrived in my life at the same time, so it’s next to impossible for me to separate the two and ascertain if the love is genuine or if it’s merely a side effect to making love.”The Blackard brothers are about as different as they can possibly be. Dylan is hyper and attentive and doesn’t hold back. His older brother Carson is far more reserved. Jessica can’t really get a read on him. It doesn’t take long for her to realize that these two men were her childhood playmates. She and Dylan enter into a whirlwind relationship. Despite her relationship with Dylan, however, she can’t seem to get Carson out of her mind. He’s quiet and sexy, protective and thoughtful. Dylan and Carson are both keeping secrets. When the truths start to come out, Jessica has some tough decisions to make. Dylan or Carson? Hera or New York? You’ll have to read to find out for yourself.“We don’t always get do-overs. Think very carefully before making a decision about love,” he says to me. “Sometimes when it’s offered, it may have an expiration date.”I want to be friends with these characters. They each seemed so real. Jessica was funny, smart and strong. She was indecisive and not all that bright when it came to her love life, but that’s part of her charm. Dylan was like a giant ball of energy. He had his good and bad moments, but the latter were justifiable. Carson was absolutely swoon worthy. I wouldn’t mind having a hot man like that in my life. You know, one who can build furniture for me, fix things around the house and then crawl into bed with me at the end of a long day. Is that sexist? I don’t even care if it is. :) Imogene and Lauren were a fantastic addition to this book – and Jessica’s life – as was Archie.“I’m not a care-free spirit like my Aunt Virginia was. I’m very much a product of my upbringing and my parents taught me to figure out what I need to do. I’m good at that. But now I want to fire out what I want to do, too.”What I loved most about this book – aside from the gorgeous writing and the charming characters – was the fact that I really wasn’t ever able to get a feel for how it was all going to end. The relationships – whether friendship, romantic or familial – were complicated. There was an extraordinary amount of depth to the storyline. Fearsome sucked me in from the beginning and I had a really difficult time setting this book down.“I just want you to be mine,” he says. “You have me; body and soul, and all the parts in between.”Fearsome had humor and heart (and a bit of angst). It was sweet and sexy. But, it was more than your typical romance novel. The love triangle didn’t come off as trite as they often do. Given Jessica’s history with the Blackard brothers, it was completely conceivable that she could have feelings for both of them. It was equally believable that they could each be harboring feelings for her, too. At its core, Fearsome was a story of a woman growing, figuring out what she wanted from life and falling in love as a result. It was a wonderful coming of age story with an absolutely delightful cast of characters. I wanted to spend more time in their world.I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All quotes come from the review copy and may differ from the final version.

The Lady Upstairs, by Eleanor Trevithick

About the Author Eleanor Trevithick was born Eleanor Rose Davis in 1918 in the small village of East Charleston, Vermont not far from the Canadian border. Her family moved to Piermont, New Hampshire where they lived out the Great Depression on their rural farm. Although Eleanor spent most of her childhood on the farm, she never took to farm chores. She was just not born to milk cows--she was born to write. She had a full and happy life with her beloved husband, Ken Trevithick and their son Bob in upstate New York. To his parent's delight, Bob finally married the wonderful Viviane. Eleanor lost both Ken and Bob, but she persevered continuing her love of writing until 2015 when she died at the age of 96. It was just a few years earlier that she had a stroke which took away her ability to read for pleasure. Her saving grace was that she could still write on the computer as her words flowed through her fingers though it was painfully slow for her to read her words. She wrote the entirety of her book "Down Under" after her stroke, and then found an earlier story, "The Lady Upstairs," which she finished recently. She published poems, lyrics, and stories, as well as three previous novels: "Chasing My Shadow," "The Hunt for Tanya," and "Down Under." Her joy was to share her writings.

This novel starts in the year 2066 with a gathering of friends and family. And, then a flashback to the year 2015 to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. The novel evolves and covers multiple action fronts. This book has an emphasis on family throughout. And, not just the relationship based on a blood family but also the brothers-in-arms family that the military creates. Bonds are forever in both types of family.Gordon's idea concerning the problems in the US hit the nail on the head. The moral decay of society coupled with a lack of skills are what he blamed for the decline. All in all, a most interesting read full of action and twists and turns. To friends, family and a toast to the future! Semper Fi.Most highly recommended.

By Amazon Customer If you have not read any of the other parts of the Van Zandt stories you should probably go ahead and read those before picking this guy up. This book moves the story along very well. There are many twists that I for one did not see happening. The Van Zandt will to keep trucking does get questioned which is an odd moment. Granted it shows that he is a human and not a robot. His run-ins on the road are unexpected. I am a fan of Mr. Hopf's work and lets say this did not disappoint. Also really with the cliffhanger's. I can only assume 2 things from the "CALL" ...........Can't wait for the next installment. Yah I read it in a few hours and wish it was longer but that's me being greedy.

It was great to see the continuous development of such great characters, and the realism of the situations in it. What I love about this series, is that everything that happens in the novel could very well happen in real life. Great job Mr. Hopf! Im looking forward to more!

As Country As It Gets: Short stories from Appalachia, by Cas Roberts

Review In Roberts' Appalachian narrative read, it offers a series of enthralling vignettes, revealing time-tested tips for success, Appalachian style. Along the way, he espouses and reflects upon positive values and a common sense approach to human relations that will leave even the most cynical reader misty-eyed and longing for simpler times. This, in essence, is the secret to getting maximum enjoyment from Roberts' timeless, folklore-infused narrative: go slow, breathe deeply, and savor each moment. Reviewed by Rich Follett for Readers' Favorite Critique: " As Country As It Gets: Short stories from Appalachia" is a compilation of fourteen short stories that are a pleasant (and often nostalgic) read. Clearly Cas Roberts has a natural born gift for storytelling -- and one that will leave his enthusiastic readers looking forward to any of his future works. Very highly recommended and enjoyable reading!  Margaret's Bookshelf   midwestbookreview.com/rbw/apr_15.htm#margaret As Country as it Gets is everything it should be and nothing it shouldn't be.  It's warm, wonderful, charming, and a total eye-opener. It lived up to my expectations beautifully and surpassed them once I began "visiting" with the author. I say "visiting" instead of reading because that's the FEEL he has achieved with this book. Books about Kentucky by Joi Sigers Genuine Kentucky.com

From the Author By MELODIE PHELPSNews Editor, Wayne Co.,Outlook        Wayne County was home to Cas Roberts until he was about 14-years-old, and it was during those formative years that Roberts learned about the way of life that he now shares through his writing.    Never imagining that he would become an author, the former Wayne County native is just that, having recently published his latest volume entitled "As Country As It Gets." The book of shorts stories spotlights life in Appalachia and a heritage that Roberts feels needs  to be preserved.    "It's our heritage and it is who we are," Roberts explained, during a recent visit to Wayne County. He has relatives who still reside here and enjoys visiting the community.    Roberts, who is now retired,  previously published a book of poetry, entitled "Appalachian Poetry." A picture of Pilot Rock in Wayne County is featured on the cover of the book, and on the back is a  picture of teams of mules plowing the field. The volume includes "Mountain Home," which  describes life in a country cabin. It is true  "from the heart writing."    "This was written to preserve who and what we are and where we came from," said Roberts. With "As Country As It Gets," Roberts takes readers back to the things he learned from his parents and grandparents, as he grew up in the country in  the 1950s. Stories include experiences hunting wild  ginseng, coon hunting, logging, and moonshining. Roberts, who now resides in Lincoln County, noted that there has been a recent resurgence of interest in Appalachian life. He hopes that this book educates another generation about that special time and place that many have moved away from.    "I love what I am doing. I am telling stories about the old way of life and bringing it to another generation," said Roberts.    He also notes that the fact he was able to write and publish these books should also be an inspiration to others. Roberts is self-taught, and he has many talents. He found writing later in life, after he spent years working in the logging industry, in saw mills, in factories and as a diesel mechanic.    It took a lot of hard work to get to the finished product of "As Country As It Gets." The book went through several different edits before completion, and Roberts is pleased with the product.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Step into a world of values and lifestyle rarely seen today By John Bird Cas Roberts grew up in rural Kentucky in the 50’s and 60’s. And though it wasn’t that long ago, it was a different world from the one we live in today. In his book, As Country as it Gets: Short stories from Appalachia, Roberts writes of his boyhood work and play—logging with mules, searching for and selling Ginseng, building wooden wagons that he and his brothers raced down hillsides, and, later, making moonshine. These essays are fascinating to me. Though I’ve never lived there, I grew up hearing stories of my ancestors who lived in the mountains of West Virginia. I can imagine my granddad in these stories, which are so much like his own.In lots of ways evident from this book, life in Appalachia is like life a century ago. My dad grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, but he didn’t go to a one-room school house heated by coal, or use an outhouse, or plow with draft horses. Nor did he know how to make whiskey without scorching it. But Mr. Roberts did. Rumors say he could even “get a poodle to tree a raccoon.”There may have been disadvantages to such a life, but there were acres of advantages. By the time Mr. Roberts was a teenager, he could do things most men can’t do today. If he needed something, he made it. If he had a problem, he found a way to fix it, all through experience. A good example is from his boyhood wagon making:“In my younger days I built three or four of these types of wagons. I learned if the front axle was a little shorter than the rear axle it would roll and could be pulled by hand much better. Several other young boys also built this type of wagon.”Besides riding down hills in the wagons, the boys also used them for gathering Ginseng in the woods and hauling the valuable roots to buyers—one of their few ways to earn money. The writing in this book is rough. At times Mr. Roberts is repetitive and gives almost too much detail. Other times, he gives little more than an outline of a topic, leaving the reader with questions. But the stories are always sincere and interesting. Roberts writes in his own style, for his own enjoyment, and so that others can “step into a world of values and lifestyle rarely seen today.” The unpolished style actually contributes to the whole experience:“At nighttime when hunting raccoon he [Smokey the coon dog] was the most amazing dog I may have ever known. Coon hunting, he would be the last dog to leave your side, with him scratching and pissing on everything. Then suddenly, at a great distance from you he just starts barking up a tree….”If you’re like me, nostalgic for the older, simpler way of life, enjoy history, and enjoy sincere writing, then I recommend As Country as it Gets.

Roberts The stories in this book are a great read for anyone who wants to get a better understanding of what it is like to be from and grow up in Appalachia. This collection of short stories offers a view into a lifestyle that is fast diminishing and is fascinating whether you are someone who grew up in the country or in the city. If you are looking for an honest perspective into what being Appalachian is all about, this book is for you.

Henry Dowell-Playwright If you grew up during a certain time in history and in a certain part of the world then you'll know exactly what Cas Roberts is talking about in his book, As Country As It Gets. If that's you then you'll really enjoy this collection of stories because it's going to bring back some memories for you.Living in a log cabin without running water or electricity. Hunting for Ginseng. Plowing with a pair of mules. Making molasses. Going to school in a one room school house. Making moonshine. This is life in Appalachia in the 1950s. These are things that very few people in this day and age have experienced and probably never will. In fact, I'd bet that most people in this country would consider this ancient history, relegated to text books like Abraham Lincoln or Daniel Boone. But this is Cas Roberts' life and within these stories and pictures you'll find moral lessons that are just as true today as they were sixty years ago. The value of hard work and ingenuity and dependence on one's self and the natural world to survive.Do you know how many kids today won't eat a piece of chicken with a bone in it? Most parents have a hard time getting kids to make their bed or take out the garbage. What if these kids had REAL work they had to do? As a society we've lost any trace of common sense and that pioneer spirit that this country was built on. The same spirit that you'll find in the stories in this book. The best thing about this book is that you can almost hear Mr. Roberts telling you these stories himself. Sitting around a fire somewhere, listening to the whippoorwills singing in the distance. If that, or any of the experiences in this book seem foreign to you, may I suggest you pick it up and educate yourself about a way of life that's practically gone but still has lessons to teach us all.

As in both of her previous novels, the author has depicted the time, place and characters with impressive detail and authenticity. By sheer chance I read the novel while travelling through mountainous old villages and medieval walled towns in places like Slovakia, Albania, Montenegro et alia, and reading this novel at this particular time really gave me insight into the daily life, customs and beliefs of the people who may have lived (and loved) in such places.

This rare book contains a fictionalised account of the day-to-day life of Walt Whitman, written by May Byron. A fascinating and insight biographical work of the great American poet, this is a book that will greatly appeal to fans of Walt Whitman and constitutes a must-have for collectors of Byron’s seminal work. Mary Clarissa Byron (1861 –1936) was a British poet and writer, best remembered for her abridged version of J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Bryon wrote many fictional day-to-day accounts of the lives of notable poets and writers, famously influencing Joyce’s writing of Ulysses with her book, A Day With William Shakespeare. This book has been elected for modern republication due to its immense literary value in the hope that it will be read and enjoyed for generations to come. We are proud to republish this scarce antiquarian book complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.
