I handed off my carefully formatted technical documents to a translation vendor, then I waited waited waited while the translators (working as fast as they could) extracted the text from my documents, put the English text into a form that translators could handle, sent that text out to be transformed into some number of languages, then forwarded all the translated text over to a desktop-publishing expert to reformat everything. Let's not even talk about what it took to translate the text inside graphics. Finally finally finally, the translated documents looked more or less like the originals.Oh, the delays. Oh, the costs.When XML came along into the lives of many technical writers, it took some of the inefficiency out of the formatting and reformatting. But it wasn't until XLIFF was developed—thanks to this book's authors, Bryan Schnabel, Rocolfo Raya, and JoAnn Hackos—that the translation part of the workflow could be truly automated.I wish XLIFF had been around back when I was handing off my docs and then waiting, waiting, waiting...Is this book for you?
