2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Delightful! By Kate Johnson, medical journalist “Dorek. Deaf and Unheard” is a delightfully rambling romp through the life of a deaf, asexual, vegetarian eccentric who discovers late in life that his Polish ancestry was fabricated by his late mother. In this densely-packed narrative, Dorek leads the reader through the dizzying labyrinth of his brain, taking frequent indulgent side-trips that he cheerfully admits are distractions from the main task. While it is relieving to read at the end that “writing this book has made me comfortable in my own skin”, the book reaches far beyond Dorek’s quirky personality, touching on a wide range of topics, from politics, religion, and art to love and sexuality.Despite his self-professed “lack of courage to spout forth in public” like the soapboxers in Hyde Park, Dorek shouts from the rooftops in this book - even taking flight very dramatically with descriptions of his bizarre fantasies about murdering political figures, cross-dressing, and stealing antiques. For readers familiar with Patricia Borlenghi, some familiar themes resurface and some deeply personal aspects also emerge, including Dorek’s struggle with otosclerosis.
