Well-written Bio Celebrates Stefano's Life And Work By Phillip Crawford Jr. Joey Stefano was gay porn's greatest star who quickly became a celebrated icon of pop culture. He was included in Madonna's 1992 Sex book, and has a cameo in her video "Deeper and Deeper." Tragically, he died in 1994 at just 26 from a drug overdose. Many stories have circulated about Stefano's life and death, and in Joey Stefano: The Life, Loves & Legacy of the Prince of Passion renowned biographer David Bret aims to compassionately weed out myth from reality although some facts always may remain elusive and in controversy.No doubt Stefano had a haunted life. He was born Nicholas Anthony Iacona on New Year's day 1968, and left his hometown of Chester, PA at 15 upon the death of his father who Stefano claims sexually abused him. The underage boy supported himself and his drug habit by turning tricks, and although there were periods during his life in which Stefano was clean through rehabs and 12-step programs -- including the point in 1989 at which he entered the porn business -- he frequently returned to illicit drugs. However, Bret rejects any exaggerated portrayal of Stefano with a death wish who is hell-bent on self-destruction, and dismisses many of the wilder, if not outright absurd, accounts about him. Bret does not hide that he's a Stefano fan, and sometimes he does sound a bit like an overprotective mom whose boy has been wronged, but frankly Stefano deserves a little protection. Stefano was a talented actor with a true calling for his work, and perhaps the best writing in the book addresses Stefano's movies.It's not an accident that Stefano is so adored by his fans, and it's not simply the spectacular entertainment he provided for randy viewers. Gay men often deal with shame about their sexuality, and Stefano with his uninhibited passion helped many of us heal from that. May Joey Stefano always be remembered with other pioneering heroes of the LGBT community, and Bret's book is a welcome tribute.
