The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Edward Waldo Emerson

About the Author Herman Melville said that Ralph Waldo Emerson possessed a "self-conceit so intensely intellectual that at first one hesitates to call it by its right name," though he later admitted Emerson was "a great man." Both were probably true. The Sage of Concord gave more than 1500 speeches in his lifetime, and Self-Reliance is probably his most important work.

All of the books with this same blue/marble green/ gold covers are very hard to distinguish / incorrectly marked as being full sets when they're only part of a set. I understand the value in leaving his works in their original context / format, but if you want to get into Emerson and don't know where to start, I STRONGLY recommend "The Annotated Emerson", edited by Mikics. Absolutely incredible book and finally one that I can read and fully understand due to brilliant footnotes/annotations from an extremely knowledgable editor. Truly the best out there, and I've seen many, many renditions of Emerson. I'm finally satisfied... Going to write a review for 'Annotated' now and I normally don't write reviews, but I'm just blown away by it. If you want the complete, untouched set in their at-times-difficult-to-read format, then you can buy the "complete works..." series, but it appears you'll have to buy all of them, but it's hard to decipher which ones on amazon actually go together / complete the set. Good luck.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good sequel By Kindle Customer I was quite happy with the development of the characters in this book. Can't wait to see what happens to Donovan in the next book.I was a little surprised with some of the characters reactions and some times I thought there was too little sympathy with the people who have died. Then I get disapproved later in the story. I like being kept on my toes and hope the next book is as good.

A lot of very similar settings and character other books like Harry Potter, and the name of the wind. Still a good book, but with holes and using other people's ideas for situations it seemed like. Maybe I'm wrong, but still worth reading.

By Human Touch Media, LLC My small start-up had what we thought was a great looking website, but we weren’t getting much traction. This book gave us some great tips and a lot of “a-ha!” moments. We learned a lot about how a great blog and great images can greatly improve our SEO. It’s nice to have a fabulously designed website, but if no one finds it doesn’t do you much good. After reading Ms. Livingston’s book, we went back to square one and completely revamped our content and it is starting to show!

I really liked the "spy" technique she mentioned because it allows me to see what my competition is doing; how much they are spending; and what their online ads look like. Great information!

I like harem books By J.P. de León I'm getting the impression that this serie books are getting shorter and shorter... and ok, I like harem books, but this is getting ridiculous. If the next book don't have a better content and more pages, I'm drooping this serie, too much cost for to lite content and decreasing quality.

It was okay, but at this point, the neverending parade of women is coming off as gratuitous for me. I'm not sure Im going to buy the next book

But Jackson does need to make the books longer $3 for a 90 page book is a little much. I enjoy the overall story line and the one on one battles are well written and easily grasped and imagined. Again my only problem is the length of the books. It took me less than an hour to read this one.

In India, one woman is murdered every hour by her husband's family for a dowry. The Burning Bride follows the story of Uma, a newlywed woman. She starts her new life with many dreams. However, her dreams turn into nightmares when her parents are unable to fulfil the dowry demands made by Madhu, her mother-in-law. The heaven she had imagined transforms into a hell, and the worst part is; there appears to be no escape. Violence against women is high in India but the irony is that Indian people worship women in the forms of many goddesses. The most commonly worshipped goddess is Durga who has nine forms. Therefore The Burning Bride is told through nine women's perspectives. The multiple perspectives highlights social, psychological and cultural factors which allow the dowry system to claim so many lives every year. At least 10% of the profits made from the sales of The Burning Bride will support the Asian Circle to fund Oxfam projects to end domestic violence in India.

The central story revolves around an archaic practice known as the dowry.A dowry is given by the bride's family in the form of money or gifts to the groom as part of the marriage contract. Although the giving and receiving of a dowry has been illegal for decades, it is a deeply ingrained custom in a culture that is millennia old.Uma marries into a family who doesn't possess the sense of honor most Indians have. They extort money from her parents and when the money is gone, the bride is considered of no more use. That is when the death threats begin. One element of the story that really impressed me was it's multi-character cast. The author did a wonderful job of creating numerous, yet distinct and believable characters. The author also forces the reader to connect with them, pulling out an array of emotions.Although there are many characters and subplots, the author manages to keep the reader's attention with the plot's quick pacing and easy to read style. Yet, they never glossed over pertinent information to achieve this effect.Overall, The Burning Bride is a compelling and gripping novel. I had to keep reading, needing to know what was going to happen to the protagonist. Yet, at the same time, I was caught up in the history, culture and story of the moment. Need I say more?

Uma’s family have already given Madhu, her mother-in-law, a dowry (the payment that the bride’s family make to the groom’s family for the wedding). But when Uma moves in with Madhu, Vijay and their family, Madhu increases the pressure on Uma and her parents for further dowry payments. The story, released on International Women’s Day, is told from the point of view of nine different women, including Uma and Madhu. It provides a fascinating insight into the practice of dowry which is, amazingly, regularly still expected despite being made illegal many years ago. Without wanting to give away too many spoilers, the book covers a range of controversial issues including violence towards women. The fact that it is told from the perspectives of both the victim and the perpetrator gives this book its strength. As Uma’s life becomes increasingly difficult, it is interesting to see how the other characters rationalise their behaviour in their own minds. The dynamics of the relationship between Uma and her mother-in-law, Madhu, are particularly compelling. The Burning Bride is a thought provoking, absorbing read, with a real focus on character development. I really loved Part V, it was the perfect ending. Highly recommended.

I was deeply affected by the story -how the dowry system is destroying women's lives and is still widespread in spite of being illegal. Uma's story had me crying in parts. Her dreams of a happy, married life are not fulfilled as the torture starts and continues by the mother in law demanding more and more dowry. The author has skilfully woven all the characters to make an excellent read. One day I started reading in bed at 11p.m. and when I next looked at the clock it was 2 a.m. -I had been so engrossed in the story.I have now bought the paper copy and am going to re-read it.Highly recommended. !

Review "Risk and security are as critical as ever in enterprise social media. Phil Mennie's book has never been more timely, and I've not come across a more comprehensive, accessible and example-loaded book as this. This has to be the indispensable guide in this important area." (Paul Levy, Senior Research Fellow, University of Brighton Centre for Research in Innovation Management (CENTRIM))"As we all become more integrated with the global platform of the Internet, we need to change our perspectives and re-think how we work. Phil asks the tough questions and he has plenty of good answers. He is a good navigator through the potential hazards that social media presents to large organizations. Buy this book and don't just pass it on to compliance. These issues matter to the whole organization." (Justin Hunt, Founder The Social Media Leadership Forum)

About the Author Phil Mennie is PwC's Global Social Media Risk and Governance leader, helping his clients harness the power of social media through good governance and risk management. Interesting By Autamme_dot_com There is risk to almost everything in business and social media is no exception, so here is a book that promises to help the reader manage such risks within their enterprise. It certainly is a different take on a familiar theme, as too many social media books tend to gloss over or downplay the risks other than the likelihood of getting a negative press. Doing social media need not be burdensome, yet it can be wise to have some “ground rules” in place. It is not just a case of watching what you say; some communications might arguably be market sensitive and thus the whole panoply of disclosure requirements become relevant. Make a mistake? Maybe it is not enough to delete it… you might need to delete it yet retain a copy. Especially if lawyers or regulators get involved. So this book was quite a welcome, refreshing read and not at all dry and fusty as you might imagine by its title! The author takes you carefully through the whole process, from analysing potential risk and planning your social media interactions to more practical issues such as what to do when problems strike. The text is backed up by real-world examples from many top international companies.Clearly there are some limitations: this book cannot advise you about every bit of legislation that could affect your company, as laws vary from country to country, yet it will give you enough ammunition to go looking into what may apply to you. Even multi-jurisdictional dilemmas are covered. It is better to be forewarned and forearmed. Whilst this book is clearly aimed at the larger company, there is still a fair amount of information that can be relevant or of interest to the smaller company – it just may need a bit of downscaling and interpretation. If you operate in a regulated industry it is possible that there are already mandatory compliance rules concerning your use of social media, although a lot of this can just be an extension of existing custom and practice. Yet still quite a few sectors have not got themselves organised and it seems that “common sense” as a policy is not necessarily in vogue. It might be better to try and have a policy ready. It need not be onerous and it could be a lifesaver. Many employees can form a bit of a blind spot when it comes to social media and whilst they don’t intentionally mean to harm the company, their lack of thought or consideration of the situation can mean that problems find them and your company. So it is better to have a clear set of rules about who can be active on social media and how such communications are used.Reduce the risk and boost the benefit. What is there not to like? This book will help you ensure that your company’s social media presence is less traumatic. It can’t get you Facebook “likes” or Twitter “followers” but it might stop the odd lawsuit or two plus it may keep your social media followers loyal by doing the right thing. In conclusion, an interesting book that manages to make an important yet uninteresting subject interesting. Just like insurance, you hope never to need to claim on its coverage, yet it is wise to ensure you have sought to analyse all risk and implemented damage limitation strategies ahead of time.

Here's How to Handle It By Steven Brock The most formidable barrier to a business achieving a successful social media presence is the lack of a risk reduction plan. Because there are so many stakeholders with differing agendas, the lack of a social media governance strategy can turn a small error into a major crisis.Risk reduction is much more than responding to negative comments on consumer opinion sites such as Yelp. Minnie's new book (Kogan Page, $37.95) is a comprehensive guide to formulating and constructing a set of policies and tools for handling risks in five areas: Reputational, Information Security, Operational, Financial, and Regulatory Compliance. Using case studies and best-practice results, many of which have been discussed in my blogs, the book identifies the ways stakeholders can respond to information security breakdowns, fraud, marketing blunders, crisis incidents, data theft, and the lack of compliance with regulatory requirements. It is gratifying to see Mennie’s agreement that proper moderation is one of the most successful ways of reducing risk.Occasionally, Mennie spends too much time developing models of strategic approaches, such as how to engage the support of leaders at the top of an organization, and too-often, the result of a case study was a termination of the social media effort instead of addressing the issue publicly. But overall, "Social Media Risk and Governance" is a clear map that walks you through the social media minefield and shows you how to disarm each one. When you face your first issue, and you will, the preparations you learn here will help you minimize the damage.

This gripping memoir tells the personal story of a man who has lived at the epicenter of the major events of modern Jewish history. From the ashes of Auschwitz to statehood and the beginning of the ingathering of the exiles, Rabbi Sholom Gold, born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn nearly eight decades ago, has lived through the most traumatic, tragic, and ultimately majestic period in the four-thousand-year saga of the Jewish people. Rabbi Gold chronicles here his relationships and memorable encounters with many of the Torah world s most illustrious personages, including the Stoliner Rebbe, Rav Yaacov Kaminetsky, Rav Yaacov Yitzchok Halevi Ruderman, the Satmar Rebbe, the Brisker Rav, Rav Tzvi Pesach Frank, the Kopycznitzer Rebbe, the Belzer Rebbe, Rav Tzvi Yehuda Kook, Rav Schach, the Ponovezher Rav, Rav Amram Blau, Rav Yisroel Gustman, Rav Avraham Pam, and more, as well as the story of sneaking through the closed-off streets of Jerusalem during a military exercise to be (successfully) tested for rabbinic ordination by Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. A passionate advocate for the land of Israel, in which he has lived for thirty years, Rabbi Gold tells of his encounters with prominent Israeli political figures such as Chaim Herzog, Menachem Begin, Yuli Edelstein, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and relates his struggles and political activism both in Israel and abroad to preserve the integrity of the state against the damaging Oslo Accords. Above all a rav and teacher, Rabbi Gold relates many anecdotes from his years in the rabbinate, including a mission into the heart of Soviet Russia to give encouragement to Moscow s beleaguered Jews. With sensitivity, depth, warmth, and plenty of humor, Rabbi Gold opens a fascinating window on the tumultuous and dynamic years of destruction and rebuilding that preceded and followed the founding of the Jewish state, and offers an insider s perspective on life in the land he holds so dear.

Touching History: From Williamsburg to Jerusalem, by Rabbi Sholom Gold

Review "Touching Historyshould be read by all.""Touching History is perfectly named. This book is history. It is the history of Rabbi Gold and his family, and it is the history of Judaism in North America - Canada and the United States of America, and of Israel during the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century.""Rabbi Gold brings modern Jewish history to life.""Rabbi Sholom Gold lived through the most fascinating of times, and was aware enough, cognizant enough of what he was seeing and what he was part of, and retells it masterfully.""The book reads as if he is talking. I was able to close my eyes and hear his voice, hear his passion." --Rafi Goldmeier"Life in Israel" (02/26/2015)The story of Sholom Gold is one of love for learning.

Throughout his career Rabbi Gold show love for Eretz Yisroel and love for Torah learning.

One of his greatest achievements is the establishment of learning programmes for adults.

There are numerous inspirational stories interspersed throughout the book. --Jay Levinson, Jewish Tribune (UK)The book is an enjoyable read and difficult to put down...

Today's current events will be tomorrow's history...oftentimes it is clearer when conveyed by eyewitnesses who remember it as current events.

Touching History is an aptly named book.

... not a history book in the classic sense; ...this book is intended to be one man's retelling of his very active, communally involved life as he swam in the historically exciting waters in which he lived.

... a grandfather warmly telling over recent Jewish history from a first-person perspective to the younger generation; it is a light read with a heavy message. --Jerusalem Post Magazine, Ari Zivotofsky

By rivkah30 Rabbi Gold, a world-class religious Zionist, writes his life story in a folksy, accessible tone without literary pretense.Born 70 years ago, Rabbi Gold's life connected with so many important events in Jewish history - the Holocaust, the fight for freedom for Russian Jewry, Oslo, Gush Katif and more. He established a number of Jewish schools, synagogues and other Jewish organizations. And he seems to remember ever single person he ever worked with. The book is full of acknowledgement of the hundreds of teachers, fellow students, colleagues, community leaders and politicians with whom Rabbi Gold carried out his life's work. As a woman reader, I couldn't help but notice how few women played a role in Rabbi Gold's professional life, at least until the last few chapters.Rabbi Gold is a passionate defender of Jews living in the Land of Israel and of the spiritual significance of doing so in our times. Throughout the book, he recreates some of his most memorable speeches and sermons. I was particularly touched by the speech he gave at one of his grandson's weddings. The groom's older brother was fighting in Gaza at the time and he was unable to attend and share in his brother's joy. Rabbi Gold brought comfort to the family with the story of the Biblical brothers Joseph and Benjamin, neither of whom attended the other's wedding.Touched by History is a gentle read that will be best appreciated by those who have connections to Jewish Williamsburg of the 20th century, to the American yeshiva world, to Baltimore, Toronto and West Hempstead, NY and certainly by American Jews who live in Israel today. It's the story of how much one man can accomplish in one lifetime when he is willing to stand up for his principles.

I had been looking forwarded to settling in with the book Friday night of chol hamo'ed, which I did. What I did not know was it would completely capture my attention, keeping me engrossed until 1 30 AM!I, who am close with the Gold family, liked the book for so many reasons - the flowing writing style, the historical information, the geshmakeh (inadequate translation from the Yiddish:savory) stories, the positive - yet not syrupy-sweet - tone, the very real, very open, very human dimension that comes across. And, of course, the perfectly executed humor. I told my wife that the book is all dessert; no need to power through a laborious main course to get to the sweet stuff. It is all the sweet stuff. She has since read and thoroughly enjoyed the book as well. Some things that stood out for me, in no particular order:- the editing was well done. Enough to make the book eminently readable while not being so heavy handed as to hold back at all on the full dose humor and personality. You, as a reader, know very well this is the voice of Rabbi Gold talking. Very positive, upbeat, thankful, hopeful, facetious without being sarcastic. Occasionally critical but never cutting.- the many activities, trips, missions, causes. I didn't always appreciate the very important stuff going on behind the scenes when I dropped in to your home for a good time. These accomplishments, each one of which is a big deal, when viewed in aggregate, make for quite a stunning progress report- I have come across many memoirs and retrospectives where the author claims to have no regrets. To me that stance rings hollow. How can you go through life, being a thinking, caring person who stood up and took action, and not have regrets? Touching History candidly puts forth several regrets that are not only very real and human in and of themselves, but make the whole book that much more credible.- there are many important values contained in the book - perseverance in the face of fear and adversity, standing up for what you believe in, appreciation of family, gaining wisdom from everybody and anybody with whom you have contact, the rewards of maintaining lifelong relationships, etc. etc.- it is no coincidence that three brothers all excelled, each in his own way. This obviously comes from strength, traits and values, contained somewhere deep, deep in the family DNA. The rabbi’s strong recognition and appreciation of this shone through as did his loyalty toward / love of / pride in the unique achievements of each of his brothers. To sum up, I realize the book has special meaning to someone like me, as I know, at a very close and personal level, the characters, and am familiar with, at a visceral level, from my very early youth, the feelings, motivations, hashkafos and principles that underpin the book. Still, since it is so delightful, I am confident it will be a satisfying and compelling read for anyone with a connection to the Jewish nation.

One thing I like about this book is that you will see reference to some characters from some of her other books in this book. Don’t fear if you have not read any of the previous books for this is a standalone. But it was amazing to see how the author brought to light that we live in such a small world. I think that it was a perfect book for Halloween. We often talk about what movies we will watch for Halloween but very rarely do we talk about what books we will read that will be fitting for this time of year, which I can find some what sad. Books are such a big part of my life and feel like it can bring so much to our lives.Once you meet the characters in this book you will fall in love with most of them. Might hate one or two as well. River was a good witch. Due to the fact that most people believe rumors and draw the wrong conclusions River kept that part of her life a secret. River was a beautiful plus size woman. She had this spark and spirit you loved to see in a person.Zacarias aka Zac was this handsome neighbor. It was hard to keep your eyes off of him especially when he was out mowing the yard without a shirt. Zac had secrets as well. He was not only handsome and well-built but he was a jaguar shifter. He did not share this secret with too many people. You never know what would happen if people started believing shifters were out there. Now Lucia was a character I hated. With ever good story you have to have a villain and Lucia made a good one. Sorry I don’t think I will tell too much about her. I think I will leave it to you to have to read to uncover Lucia’s dark secrets. I am sure you will hate her as much as I do.Zac never thought he would never be able to love again. Then River came into his life and surprising it awoke something in his Jaguar. His animal side saw that she was their true mate. Zac and River have so many secrets. Yip, there is more that River is keeping a secret then she is a witch, but sorry you will have to read the book to find out. How will each of them handle the truth? Will they feel betrayed? Will they embrace each other?

This fun holiday read is light-hearted, but also packs a suspenseful punch. The pacing is great, as the characters are well-drawn and loveable. (Or hate-able in one case.)I adore Zac. He might just be my favorite shifter in the whole bunch. Fun loving and sexy, and (even though I'm not a fan of cats) there's something adorable about a guy who worries about the stray kitty. And who looks past a gal's physical body to see who she really is, and falls in love with the woman, not the body.River reminds me of someone who is a good friend first, generous and fun loving, who powers through her insecurities to be there for and with the man she falls in love with. And she kicks ass, when she needs to. And yes, she needs to. No spoilers from me, though.I have a favorite scene that would count as a spoiler if I shared it, but it has to do with the stray kitty. I thought it was not only cute and sweet, but perfect for the story. If you are looking for a great Halloween story, this is a smart, sexy, quick read that will leave you satisfied--if a little hungry for sweets.

It drives my dad nuts I’m such a goody two shoes, but the fact that I’m a virgin makes smoke pour from his ears. See, I’m determined to save myself for love, but daddy dear, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. Would it kill you to sin a little? Maybe he’ll get his wish because I met an intriguing hunk last night in my bar. Could he be the one? He certainly melts my panties like marshmallows over the coals of Hell, but do I dare trust him? My last boyfriend thought he’d gain infamy by killing me. He’s infamous all right. Dad had him mounted on a wall, his version of modern art titled, ‘Touch my baby girl and die’. Cute in a twisted way. My love life isn’t the only thing I've got to worry about. There’s someone threatening the denizens of Hell, and while my daddy says to not worry my pretty little head about it, I an involved because whoever is behind the attacks keeps coming after me. Bring it. I’m not afraid. Being a princess of Hell means that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around. It’s what keeps my ass looking great. Nothing in my life is ever simple, and I blame that on my dad, Lucifer. Assassination attempts, hellhounds, and a rebellion in Hell? A piece of cake compared to the turmoil in my heart. No one ever told me love would be the toughest battle of all.

By Emily Heisler Muriel is the devil's daughter, the daughter who is a constant embarrassment and despite her father, Lucifer's, constant pushing to be bad, she just isn't bad enough. Muriel lives on the human plain as owner of Nexus bar which is a haven to others like her, most have no clue as to who she really is though. There is also something very special about Muriel, she still is a virgin and holding out for love. When Auric walks into her bar, she feels that he maybe the one she has been waiting for. Auric however is evasive about who he is and with hell in turmoil and trying to take down her father, Muriel is a target of the demons. Auric is by her side but once she figures out who he really is will she be able to keep him by her side?Very fun. I wasn't sure how I would like this one, has been on my TBA for awhile. Loved her interaction with her dad, they had a humorous banter going on. Auric was mysterious, totally alpha and highly intriguing. Great read, look forward to reading more in this series.

By Kindle Customer Raised in hell from the age or five, Muriel learned how to fight, lie, sin, and bargain with the Devil. She learned how to seduce someone by the way she dressed and acted by her succubus sisters. But the one thing she never did was give up her virginity to just anyone. Now someone has struck her fancy and he even has passed most if her tests, unfortunately he is hiding something. And as bad as that is, someone is out to change the rules in hell and on the top if the list is to kill the Princess if Hell.Auric is a fallen Angel who is trying to get his wings back; but to do that he must kill or rid the world if something evil. He has heard that Lucifers daughter hangs out at a bar called Nexus and he plans to kill her and regain his wings. But that was before he met Muriel. Can Lucifers daughter and a fallen Angel have a relationship? Can they figure out why everyone is trying to kill Muriel? Will Lucifer allow Auric to live?

Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back. Traversing this lonely territory is Makina, a young woman who knows only too well how to survive in a violent, macho world. Leaving behind her life in Mexico to search for her brother, she is smuggled into the USA carrying a pair of secret messages - one from her mother and one from the Mexican underworld.

Signs Preceding the End of the World, by Yuri Herrera

Review "Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist. His spare, poetic narratives and incomparable prose read like epics compacted into a single perfect punch – they ring your bell, your being, your soul. Signs Preceding the End of the World delivers a darkly mythological vision of the U.S. as experienced by the 'not us' that is harrowing and fierce. The profoundly dignified, mind-boggling Makina, our guide and translator, is the heroine who redeems us all: she is the Truth." Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name"Yuri Herrera must be a thousand years old. He must have travelled to hell, and heaven, and back again. He must have once been a girl, an animal, a rock, a boy, and a woman. Nothing else explains the vastness of his understanding." Valeria Luiselli, author of Faces in the Crowd"Herrera never forgets the turbulent and moving humanity of his protagonist: adroit, angry, ineluctable, Makina is destined to become one of the essential characters of Mexico’s new literature . . . Herrera creates a radically new language . . . and condenses into a few pages what other authors need hundreds to convey." Jorge Volpi, author of In Search of Klingsor"Yuri Herrera's Signs Preceding the End of the World is a masterpiece, a haunting and moving allegory about violence and the culture built to support and celebrate that violence. Of the writers of my generation, the one I most admire is Yuri Herrera." Daniel Alarcón, author of At Night We Walk in Circles"Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera confirms his status as a storyteller skilled at creating intense storylines and using original language. It is as adept at depicting wretched conditions as it is of elevating the humble and everyday to symbolic dimensions. And that symbolism, to be sure, has something of the Kafkaesque." Arturo García Ramos, ABC"It’s fair to say that Yuri Herrera follows in the footsteps of compatriot Juan Rulfo, perhaps the master par excellence of creating limbos, spectral spaces in which the characters—real Schrödinger’s cats—reside halfway between the living and the dead." Javier Moreno, Quimera"The book amazes with the precise and persuasive beauty of its words. New words are created or transformed in order to tell what cannot be told." María José Obiol, El País"[T]his marvellously rich, slim novel is working on many levels . . . Herrera’s great achievement lies in elevating the harsh epic of “crossing” to the “other side” to soaring myth. There are allusions to Odysseus, Orpheus and the Styx, the river of Greek mythology that was a border to the Underworld; as well as Mesoamerican stories of shapeshifting and rebirth . . . Herrera’s metaphors grasp the freedom, and the alarming disorientation, of transition and translation . . . Translator Lisa Dillman has found a language both blunt and lyrical for Herrera’s many neologisms." Maya Jaggi, The Guardian"Short, suspenseful . . . outlandish and heartbreaking." New York Times"Herrera’s writing is poetic and defamiliarizing; translator Lisa Dillman has done well to capture his neologisms, which shift the setting into the surreal . . . In this legend-rich book, to immigrate is to enter forever the land of the shades." Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal"Indeed, the nine short chapters tell a very straightforward quest story, and Herrera plants dangerous criminals and vigilant border patrollers around every corner. But it’s the imagery, by turns moving and nightmarish, that makes this brief book memorable . . . This is a haunting book that delivers a strange, arresting experience." Publishers Weekly"Francisco Goldman’s declaration on the cover of this book, that Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist, sold me. I admire Goldman’s own work, so the recommendation couldn’t have come from a more trusted source." Jonathon Sturgeon, Flavorwire "This is a gravity greater than earth's norm. Incidents, phrasings that suggest the novel could shift to another realm continue. They are pregnant with potentiality, and tension of potentiality is one of life's great pleasures, even, especially, in the discomfort that comes with it. It creates only one of the ways that Signs Preceding the End of the World holds you in rapture . . . Signs is a novel of language, meant to be translated because it is so aware of the journeys language takes, from one to another, and within their boundaries." P.T. Smith, Bookslut"This is a gorgeous, crisp little thing. And although Signs . . . is no epic – accounting for chapter breaks it clocks in at under 100 short pages – Yuri Herrera has managed to achieve such extraordinary scope, of space and meaning, without any sense of hurry or clutter … Signs... is an important work, given the tenor of the immigration debate in the US and internationally. Herrera and Makina make a mockery of old-order American patriotism, which is easy to do but tough to actually pull off. The whole book is in fact a tiny exercise in bold and clever writing done with verve." Angus Sutherland, The Skinny"[A] short, brutal, urgent missive of a book . . . Herrera’s prose, as translated by Lisa Dillman, has some of McCarthy’s doomy intonations, his terse impressionism, and his obvious debts to Beckett, Hemingway and Faulkner . . . There’s the same nervy hovering around the edge of allegory and never quite committing to the jump. And the landscape, of course, is the same … But Herrera is—well—better . . . Herrera writes literature. Signs Preceding packs a fractal complexity into its furiously concentrated sentences; it’s slangy, impish, iterative, slightly manic even at its saddest. Herrera has everything McCarthy doesn’t: humour, kindness, politics that don’t stink." Pete Mitchell, The Quietus"Signs Preceding the End of the World is filled with layers of meaning and symbolism, with Herrera’s brilliant command of visual metaphors effortlessly weaving together a host of narrative threads … his use of complex symbolism throughout, and his gift for transforming abstract idioms and metaphors into concrete images makes Signs Preceding the End of the World a worthy examination of what it is to ‘cross the border." — Debjani Biswas-Hawkes, Literateur"Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of the most arresting novels to be published in Spanish in the last ten years. Yuri Herrera does not simply write about the border between Mexico and the United States and those who cross it. He explores the crossings and translations people make in their minds and language as they move from one country to another, especially when there’s no going back." Literalab"Yuri Herrera is one of Mexico’s proudest literary exports, and his Signs Preceding the End of the World … reads like scripture, the received words of an all-knowing wise man." Jane Graham, The Big Issue"Perky crowd-funded publishers & Other Stories are rapidly gaining a name for unearthing hidden gems of world literature and this novel by Mexican author Yuri Herrera can only enhance that reputation. Set on the Mexican/US border, it tells a deceptively simple tale that is simultaneously beguiling and harrowing . . . In nine short chapters and barely 100 pages, Herrera gives us the beating heart of his protagonist. Resourceful and feisty, Makina pursues her twin tasks with determination but with a shrewd appreciation of her chances of success." Peter Whittaker, New Internationalist"The story’s tough young heroine is Makina . . . The author has created Makina both street-smart and observant and we can see how she is capable of defending herself. We hear too, in her inner voice, the by-play of the two languages, what she calls ‘latin’ and ‘anglo’, and how they can fuse into a third with varying proportions according to circumstances . . . Talented, polyglot translator Lisa [Dillman] has risen to the challenge by creating a language that is not jarringly americanised and still conveys the thought processes of a latin-tongued protagonist in an exciting English translation. This is another example of the sterling work of the publisher & Other Stories." Michael Johnston, Akanos Publishing"In Signs Preceding the End of the World, Yuri Herrera has given Spanish-language literature the code we needed to name the birth of the new border cultures; the creation of a new world that is changeable, volatile, sweet and terrible." Ignacio Padilla"Both author and translator deserve praise for creating and successfully interpreting this distinctive voice, which stays with you long after the book is finished." Workshy Fop"Herrera has written a novel that connects the contemporary with the timeless." Jason DeYoung, 3:am"Herrera’s work is a double edged sword, poetic for its sparseness, but leaving the reader hungry for more. A highly-rewarding gulp of a novella, jam-packed with all the intrigue of an epic." Eloise Stevens, Sounds and Colours"It might be a re-telling of the Odyssey at the Mexican border." Janet Potter, The Millions"Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World is one of those rare volumes that manages to explore language in a new way, tell a compelling story, and create memorable characters all at the same time . . . The author’s immense talent is evident in each page, in just about every sentence of the novel . . . The author employs language and a literary perspective you won’t soon forget, his images haunting like a dream." Alina Cohen, The Rumpus"Stunning . . . It’s not the story itself, but Herrera’s brilliant telling of it, his ability to capture his subject’s thoughts, fears, and desires and so eloquently convey all that she’s experiencing, that will leave you spellbound, aching for more." Typographical era"To write in such a short and simple style, yet to deliver something as moving and memorable takes great skill." David Dickinson, The Journal "The narrative invites reflection on the migrant experience and cultural difference; it also supplies the excitement of an adventure with gangsters, guns and false leads . . . Yuri Herrera combines a dreamlike setting with vigorous style." Anthony Cummins, Times Literary Supplement"Two words: Read it. In nine short chapters you encounter all the magic of Alice in Wonderland, the darkness of Dante’s Inferno, the dystopia of McCarthy’s The Road … The language is wonderful, at times completely original, to capture the feel of the original." JM Schreiber for Guardian Books Blog"There’s grit, and there’s an attention to detail, but reality drifts in through filters throughout. It gets under your skin in weird ways." Tobias Carroll, Vol1Brooklyn"A profoundly important book, and one of the few such works to also have the distinction of being a profoundly enjoyable book." Pop Matters"In its hundred-odd pages, Signs Preceding the End of the World manages to be many things at once: an allegory, a dark myth, an epic, a compelling meditation on language." Adam Levy, Music and Literature"This is a novel of carefully rendered details, given to the reader gracefully, as if they are simple or casual observations . . . The brilliance of this novel is that, as grounded as it is in physical experiences, it is this psychological space that it most inhabits . . . A novel whose thinness belies its depth, Signs Preceding the End of the World makes me rejoice that more of Herrerra’s work will soon be published for English readers. It is such a blessing that this work, first published in Spanish six years ago, has made the crossing." Literary Review US"Signs is full of exhilarating moments, sharp, economic turns, both at plot and sentence level . . . Personal and expansive, dense but compact, Signs Preceding the End of the World offers its readers a timeless and timely epic in miniature." Biblioklept"A dazzling little thing, containing so much more than the width of its spine should allow. I am in awe-filled love with its heroine: Makina is a vibrantly real presence in a shadowy world of constant threat; her voice perfectly rendered; her unflappable poise tested, but never broken." Gayle Lazda, London Review Bookshop, London

Makina is the reluctant cross-border traveler and heroine. She is tough but passive when need be. Really, she is Clint Eastwood encapsulated in the form of a young woman navigating a border crossing. The writing style is lyrical and there are elements of magic, but the use of the vernacular keeps the story current and relatable. I love the lack of quotation marks in the story. Someone smarter than me will have to explain how this moves the story/journey along, but to me it made the book read more like poetry. How deep will you plunge into this book? 114 pages later and I've adopted the term "verse" as used in the translation of the book, like you pick up particular words and phrases from a good friend. Ok, stop reading this review, and read the book!

Others are soft and shift, they meander in attitude at the river’s edge, easy to cross, when no one cares. Still many are not obviously one or the other, like the vague but definitive line that separates Mexico from its northern neighbor the USA.Yuri Herrera’s nine brief chapters in “Signs Preceding the End of the World,” explores the US – Mexican border in magical, mythical and meaningful ways. Herrera’s protagonist Makina, stands as a female Orpheus, thrust into the underworld in both literal and figurative ways as she makes a crossing north in search of her lost brother. Her journey is aided by the host of characters one might expect to find in such journeys; boatmen, dealers, coyotes, thieves, border guards, “patriots,” and the ever present anonymous yet sympathetic peoples who have survived this contemporary middle passage and understand her journey’s goal. They help their sister on her way.Makina’s intelligence, bilingualism and street smarts facilitate her quest, as she is able to translate and negotiate the many riddles and personalities that aim to confound her mission. She knows when to fight, when to duck, and when to cross her fingers. The story’s Sphinx, arrives in the guise of a patriot vigilante border patrol, whose virulent hatred of migrants, is subdued with the direct forceful confusion of her crossings’ explanation.Makina offers the patriot his riddle’s answer complete with its neither yes nor no ambiguous edge:“We are to blame for this destruction, we who don’t speak your tongue and don’t know how to keep quiet either. We who didn’t come by boat, who dirty up your doorsteps with our dust, who break your barbed wire. We who came to take your jobs, who dream of wiping your s***, who long to work all hours. We who fill your shiny clean streets with the smell of food, who brought you violence you’d never known, who deliver your dope, who deserve to be chained by neck and feet. We who are happy to die for you, what else could we do? We, the ones who are waiting for who knows what. We, the dark, the short, the greasy, the shifty, the fat, the anemic. We the barbarians.”Herrera’s story is a provocatively rich read, enigmatic and forceful. The English translation is wonderfully navigated by Lisa Dilman who has provided, and explained at story’s end, an earnest gist of the Mexican vernacular Spanish, avoiding the pitfalls of direct word for word matching, instead suggesting meanings into the English she offers as a poetic inquisitive take on Herrera’s contemporary story. This a good book, and then some.

By D Cluster A tremendously inventive, unusual, and affecting view of Mexico-US border crossing in the broadest sense of that term -- and an adventure in mysterious realms that I couldn't put down -- and a heroine I won't forget. I read it first in the Spanish original, which translator Lisa Dillman does a highly impressive job of re-imagining in English. A great read.

Katrina’s Grace: Wind, Water and Wisdom takes us on Sandra’s journey of recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Join her from a pre-hurricane fall that left her helpless and found her at her daughter’s home waiting and wondering what was happening in Gulfport, to first sight of her destroyed home, car, and treasures. The journey continues through a lifetime of memories as lost treasures were unearthed, to the streams of volunteers who came to help her wade through the upheaval, build a temporary living space, and care for her neighbors and others in the community. As we read Sandra’s story, we remember our own grief and loss after Katrina or similar disaster experiences. This story speaks not only to the survivors, but to disaster responders who come to pick up the pieces yet don't hear the rest of the story of those with whom they shared an hour or a week, and finally they and all readers are able to feel the pain around the disasters where they served. Additionally, it provides insight for volunteers going into disaster work. A powerful yet sensitive story of dwelling in Grace and the incredible gifts of Grace from nature; from those who prayed, sent gifts, and came; and from living memories. Weaving reflections on lost treasures with journal excerpts, poetry, stories of those who came to help, sent needed materials and supplies, and also prayed, Sandra Price presents stories from a heart-breaking disaster. Katrina’s Grace invites us into the depth of Sandra’s soul and on into the depth of our own souls. As we read her story, we remember our own disasters and weep, laugh and ponder. And we can understand why Sandra said of Katrina, “I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

Katrina's Grace: Wind, Water and Wisdom, by Sandra Lynn Price

About the Author Sandra Lynn Price is an author, retreat leader, and spiritual director who helps people discover their inner wisdom and resilience so they can become more fully alive, more connected, and more whole. During Sandra’s initial career as Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Mississippi State University, she led the development of the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute as part of the National Writing Project. Sharing the work with those teachers was the highlight of her first career. At age 51 she retired to go on her deepening spiritual journey to seminary and beyond. After seminary she established and directed Silentia Center for Spiritual Formation for several years before she became a church pastor. All through those years of teaching and pastoring, Sandra felt a call to be a writer. She wrote volumes in her journals and amassed piles of manuscripts intended to become books, but published only a few poems. Finally in 2004 Sandra retired from pastoring to devote herself full time to her writing. She moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, to live in community with close friends and write. Today her work is writing and volunteering with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. In the latter, her primary role is coordinating Emotional and Spiritual Care curriculum development of two types of programs: resilience retreats for those who serve others and trainings for preparing responders to offer emotional and spiritual care. Sandra remembers sitting on her haunches ‘writing in the dirt' as a little girl. In high school she sat for hours in front of her upstairs window writing... writing... writing, sometimes on unlined sheets of paper, sometimes in a diary. Then in 1977 for Christmas she was given her first adult journal. By the time Katrina struck, Sandra had over a hundred journals filled with reflections, poems, and soul work. Since Katrina that writing has continued and grown into this book sharing all the Grace she experienced after Katrina. Sandra’s published poetry includes a thank-you poem to those who came to help after Katrina, Like Magi, You Have Come and Mama’s Rolls. Both are included in Katrina’s Grace. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Sandra now lives beside water near Jackson and Starkville, Mississippi, writing, enjoying life with her family and friends, and thriving on paying it forward through her continuing disaster relief work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. you will be better off than before you read it By traveler2 I am a generally a slow reader, but I zoomed through Katrina's Grace because I couldn't put it down. It reads as if it's about someone you know, a friend telling you, "Okay, here's what happened, here's what it means, and here are some applications for your own life." Of course, that's greatly oversimplified, but you understand. It's a real-life story of a real person who, as a writer, had the foresight to document the entire catastrophe. All of us have artifacts, memorabilia from important events in our lives. That old deviled egg dish of my Mom's doesn't mean anything to anyone else outside my family, but when it slipped out of my hands the other day and broke into a hundred pieces on the basement floor, my heart skipped a beat. Those are the "little things" that are actually the "big things" that get in our heads and hearts. Those are the bases for precious memories which Sandra describes so well in her book She also dips into the cold waters of reliance. How can it be that someone who has been so strong, so independent all of her life is now relying on the kindness of others? Sandra tells how Grace takes over in this area of her life. Although I don't think Sandra wrote this book as a survival guide, it focuses on the role of Grace in all of our lives -- describing its effects well enough that the definition is self-derived. Grace is, at least as I interpreted it, an undeniable force that is at all of our fingertips. We learn to accept it as the gift that it's meant to be, not just in the valleys of our lives, but every day. A contemporary American Literature instructor gave me a C once on a major paper because I failed to interpret the meaning as she did. You may glean something entirely different from Katrina's Grace, and that's certainly okay. But whatever it is that you take from this book, you will be better off than before you read it.

Hurricane Camille hit two weeks before I left for college. All disasters are horrific, but there's something so different about a hurricane. Tornadoes come and go in an instant, but hurricanes loom on your horizon, taunting you--will they come your way or will you get a miss this time? The aftermath is mind-boggling, as I'm sure you all know. It's not just losing your roof or a hundred-year old tree, it's losing your grandmother's Bible, your favorite pot for your famous pot roast, your irreplaceable high school annuals or your mother's pearls.Sandra Price simply tells you her story, and in doing so, she gives your permission to grieve all your losses. People say "it's just stuff"--but guess what? It's stuff that is the fabric of your own "life quilt" and by telling you the stories behind so many of her losses, you understand that it's not being childish or selfish mourning those "things" but you are grieving what's not there anymore. This August marks the 10 year anniversary of Katrina's wide path of destruction. If you know anyone who survived a tornado or a hurricane, this could be a valuable gift, because Sandra doesn't just stay focused on the losses, she tells the stories of all the people who came from so many places to help, and how things she needed suddenly appeared with no rhyme or reason. Hence the title--Katrina's Grace.

I'm looking forward to seeing her again to tell her to make an exception for this book -- that it is not at all depressing. Quite the contrary, it is uplifting. Sure, Katrina's presence is felt, but the emphasis in the book is on human kindness, love, friendship, and grace. I found myself with tears in my eyes many times while reading it, but they were not tears of horror at Katrina's destruction. They were tears of appreciation for life and love. I highly recommend this beautifully written book.
