From the Author The State Of Reason series was not created quickly, but carefully. Plotted, crafted and edited -- over not weeks or months -- but a period of fifteen years. A friend once told me, "Great Books aren't written, they're re-written."With that in mind, once I became financially independent, I spent nearly every waking moment (and a lot of dreaming moments as well) working full time for more than fifteen years, on nothing but writing these stories, the people who inhabit them -- Franklin, Everon, Cynthia, Victoria and all the others (some not yet Revealed) -- the places they go, the things they do. Studying languages, religions of the world, economics, history, philosophy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, aviation and psychology. These books are my magnum opus, my masterpiece. Every bit of understanding, empathy, focus, wisdom and appreciation for life has gone and is going into these books. I truly hope you enjoy the two that are available now, with more to come. Please feel free to write me. Tell me what you like and what you don't. Tell me what you hope to see in Book 3. I really appreciate it. I answer every email personally. Miles at broadington dot com. "People are hoarding food . . . " For a moment Franklin worried over Everon. "We're pretty lucky, I guess. So far the west part of Pennsylvania is okay." When the white-paper-wrapped sandwiches arrived, she laughed at hers. "This is ridiculous! It must be five inches thick!" He waited while she peeled back the paper. The scent of fresh Italian bread wafted up. A slice of tomato peeked out one side, and-- "French fries and coleslaw inside the sandwich?" "Try it." She had a good-sized mouth. She licked her full, moist lips. He watched her try to wedge her white teeth around it to get the bite. Her eyes went big. As she chewed, the fragrant scent of the slaw's sweet vinegar and oil dressing expanded into the air above the table. When she could finally speak again she pronounced, "Delicious! This coleslaw, the whole thing is fabulous." They ate in silence but for the quiet sounds of smacking lips, the gurgle of a beer. "French fry for your thoughts," Victoria said, holding up one that had dropped from her sandwich. He shook his head. "I was just thinking about what Dean said. Primitive fantasies. People using owls for religious totems. The strange beliefs people've held through the centuries." "I guess it's natural to be critical of someone else's religion, isn't it?" she agreed, taking another bite. He stared at her, shocked, and not sure why. Targeting Pakistan. . . To the man seated between the two standing senior officers, the commander nodded. Ensign David Child extended his hand, and as his two fingers touched the one-inch-diameter round plastic button labeled 2, he hesitated. It was only a moment, perhaps five hundred milliseconds or so, but in that hesitation it seemed as if time expanded. David knew what he was about to do, knew the button's quarter-inch depression would trigger release of a missile waiting, hot, in Tube Number Two, that the missile would launch straight up, burst from the water, follow a trajectory nearly into outer space, coast slowly rotating, and return on a downward arc. David had heard the coordinates called out as their input was confirmed and knew exactly where its warhead was headed, and he knew when it got there what would happen. And in his hesitation David had time to remember hearing the story from his own childhood of pilot Charles Sweeney, who, in the last few minutes before taking his seat to fly Bockscar, the plane that delivered the atomic weapon that would kill thousands of Japanese men, women and children, the last thing Sweeney did was to see a priest. David Child had no time for a priest, only milliseconds of hesitation in which to ponder, to picture the millions of lives he was about to end. Only milliseconds to assure himself that in the long chain that led up to him, here in this moment, to this button, that he was only one man. Only milliseconds--before the years of training took over. David pushed the button. A shudder ran through the long boat. Emerging from the waters above with a whoosh and a roar, a bright torch of death tore into the sky.
About the Author About Miles
Long before 9/11, Miles used to lie in bed at night in his apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side -- just across the park from where Cynthia, Steve and Melissa would be living -- and listen to the sirens. Wondering when someone would drop "The Big One" on The City.
. . . Wondering how the millions of survivors -- if there would be any -- could possibly escape . . . the city government itself encouraging twenty-four hour personal survival kits -- food, medicines, other critical essential personal items. See: Preparing for emergencies in New York City.
As time went on, whenever Miles would leave The City for a day or so for one reason or another, he would return with a creeping, growing, building sense of dread. Driving toward that beautiful skyline on I-95 or the 1 & 9, he would look at the skyscrapers and think, "Is this the day?"
He stuck with The City. It was his home. But to excise the paranoia, he spent his spare time writing the beginnings of this story: Loss Of Reason . . .
Until one night some homeless person stabbed a ballerina to death only a block away from his apartment on the street behind. It was a small, solitary death in the scope of the thousands who die in The City every year, but he took it as a sign. He never knew her, but the attack felt close and personal. He knew it was time to get out.
So he moved west. Out to the Rockies, to the desert, where he no longer felt trapped by the masses. Where he could see the horizon on any given day simply by walking outside. Where the sky was open and the air was clear. It took six months to recover as the paranoia slowly left him.
Was it truly paranoia? He watched TV that terrible day, like all Americans, with a horror that would have been sheer terror had he stayed, as the Twin Towers rumbled down. Not as a pinnacle of terrorism in The City, but as the beginning of things much worse to come.
Miles favorite eight authors are:
8 - Stuart Woods (Mr. Smooth, Positive & Wealthy) 7 - C. J. Box (rapidly becoming world-class) 6/5 - Stephen King (fear) & James Patterson (fast & max person v. him / herself conflict) 4 - Jeffrey Archer (arc of the great story, each with that modern-day O'Henry twist) 3 - Lee Child (knock 'em out justice, the intelligent big guy, urgency through tight description) 2 - Robert Crais (humor and intensity) 1 - J. K. Rowling (possibly the world's best modern writer) ...though Miles has been known to read Danielle Steel when in the mood to feel suicidally sad, or to laugh his way through a Janet Evanovich. And yes, Miles has read all three original Fifty books (but not Grey). Twice.
Miles A. Maxwell -- out of Cheyenne, Wyoming -- is the author of Loss Of Reason, Search For Reason and the forthcoming Finding Reason of the State Of Reason series.

When I finished "Search for Reason" I immediately logged on to Amazon so I couldorder "Finding Reason" and I discovered to my dismay that it isn't available yet. So I will have to wait along with everybody else. This story linealthough disturbing, as we all hope something like this never happens, kept me reading into the wee hours. Its hard to imagine what life wouldbe like if something like this were to happen. I feel the sudden need to prepare a disaster preparedness kit for my family. I was totally enthralled with this book and its characters, and can't wait to see what happens next. Keep up the good work

By Mary Lisa Fitzgerald I'm not exaggerating when I say that I can't wait for the next book in this series to come out. I am dying to know what happens. The author left the book in a great cliffhanger, but I'll never tell. You'll just have to read it for yourself. The book was amazing. This author really put so much into this book. You can tell that a lot of research had to be done, in order to write it. There is, religion, languages, aviation, science, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and medicine in this book. Talk about meaty. This is a DEEP read, but a FUN one. You will not be disappointed at all. This book will make you question and think. It is especially thought provoking considering its connection to today's newsworthy stories in the media. Read the book and you'll see what I mean. This book was so good that I stayed up all night just to finish it. I can't wait to see what else this author has to offer. Also, it says a lot about the book for me to write a review because it's not something I do on a regular basis, unless I have to.

Patton By Cheryl Stout SEARCH FOR REASON is the second book in the STATE OF REASON series. I enjoyed the first book in the series LOSS OF REASON but this offering is much meatier and fills in the characters and the details of the story.Brothers Everon and Franklin are the focus again in book two. A good portion of the book tells of Everon's efforts to get power restored to a portion of the East coast. There were a lot of technical details, which were interesting, but I felt were rather overblown. We (the reader) would have gotten the idea with half the words. And the diagrams included with the text were so small that they were practically unreadable.Franklin tries to figure out the "whys" of the terrible disasters that have hit the East coast of the United States and gets drawn in to many scary scenarios. There is a LOT of information in this second book, with stories that start in Nevada and end up in Pennsylvania, with side trips along the way - to Utah and Iran just to mention a couple.I am thoroughly confused - but in a good way. I can usually figure out where a book is headed early on but with this series I have no idea where the author is headed.Science, electrical engineering, different religions and theology, well-fleshed out characters (good guys and bad), some romance thrown in - mix all these ingredients together and you get a wowser of a tale. There's another cliffhanger of an ending so I hope author Maxwell doesn't take too long to get us book three in the series FINDING REASON, due out sometime this year.
