In her memoir Carry Gorney considers how her own life was shaped by her refugee antecedents’ experience of displacement and reinvention - ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times in the twentieth century. The book includes extracts from her parents’ letters, revealing a historic resentment and suspicion of refugees and a unique picture of the internment camps on the Isle of Man. A neat drip-dry childhood of the fifties in grey northern drizzle is counterbalanced by her aunties’ rainbow knitting, her granny’s cakes and her father’s retreat into music. Wearing rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she takes us through the seventies counter-culture, into the creative and imaginative spaces lying between her peer group of artists and the inner city neighbourhoods where they danced in street processions, made videos and invited children to sculpt the creatures of their dreams. The new millennium and she is a psychotherapist. She sits in a circle with asylum seeker mothers singing lullabies in different languages; a new generation whispers to their English babies in foreign words. This book will speak to anyone who has experienced or observed the effects of displacement and finding a place. It offers a vibrant account of the impulse to create an alternative life-style. Its narrative traces the history of the Community arts movement and what we have lost since its decline. It offers unique insight on healing the fractured lives of young children and speaks to everyone who imagines belonging and dreams of creating community. “Carry Gorney’s memoir spans 50 years from her parent’s escape from Nazi Germany to her life as a community arts activist and psychotherapist. … Written with heart and humour, it speaks of two different experiences by one family and finds a common link between generations.” Dan Carrier, Camden New Journal. “Carry Gorney’s book is more than a memoir: it’s a work of art, exceptionally well written. The drawings alone are in a class of their own.” Howard Spier, Executive Editor AJR Journal. “There is a great physicality about Gorney’s writing…” Michele Hanson, Columnist, the Guardian.

By Barbara Underwood For me, the test of a good autobiography/memoir is how I feel after reading it, and whether the author has become a real person to me. When I finished reading “Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things” I not only felt that I knew the author personally, but almost as if I had lived her life! This surely attests to the skilful writing that seems to comes from the heart and resonates with the reader. Small details, like the snippets of childhood memories we retain, are written simply yet so effectively, that the reader can vividly imagine the moment, the emotions, or the individual. The author’s childhood memories of her parents and relatives are particularly poignant, along with the smells and tastes of the food her parents enjoyed, and social activities such as knitting. While the subject of World War II and Jewish persecution in Nazi Germany could (and has) filled many books, the author only mentions pivotal points in her parents’ life as they manage to flee to England before the outbreak of the war. Important and interesting are other less-publicized events such as how Jews escaping Nazi Germany were treated with suspicion in England, resulting in the internment in England of the author’s father. Fortunately, the letters between her imprisoned father and pregnant mother survived, and they fill many pages in this book, giving a rare and special insight into those circumstances. The feeling of not truly belonging anywhere or to any group of people is one that perhaps many readers can understand, regardless of race or religion, and the second part of the book, focussing on the author’s life as a young adult will resonate with many readers as well. In this second part also, I found that the focus on certain details evokes strong feelings and leaves a vivid mental impression, even if the reader’s youth took place a few decades later. The psychological reaction to our parents’ lives and traumas forges our own path, and this becomes evident as the reader approaches the end of this book. This book is far more than a mere autobiography, therefore, and yet as easy and enjoyable to read as a personal letter from a friend. Memories are recorded in a slightly random manner, with flashbacks, thus adding to the feeling of a more personal and impromptu telling of memoirs. Overall, I found that reading “Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things” transports the reader into another life, which is always a .trademark of a great book!
