This is a book of adventure and travel. It is also a memoir, reflecting the author's love for the people and the land, but do not expect a sentimental reflection of years gone by. These stories connect us all as human beings. Bloch expresses his deep wonder as a child, frustration with his studies at the seminary, and his deep longing for freedom. Freedom he receives during his rollicking free life as a hobo, and he flies through graphic descriptions of piloting jet airplanes. Finally Bloch reaches an honest insight into what it's like to be a special agent/pilot for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Here is the first part of his story.

A Brilliant Written Memoir of Intrigue and Grace By M Connolly Bloch's book is a must read for those who do not wish to be told what they should think ,feel and know. Read this book. It will truly give you insight of the world we live in. It has been a long time since I have been so intrigued reading a Memoir. The true test of a " Great Book" is one that stays with me. One I can't stop thinking about long after I have finished the book. This book is one of those great books.Bloch's amazing way of writing is open and honest with no glossing over to bring you along each step of his journey through life as a child growing up on a farm in Minnesota with 17 brothers and sisters. The authors has a remarkable way of taking you through the plight of harsh winters, hot summers, and back breaking work of farm life. Some can relate it to their life and ones that never experienced it will learn that life has many facets. Upon completing 8th grade Bloch entered the Catholic Seminary. That is a book in its self. Bloch's journey as a hobo will take you to a world you've never been. The good, bad and the ugly. His life from a hobo to an Officer, flying jet's, to an instructor pilot, training other Officers to fly jet's in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam war is truly a remarkable story.Bloch's style of writing draws you in and it becomes alive. You are there! In my opinion Bloch is an amazing Author that is as powerful as John Steinbeck. I would and have recommended this book.Thank you Mr. Bloch for an unforgettable and enlightening journey. I am looking forward to reading your continued journey when it is available.

By Donna Enmon "A Shadow at the Gate" is a beautifully written tapestry of life with all the adventures and strange characters you meet along the way. The author, having been born to a large family on a rural dairy farm in Minnesota, first recalls his early childhood with all the challenges of a family originating from German immigrants living life frugally but fully, earning a living from the land and the animals in the way that built this country. He relates memories ranging from his strict Catholic upbringing to hard, cold winters in a drafty old house that had been built with logs. You share his hardship and joy as a larger home is being built to accommodate the growing family. He watches and learns from his no nonsense father who taught him everything from assisting with the birth of a breach calf to the cobbling of worn shoes. And you feel the love and tenderness of his mother as she nurtures her large family. I especially enjoyed his recollections of Christmastime as a young boy on the farm. After being educated in Catholic schools and completing the seminary to become a priest, Bloch realizes he knows nothing of life beyond his sheltered boyhood. So begins a quest to experience life beyond the boundaries of Stearn's County. He leaves Minnesota with only a bedroll, a change of clothes and a few dollars in his pocket, and begins a series of rollicking adventures as he hitchhikes his way across country to sunny California. There begins a life of hopping freight trains and staying in hobo camps until he receives word that he is to report for duty in the United StatesAirforce to which he had enlisted after leaving the seminary. In the Airforce we get to go with him through pilot training and ultimately being assigned as an instructor pilot for the Airforce in Laredo, Texas. After six years in the Airforce, he begins a whole new chapter of his life as an undercover agent and pilot for the infamous DEA....Drug Enforcement Administration. We are told that his adventures, and misadventures, during those days are being saved for another book coming out next year. I will be looking forward to reading that one!Mr. Bloch's vivid descriptions and keen sense of humor bring his memories to life for the reader, reminiscent of Thomas Wolfe in "Look Homeward Angel". I highly recommend this book. You will smile, laugh out loud, and ocassionally shed a few tears. Personally, I could not put it down while reading about his challenges and experiences during his year in pilot training for the Airforce. "Shadow" is an inspiring read and an honest study of the human spirit in all it's variation. I am still enjoying it as I reflect on my favorite passages. Definitely five stars!D.L. Enmon

He was a black and white, matter of fact, all cards on the table, no nonsense kind of guy. Totally different from the other instructors. I could tell there was a real person in there somewhere. I learned of many of his adventures he relates in this book and remembered them through the years. When we again met 27 years later, our friendship picked up as if it had always continued without that break. This is a great book! First, for us older readers, it vividly brings back memories of an earlier time and a similar upbringing. I constantly compared his meager conditions to my same lot in life when I was young. It brought back events I had not thought of or remembered for years. Secondly, this man can write, he is a wordsmith. I compare him to Mark Twain and Robert Ruark. His descriptions place you in the adventure with him. One can feel that they actually went to all the places with him and shared the emotions he felt. I found myself many times stopping to re-read a sentence and think about its great construction and how it described so clearly its intent. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to read his second one.
