This gripping memoir tells the personal story of a man who has lived at the epicenter of the major events of modern Jewish history. From the ashes of Auschwitz to statehood and the beginning of the ingathering of the exiles, Rabbi Sholom Gold, born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn nearly eight decades ago, has lived through the most traumatic, tragic, and ultimately majestic period in the four-thousand-year saga of the Jewish people. Rabbi Gold chronicles here his relationships and memorable encounters with many of the Torah world s most illustrious personages, including the Stoliner Rebbe, Rav Yaacov Kaminetsky, Rav Yaacov Yitzchok Halevi Ruderman, the Satmar Rebbe, the Brisker Rav, Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank, the Kopycznitzer Rebbe, the Belzer Rebbe, Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook, Rav Schach, the Ponovezher Rav, Rav Amram Blau, Rav Yisroel Gustman, Rav Avraham Pam, and more, as well as the story of sneaking through the closed-off streets of Jerusalem during a military exercise to be (successfully) tested for rabbinic ordination by Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. A passionate advocate for the land of Israel, in which he has lived for thirty years, Rabbi Gold tells of his encounters with prominent Israeli political figures such as Chaim Herzog, Menachem Begin, Yuli Edelstein, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and relates his struggles and political activism both in Israel and abroad to preserve the integrity of the state against the damaging Oslo Accords. Above all a rav and teacher, Rabbi Gold relates many anecdotes from his years in the rabbinate, including a mission into the heart of Soviet Russia to give encouragement to Moscow s beleaguered Jews. With sensitivity, depth, warmth, and plenty of humor, Rabbi Gold opens a fascinating window on the tumultuous and dynamic years of destruction and rebuilding that preceded and followed the founding of the Jewish state, and offers an insider s perspective on life in the land he holds so dear.

Review "Touching Historyshould be read by all.""Touching History is perfectly named. This book is history. It is the history of Rabbi Gold and his family, and it is the history of Judaism in North America - Canada and the United States of America, and of Israel during the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century.""Rabbi Gold brings modern Jewish history to life.""Rabbi Sholom Gold lived through the most fascinating of times, and was aware enough, cognizant enough of what he was seeing and what he was part of, and retells it masterfully.""The book reads as if he is talking. I was able to close my eyes and hear his voice, hear his passion." --Rafi Goldmeier"Life in Israel" (02/26/2015)The story of Sholom Gold is one of love for learning.

Throughout his career Rabbi Gold show love for Eretz Yisroel and love for Torah learning.

One of his greatest achievements is the establishment of learning programmes for adults.

There are numerous inspirational stories interspersed throughout the book. --Jay Levinson, Jewish Tribune (UK)The book is an enjoyable read and difficult to put down...

Today's current events will be tomorrow's history...oftentimes it is clearer when conveyed by eyewitnesses who remember it as current events.

Touching History is an aptly named book.

... not a history book in the classic sense; ...this book is intended to be one man's retelling of his very active, communally involved life as he swam in the historically exciting waters in which he lived.

... a grandfather warmly telling over recent Jewish history from a first-person perspective to the younger generation; it is a light read with a heavy message. --Jerusalem Post Magazine, Ari Zivotofsky

By rivkah30 Rabbi Gold, a world-class religious Zionist, writes his life story in a folksy, accessible tone without literary pretense.Born 70 years ago, Rabbi Gold's life connected with so many important events in Jewish history - the Holocaust, the fight for freedom for Russian Jewry, Oslo, Gush Katif and more. He established a number of Jewish schools, synagogues and other Jewish organizations. And he seems to remember ever single person he ever worked with. The book is full of acknowledgement of the hundreds of teachers, fellow students, colleagues, community leaders and politicians with whom Rabbi Gold carried out his life's work. As a woman reader, I couldn't help but notice how few women played a role in Rabbi Gold's professional life, at least until the last few chapters.Rabbi Gold is a passionate defender of Jews living in the Land of Israel and of the spiritual significance of doing so in our times. Throughout the book, he recreates some of his most memorable speeches and sermons. I was particularly touched by the speech he gave at one of his grandson's weddings. The groom's older brother was fighting in Gaza at the time and he was unable to attend and share in his brother's joy. Rabbi Gold brought comfort to the family with the story of the Biblical brothers Joseph and Benjamin, neither of whom attended the other's wedding.Touched by History is a gentle read that will be best appreciated by those who have connections to Jewish Williamsburg of the 20th century, to the American yeshiva world, to Baltimore, Toronto and West Hempstead, NY and certainly by American Jews who live in Israel today. It's the story of how much one man can accomplish in one lifetime when he is willing to stand up for his principles.

I had been looking forwarded to settling in with the book Friday night of chol hamo'ed, which I did. What I did not know was it would completely capture my attention, keeping me engrossed until 1 30 AM!I, who am close with the Gold family, liked the book for so many reasons - the flowing writing style, the historical information, the geshmakeh (inadequate translation from the Yiddish:savory) stories, the positive - yet not syrupy-sweet - tone, the very real, very open, very human dimension that comes across. And, of course, the perfectly executed humor. I told my wife that the book is all dessert; no need to power through a laborious main course to get to the sweet stuff. It is all the sweet stuff. She has since read and thoroughly enjoyed the book as well. Some things that stood out for me, in no particular order:- the editing was well done. Enough to make the book eminently readable while not being so heavy handed as to hold back at all on the full dose humor and personality. You, as a reader, know very well this is the voice of Rabbi Gold talking. Very positive, upbeat, thankful, hopeful, facetious without being sarcastic. Occasionally critical but never cutting.- the many activities, trips, missions, causes. I didn't always appreciate the very important stuff going on behind the scenes when I dropped in to your home for a good time. These accomplishments, each one of which is a big deal, when viewed in aggregate, make for quite a stunning progress report- I have come across many memoirs and retrospectives where the author claims to have no regrets. To me that stance rings hollow. How can you go through life, being a thinking, caring person who stood up and took action, and not have regrets? Touching History candidly puts forth several regrets that are not only very real and human in and of themselves, but make the whole book that much more credible.- there are many important values contained in the book - perseverance in the face of fear and adversity, standing up for what you believe in, appreciation of family, gaining wisdom from everybody and anybody with whom you have contact, the rewards of maintaining lifelong relationships, etc. etc.- it is no coincidence that three brothers all excelled, each in his own way. This obviously comes from strength, traits and values, contained somewhere deep, deep in the family DNA. The rabbi’s strong recognition and appreciation of this shone through as did his loyalty toward / love of / pride in the unique achievements of each of his brothers. To sum up, I realize the book has special meaning to someone like me, as I know, at a very close and personal level, the characters, and am familiar with, at a visceral level, from my very early youth, the feelings, motivations, hashkafos and principles that underpin the book. Still, since it is so delightful, I am confident it will be a satisfying and compelling read for anyone with a connection to the Jewish nation.
