At the 1918 Victory Ball held in London’s Albert Hall to celebrate the end of World War I, 22-year old revue star Billie Carleton was slipped a small gold box of cocaine. Next day, her maid found her dead of an overdose in her apartment next to the exclusive Savoy Hotel. Carleton’s death exposed the high-society drug parties organised by Chinese restaurateur ‘Brilliant’ Chang. After the drabness and privation of war, socialites hungered for sensation. Chang supplied it with opium and cocaine. English women, traditionally prudish, found the suave, westernised Chang irresistible. Often in groups, they joined him for drugs and sex in his luxurious apartment in dockside Limehouse. BRILLIANT lifts the curtain on this gaudy episode in London’s jazz age and reveals how Chang inspired Noël Coward, Evelyn Waugh and Sax Rohmer, creator of the diabolical Doctor Fu Manchu. John Baxter was born in Australia but has lived for the last 25 years in Paris. His books include THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WALK IN THE WORLD and biographies of Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick and Robert De Niro. He has also translated, as My Lady Opium, Claude Farrère’s classic of drug literature Fumée d ’Opium.

The Rise and Fall of 'Brilliant' Chang By S Riaz The author of this Kindle Single, does a wonderful job in both setting the scene, and telling the story ,of a man who reinvented himself in London between the wars. Chen Bao Luan arrived in London around 1913, but rather than limit himself to the small, Chinese community clustered around Limehouse, he had soon opened a restaurant in the West End. By the end of WWI, London was tired of bad news and austerity and the now, renamed, Billy ‘Brilliant’ Chang was happy to help his adopted city celebrate. In the notorious clubs, satirised by authors such as Evelyn Waugh, Chang soon controlled nearly half of the cocaine which passed through London, as well as opium. Drugs were, in fact, readily available in the city until 1916, when both opium and cocaine were made illegal. This fascinating read takes us through key events in London, which eventually saw Chang’s ‘fall’ after notorious cases of death by cocaine poisoning. As well as the death of a young dancing instructress, Miss Freda Kempton, which opens the book, there is that of young actress Billie Carleton. Carleton was found unresponsive in her room shortly after the infamous Victory Ball; events which inspired both a short story by Agatha Christie and a play by Noel Coward. If you have any interest in London between the wars, you will enjoy this glimpse into the decadent lifestyle enjoyed by many of its prominent, and wealthy, citizens and the shadowy background figure of ‘Brilliant’ Chang – in many ways the inspiration for the ‘inscrutable’ Oriental, stereotyped in countless books and news stories of the period. Of course, the reality is much more interesting and, although ‘Brilliant’ Chang was very much a background character in the story of the Bright Young Things of the 1920’s, he was obviously a very well known one to those who spent that time in London’s decadent nightclubs of the period.

This is also a must for anyone interested in WW1 England, life on the home front and the wild (and legal) drug culture of English high society and the military. Or did you notknow that one existed. My favorite is the 'drug' kit that could be sent to officers on the front from Harrod's.

John Baxter is rightly, a very successful author and the structure and pace of this story make the book an easy and entertaining read. I can add little to the positive comments of other reviewers other than to recommend this book to anyone seeking an engaging diversion. Highly recommended.
