"A techno-thriller... far more intimate and human than anything Crichton ever wrote." Brian Braden, author of Chronicles of Fu Xi A synthetic stem cell called a biomite can replace any cell in your body. They are infallible. As our percentages of biomites rise, we become stronger, we become smarter and prettier. We become better. Can we resist the temptation of perfection? Are we still human when our bodies are replaced by synthetic replications? If biomites exist, laws will be imposed to prevent excess and abuse. Those with 50% biomites will no longer be considered human. They will be halfskin. Halfksin: The Vignettes is a compendium of short stories found throughout the Halfskin trilogy, a harbinger of what humanity’s pursuit of perfection may look like. INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR WHAT GENRE DO YOU PREFER? Science fiction, dystopia, technothriller and, to some extent, young adult. I do have a series of novellas in the vampire genre. Yeah, I know. Doesn’t fit. That character, Drayton, came out of nowhere when I was at a community theatre production of Dracula. I figured that an immortal vampire would more likely become compassionate and wise as he grew older. The technothriller Halfskin is similar to vampires in that technology promises immortality and complete control of our bodies. But then what? WHY A SYNTHETIC STEM CELL? Organic life is too nilly-willy. We’re limited by our DNA. Give it to the scientists to perfect this vehicle that carries us around because it is a vehicle. If we no longer have organic bodies, if every one of our cells is replaced by something manmade all the way down to the neurons and synapses, then what are we? What if our world is just a computerized environment, ala The Matrix? Would we know the difference? Look, we’re printing organs today. I’m not, but someone is. Some genius has figured out how to push play and heart or liver or kidney comes down the chute. Halfskin takes the idea into the distant future and explores whether this leads to more happiness or just more of the same. Because more money, more problems. DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER JOB BESIDES AUTHOR? Day job, I’m a college horticulture teacher. Writing is a passion. No plans to change it. WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO? Breathe. WHAT TALENT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE? Omnipresent supergalactic oneness. IF WE HAD A CUSTOM THAT ALLOWED US TO EAT OUR CHILDREN, WHAT KIND OF SAUCE WOULD YOU USE? Ketchup, the miracle condiment. ARE OUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES STEALING OUR SOUL? AND IF SO, DO YOU MAKE OFFERINGS TO YOUR TOASTER? I offer white bread and the toaster gives back crunchy, brown bread. Never doubt a true miracle.

The only downside to this novel is the length (seemed short) and the characters, although fascinating, didn't have lasting substance to them. Their individual stories were short lived.Still, the concepts of advanced technology and the reactions of various characters made this well worth reading. I would definitely read on in this series.

By Lynda Stevens As said on the book cover, this novel comes in the form of a set of vignettes - of quasi-short stories, but all based on a central theme. As we get deeper into the book, the stories and characters are pulled together to create a more consistent narrative, as each builds and reports on earlier characters and their individual stories. And there is more to come: it seems to be something of a fashion at the moment among indie writers - Halfskin will extend into further trilogies. This is clever, imaginary SF, though this snapshot vignette approach to the telling may put of those who prefer more a consistent set of characters and plot. Only much later on do we learn that this is also an alternate-reality story - about how technology, or rather nanotechnology, might have evolved had a certain genius by the name of Wosniak, not turned his attention to the potentials of computer software.Enter the synthetic cell, or biomite. What if there were a cure for cancer and lost limbs could be replaced? What if we did all inhabit a seamy world in which the world wide web found its way into our flesh brains. This last is a premise that has been covered before - and so is the Promethean one that Human beings may well abuse this technology - or take the lazy path to all kinds of instant gratifications or unfair advantage.Either way, this is all, very enjoyable reading and there us no lack of imagination to spare in depicting a new cyber dystopia here. And there is certainly more to come...

Perfectly threaded and thoroughly fascinating storylines By Sheila Deeth Author Tony Bertauski is a master of what-ifs, and the vignettes in Halfskin blend together scarily into a what-if world where the greatest technological advance was in biological chips rather than silicone. But Bertauski’s worlds are never simple, and his questions, like those of George Orwell or Philip Dick, leave the reader with much to ponder. What makes us human? What makes us fast, or clever, or gives us personality? And what’s left if too much of the brain and body are fabricated instead of bestowed by nature? The vignettes draw the reader inexorably forward in time, each introducing a new small twist on a dream that slowly changes into nightmare. Characters are vividly real. Dilemmas are genuinely complex. Short stories are enticingly complete. And the strange world created is one not so very different from our own, like a slightly distorted lens revealing flaws that were hidden before. I’d love to read more.Disclosure: I found a free ecopy and I offer my honest review.

The economy didn't go through the Great Depression - people did. Margaret DuBois grew up in a period of historic deprivation. Her family had to retreat to her grandparents' Ozark farm to survive. The farm patriarch, her grandfather, was an orator - a minister who had once served as a State Legislator. Their home-life differed from most similarly-situated Ozark families in its focus on spiritual duties and the love of learning. Books lined their shelves. Political bombast and pious sermon occupied their dinners. They didn't get up pre-dawn as most farm families did. Hard times drew out the best and worst of human character. As she watched her family cope with all manner of human failing, and unremitting rotten luck, Margaret saw that people are complex and rife with contradictions. In her family's composure through bitter disappointments she saw a strength of character worthy of remembrance. And on that rocky ground where the DuBois family held fast, she hatched her dreams.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. What was it like "back when?" By Marian Maragaret DuBois paints a picture of transitions. Because the Depression sent her family back to her grandfather's farm in the Missouri Ozarks, where it was possible to survive, and even thrive, without much money but with hard work, she spent her childhood in a Victorian household (horsehair sofas and kerosene lamps) that was dominated by her minister-politician-patriarch grandfather, whom she came to love and respect, even though -- as she concludes -- "he was wrong about nearly everything." The chapters are mostly self-contained, written at different times but, overall, illuminating the personal side of those crucial mid-20th century years of Depression and War. when power shifted within families, when children raised on farms and in small towns were called to fight abroad and take jobs far removed from their origins in order to better their lives and those of their families. The Dust Bowl caused a mass migration, followed by the mass exodus from those rural roots to population centers of wartime production. Here we see the personal side of those transitions through the eyes of an adult who remembers what it was like to be a child and a shy adolescent but was always an acute observer of the life around her... And the humor flows throughout. Getting a radio turned out to be a disaster for family peace as Grandfather insisted on arguing with FDR during his broadcast Fireside Chats. Missouri phrases and songs abound. There are tales of courage -- seeing family members facing off with an angry bull left DuBois believing she has no need to travel to Spain to see the bulls run at Pamplona. Tales of loyalty by family, including the animals (Old Pete, her brother's dog). Tales of disappointment, economic and personal. Tales of hope of a better life, through education (oh, the struggle to get to college!), through ingenuity and hard work. Here is the story of a time gone by as seen through the eyes of one who lived it and has lived long enough since to be able to make an assessment of what it meant in the context of the rest of the century. It's a rare view, and an intriguing one.

Engrossing coming of age story during economic hard times By Jane Freeman ROCKY GROUND, a memoir by Margaret DuBois, is a wonderful growing up story of life during the depression, on a farm in the Ozarks. There's humor and also sadness, seen through a child's eyes. She observes, but the adult reader knows more. Sometimes the adult Margaret interjects and explains. But the narrative still flows. Readers will reflect on their own childhoods. This book would be a great book club choice and also lends itself to read-alouds.Available from Amazon or business1@expressive.info

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating memoir By J. Miller Margaret DuBois has created a historical record of a special time and place in America: a farm in the Ozarks during the Great Depression. She brilliantly captures farm life in those years, its pleasures and its disasters. Her vivid characterizations of her family members bring them to life: her grandfather, so unflinchingly true to his principles no matter the cost; her grandmother, isolated by her deafness but nevertheless strong and independent; her father ever in pursuit of self-sufficiency but ever at the mercy of others' treacheries; her mother, diligent and patient and supportive of everyone else's aims; her brother, working so hard to make his dream of higher education come true; and herself, sharing her family's hard times but having the fortitude to find her own way in the world. Her fluid prose captivates the reader as tale after tale unfolds in this memoir, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. We become acquainted with the farm's free-thinking guinea fowl, the docile Guernsey cows and their bellowing male companion, the goats with their cunning teamwork, and the hogs who rid the area of poisonous snakes. The family dynamics are riveting, the effects of world events are fascinating, and the fortitude in the face of adversity is inspiring. It's a book that informs and delights.

A great guide for the professional contemplating social media platforms for greater personal branding By Joe & Sharon Hopkins Sandra D’Souza (2015) makes a compelling argument that professionals and businesses should use social media as a platform to gain positive exposure to greater branding of the individual, a product, or service. Her guide to understanding the customer, establishing key goals and objectives, developing and executing a strategy, through the design process will assist to identify proper platforms that will best suit the individual or business needs. She avoids the technical jargon and provides a straight-forward approach to making social media work for the individual, small business, or large enterprise. As a professional 55 year old male working through a doctoral program, I have argued that social media requires large amounts of time with little benefit. D’Souza (2015) provides ample evidence that social media aids the professional in branding themselves and improving their public profile while enhancing a learning platform. She provides a five step frame work linked to “Six Golden Rules” to assist the novice as well as the experienced social media user to select the proper platforms and then set out to be a productive user. The professional or small business owner intrigued by the idea of social media but unsure of the benefit, or concerned with time and resource demands, or uneasy with potential negative publicity will find Social Media for Baby Boomers (2015) easy to read and abundant with valuable insight.

There is nothing more miraculous, profound, and comforting, than to meet a fellow pilgrim whose company, on the road that we call life ,leaves you inspired, challenged, enlightened, and encouraged. Most of us will not travel the world, or have the extensive work and life experiences that Dr. Gray has had, but his sharing of his, will allow you to experience everything vicariously through his journal pages. This is our Father's World and HE has the whole world in HIS hands. Experience this through "Measuring My Days"!! "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in him." PS. 34:8 Life is too short to miss this fantastic opportunity to travel with AC. Godspeed and be prepared to be profoundly blessed and encouraged.

Gray's Measuring My Days nourishes the reader with life changing words of wisdom as he takes us through the days of his adventurous, interesting and peaceful life. He reminds us that the best of times is now and how precious each moment is. I was motivated to pick up the phone and call the people who I love. The book made me realize that each day is a gift from God and an opportunity for me to become a better and happier person. It also convinced me that peace can be found one person at a time. A very gripping tale of blood lust and a serial killer who can't be caught By Jennifer Wow...this was a very gripping tale of a serial killer - Jack the Ripper known as "Cooper" in the modern world- is determined to keep on committing even more grisly murders. Like a vagabond, he goes from place to place, his gruesome escapades lead him to bank robbery and airplane hijacking. I won't be one to give away the ending but it came with some serious twists and turns to keep the reader anxiously awaiting the next page. Cooper is known as the "Zodiac Killer" to Sherlock Homes; who in this story has a young great-grandson trying to put all the family lineage pieces together. Some of the murders make me think of the infamous David Berkowitz the way Zodiac targeted young couples in situations of solitude. The writing takes a matter-of-fact tone to it; at first I was not sure what age group this story was written for, as I continue I know it is definitely not a juvenile fictional work as the situations are pretty graphic. Well-written but too graphic for a younger audience of readers. The "Zodiac" killer's first murders take place in San Francisco when he targets a young college student on the way to her car at night; from that point on the detectives are caught up in a cat and mouse game in which Zodiac leaves these notes behind that sound almost like misspelled confessionals, bearing a cipher; or his trademark. But every time Homes (known in the modern world as Dr Greystone) and partner Watson think they have made progress Zodiac is always a step above them and he is always gone.I thought the reference to "astragulus" was interesting in that I was told it was a good herb for immunity building-as a side note. I never heard anything about the longevity benefits of it. This herb is apparently being consumed by Holmes, funny thing in the text it is spelled "astralagus"; however I saw the word spelled differently so maybe it's a variation.I never read many mystery novels or the genre much but I think you will find that this is a real page-turner of a tale on a bloodthirsty monster who is not going to go down without a fight when he is on the lam!

This time Sherlock and Jack the Ripper have new identities and new challenges to overcome. Sherlock believes that Jack has kept his promise, but instead he has transformed into the dangerous Zodiac Killer. So many questions need answers as Sherlock races to solve the mystery and catch his nemesis.I love the quick pace of this book. I couldn’t put it down; I just had to read it in one sitting. I love the evolving relationship between Sherlock and Jack. And involving the DB Cooper mystery was fascinating.I love seeing how these pieces of history fit together in the Holy Ghost Writer’s work. I find the concepts unique, playful, and fascinating. I’m excited to see where this cat and mouse game leads us in future works.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Book is a Veritable Literary AND True Crime Buffet By Crystal C. I should begin by stating that my literary tastes skew pretentious. A few questions I ask myself when evaluating whether or not I want to read a book:-Was it written by a Russian during the reign of Nicholas II?-Did the author eventually commit suicide because they were tortured by their art?-Was the entire 1,000-page tome clearly written in a heavily inebriated and/or heroin-induced mental state? If the answer to any of the above is yes: give it to me.So Zodiac Killer: Newly Discovered Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, is not the sort of book I would typically gravitate towards, and I found myself judging it using the same rubric I would typically apply to, for example, David Foster Wallace. Which is to say, I spent half of the book thinking, "Well, the dialogue is wooden, and most of these characters have the exact same personality, and why this aside comment on that character's trim figure...?..." And so on.But that is unfair.Look, you aren't picking up this book for intellectual enrichment. Reasons you are probably picking it up:-You are about to board a plane, and you need that mental vacation to begin posthaste.-You like playfully-written suspense novels.-You're fascinated with serial killers (pro tip: everyone is fascinated with serial killers).-You like a postmodern approach to literature that ties in multiple authors and genres, and then a few real-life occurrences for good measure (seriously, this book is a veritable literary AND true crime buffet. And then, somehow, the Illuminati gets thrown into it, too. Just go with it, man.)-You want to be entertained in two hours or less (this is a quick read).-You are a master at willful suspension of disbelief, and you'd like to test your mastery (an afternoon jaunt from San Francisco to Riverside, California? Sure, why not? Sherlock Holmes is already immortal, so he may as well be able to defy the laws of time-space, too).It seems like I am poking fun at this book, but in seriousness: it's a light (except for those murder parts), entertaining page-turner. You will probably be so occupied while reading it that you'll be completely unaware of any occurrences in the outside world (example: when I came to, I found out that nuclear weapon negotiations with Iran has transpired), and finish it in one sitting. Check it out!

While researching her ancestors Leslie Anne Perry learned her great-grandmother, Catalina Reno, was related to ruthless outlaws who terrorized parts of Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois following the Civil War. The Reno brothers, along with other members of the Reno Gang, committed America’s first peacetime train robbery. Their train robberies, as well as numerous other crimes, caused local citizens in one southern Indiana town to take the law into their own hands—ten members of the gang were hung by vigilantes in three separate hangings. No charges were ever filed in connection with the hangings. [A short nonfiction book of 5,380 words]

But the author restates most of the story from public domain sources. The story of the Reno's is interesting and this could have been told as more of a narrative, not just a flat recitation of the facts. But it does explain who the Reno Gang was. For an overview, this book is sufficient.

In her memoir Carry Gorney considers how her own life was shaped by her refugee antecedents’ experience of displacement and reinvention - ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times in the twentieth century. The book includes extracts from her parents’ letters, revealing a historic resentment and suspicion of refugees and a unique picture of the internment camps on the Isle of Man. A neat drip-dry childhood of the fifties in grey northern drizzle is counterbalanced by her aunties’ rainbow knitting, her granny’s cakes and her father’s retreat into music. Wearing rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she takes us through the seventies counter-culture, into the creative and imaginative spaces lying between her peer group of artists and the inner city neighbourhoods where they danced in street processions, made videos and invited children to sculpt the creatures of their dreams. The new millennium and she is a psychotherapist. She sits in a circle with asylum seeker mothers singing lullabies in different languages; a new generation whispers to their English babies in foreign words. This book will speak to anyone who has experienced or observed the effects of displacement and finding a place. It offers a vibrant account of the impulse to create an alternative life-style. Its narrative traces the history of the Community arts movement and what we have lost since its decline. It offers unique insight on healing the fractured lives of young children and speaks to everyone who imagines belonging and dreams of creating community. “Carry Gorney’s memoir spans 50 years from her parent’s escape from Nazi Germany to her life as a community arts activist and psychotherapist. … Written with heart and humour, it speaks of two different experiences by one family and finds a common link between generations.” Dan Carrier, Camden New Journal. “Carry Gorney’s book is more than a memoir: it’s a work of art, exceptionally well written. The drawings alone are in a class of their own.” Howard Spier, Executive Editor AJR Journal. “There is a great physicality about Gorney’s writing…” Michele Hanson, Columnist, the Guardian.

By Barbara Underwood For me, the test of a good autobiography/memoir is how I feel after reading it, and whether the author has become a real person to me. When I finished reading “Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things” I not only felt that I knew the author personally, but almost as if I had lived her life! This surely attests to the skilful writing that seems to comes from the heart and resonates with the reader. Small details, like the snippets of childhood memories we retain, are written simply yet so effectively, that the reader can vividly imagine the moment, the emotions, or the individual. The author’s childhood memories of her parents and relatives are particularly poignant, along with the smells and tastes of the food her parents enjoyed, and social activities such as knitting. While the subject of World War II and Jewish persecution in Nazi Germany could (and has) filled many books, the author only mentions pivotal points in her parents’ life as they manage to flee to England before the outbreak of the war. Important and interesting are other less-publicized events such as how Jews escaping Nazi Germany were treated with suspicion in England, resulting in the internment in England of the author’s father. Fortunately, the letters between her imprisoned father and pregnant mother survived, and they fill many pages in this book, giving a rare and special insight into those circumstances. The feeling of not truly belonging anywhere or to any group of people is one that perhaps many readers can understand, regardless of race or religion, and the second part of the book, focussing on the author’s life as a young adult will resonate with many readers as well. In this second part also, I found that the focus on certain details evokes strong feelings and leaves a vivid mental impression, even if the reader’s youth took place a few decades later. The psychological reaction to our parents’ lives and traumas forges our own path, and this becomes evident as the reader approaches the end of this book. This book is far more than a mere autobiography, therefore, and yet as easy and enjoyable to read as a personal letter from a friend. Memories are recorded in a slightly random manner, with flashbacks, thus adding to the feeling of a more personal and impromptu telling of memoirs. Overall, I found that reading “Send me a Parcel with a Hundred Lovely Things” transports the reader into another life, which is always a .trademark of a great book!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. great focus, translation, and expression By Frank Fenderbender Bill's translations are accurate and heartfelt, as befits Raoul Vaneigem. He has edited an honest and focused appraisal which I appreciate. Bill is the only translator who doesn't ignore "below the neck" Situationist theory, others preferring to re-edit their one text forever, like careerists. Vaneigem's volumes of untranslated texts, though availed freely through smirkers-of-the-world.org website never draw those others away from their reified Guy Debord, a fate M. Debord would find as evidence of their own spectacularized lives, i.e., their "life"-styles. So, hats off (if wearing one) to dear M. Brown for caring enough about truth, not only in its translatable snapshots but also in its time permuable and roaming relevance. Great work and highly recommended!
