About the Author Karen Lechner was born in Tallahassee, Florida and grew up in the backwoods of Wakulla County where she played with snakes and listened to owls call to each other at night. She played at being a photographer, a musician, Peace Corps volunteer and graduate student before starting her teaching career. She corrals middle school kids and tries to help them understand algebra. They make her laugh. She doesn't like to own things, she loves to sleep late and her favorite moment of beauty is when the bare branches of a tree silhouette up against a sky at dusk. And when Richard and Teddy Thompson sing the song "Persuasion."

The author is vulnerable, honest, pure, sensitive, and entertaining. Her sense of humor pierces through her stories and had me giggling and crying in the same sentence. She demonstrates great strength and courage as a young girl and clearly emerges from chaos to become an amazing human being. Lechner is a role model for anyone who is overcoming a difficult childhood.
